Nonconformity is about being bold, about going against the grain and thinking for yourself. Kanye is one of the most bold people in the world right now and has no hesitation when it comes to speaking his mind and breaking past the standards. The image above shows multiple of Kanye's tweets across the day August 22nd. Some of these posts say things that sound straight out of a Transcendentalism writing such as "respect(ing) people for following the majority" is wrong and how we have lost individual thought and creativity (Twitter, West).

Based on Emerson's quote "to be great is to be understood" would define Kanye as a 'great' person (Prentice Hall 370). Minimalism is the purest form of modern transcendentalism, it truly embodies happiness and a simplified life. Minimalism is the act of getting rid of most material possessions in order to have a more simplified life that does not require "things" to be happy. Emerson shows how he was a minimalist by saying how "without any damage to (his) poverty" he was "a rich man", rich in happiness (Emerson 380). This represents minimalism because Emerson did not spend money on things he didn't need, thus saving his poverty, and this made him happy because he wasn't always searching for the next material object that was supposed to make him "happy".

A modern example of minimalism and simplified life would be the life of Joshua Becker, a man who lived his life in order to meet the 'American dream' but once he let go of 60% of his material possessions, him and his family became very happy and were able to enjoy life for what it was (Becker 8). This is being readopted in modern times with psychology research towards using gut feeling when making decisions. Malcolm Gladwell tells people in his book "Blink!" that "In the act of tearing something apart, we often lose its meaning" (Gladwell). These statements are backed by modern psychology which has proven that the majority of our brain's thinking is done subconsciously and that a lot of times we are better off trusting our gut feeling rather than overthinking the situation.

These modern adaptations of trusting intuition connect well with Thoreau's thoughts about transcendentalism. When Thoreau says "he left the woods for as good a reason as he went there" he had no reason to go there, he just did, it felt right to him and thus he went through with it (Thoreau 385). Because Thoreau didn't think too much about his decision and he just did it because it felt right, he was indeed very happy and satisfied with his decision.
