I remember quietly walking into the bright room, the aide adjusting Betty to face two chairs. As I walked around Betty in her wheelchair, I built up an image of her face in my mind. I imagined a small old lady, the typical white curly hair, possibly a pair of big round glasses, a small shaky smile. But I was wrong. Betty did in fact have white curly hair, and did not wear glasses. Her smile wasn’t shaky, it seemed to come easily. She smiled widely at us three girls, and it was impossible not to grin back.

I came into the little, quiet, white room where resident, Bill found his new home. The blinds were shut and a small shimmer of light crept in through the cracks. But it didn’t take the sun on a cloudy day to make the room glow. Bill was pleased to us, the interviewers, even though we came off shy. Bill was a stocky man sitting comfortably in his chair, designed like the cheap furniture at a Motel 8. His hair was slicked back and he wore pajama-like clothing. He was soft spoken but he had very dynamic and ambitions thoughts.

I could tell he was frustrated with himself. As he struggled and stumbled over his words, he would stop and look into our eyes with those sky blue eyes of his, searching frantically for understanding. Then, he would look towards Joyce, and she took over the speaking for a little while. During this time, the man would close his eyes and breath shallow, quick breaths, smiling as Joyce reminisced in the memories they shared together, the good and the bad.

Sally had a great childhood, with her days full of hide and seek, kick the can, and riding bikes. She described Montrose as the best place to grow up. It was a gorgeous town with beautiful tree lined streets, parks for children to play in, and the mountains close by with their emerald slopes towering over the tiny houses. It was an extremely small town, if you accidentally dropped the plates on the way to dinner, the whole town would know about it the next day.
