We have removed ourselves so far from Darwin’s evolutionary equation, that we no longer nurture and tend to the Earth as we should and the consequences are clear. Ecologically conscious drawing which focuses upon nature and the environment is an emotionally captivating method of communicating these realities.

I was so grateful to be included as one of the 10 participants of M. Lohrum's '6 Feet' Drawing Performance during the finale of the Circumnavigation Drawing Symposium. 

I initially heard initially heard M speak of the concept and thinking behind this creation of work (winner of The Trinity Buoy Warf Drawing Prize 2022) during an online seminar in October. Reflecting on the notes I made, there was a clear focus on the process of drawing embedded within the artist's wider practice and the significance of wellbeing during the act of drawing.

Inspired by the realities which society faced during the covid-19 pandemic through restrictions, Lohrum conveys a sense of restriction and distance whilst maintaining a sense of togetherness. Our hands were tied and attached to a foot long stick which attached to the people both side to you - Tethered through these joins, we were instructed through the artist's singular clap ( hands, human touch, command...) to begin drawing. 

With a stick of graphite in each hand, a relaxed wrist and open mind, my hands began roaming the empty mass of white - instantly aware of the energetic scribbling echoing across the grand hall. Whilst not an obvious push/pull synergy dictating the outcome of the drawings, there were moments of compromise and change in direction of line due to the movement of the other hands navigating the opposite side of the paper. Beginning slowly and slightly cautiously, my mind eventually felt inclined to test and explore the boundaries of limitation. I attempted much bolder gestures which would influence those beside me, perhaps even try and reach across to the other drawings on the page. Following a fluid and organic rhythm of marks, my drawings evolved in layers of line which interwove (feeling of entanglement/significance of community). 

Despite the big audience and given I can experience social anxiety in similar situations, the 15 minute duration of the drawing felt meditative and impactful far beyond what my nerves has anticipated beforehand. I recall at the end, feeling disassociated for a moment as I had become immersed in the motions of movement and recording them through a continuous line approach. Each of the performers had their own methods of drawing and produced uniquely evolved compositions whilst appearing unified and fragments of a larger drawing. 

This experience has widened my outlook on performative drawing and enabled me to gain deeper insight into collaborative work as a participant. feeling inspired to explore this further after initial experiment during my peer workshop.

'Extinction Beckons' creates fictional places which feel distinctive of this world and engages the audience with an impactful approach to materiality and scale.
