Professional “Take Away” from Reviewing Resources

The most powerful insight I gained from the resources is that burnout and compassion fatigue can silently creep in, even when you love the work you do. Recognizing early signs and being intentional about boundaries is essential for long-term sustainability in the helping profession.

One of the most impactful takeaways for me was learning that consistent self-care practices are in reducing burnout among school counselors. Despite valuing self-care, many counselors still struggle to practice it consistently, which increases their risk of burnout and emotional exhaustion.

Self-care is a non-negotiable. It allows school counselors to stay compassionate, grounded, and effective. Without it, we risk becoming detached from the very students we’re trying to support.

Self-care is not just helpful—it’s necessary. School counselors need this to continue being empathetic and effective. If we don’t prioritize our well-being, we risk losing the very compassion that drives us to help others.

Even though most counselors recognize the value of self-care, many don't actually engage in it at a high level, which puts them at greater risk for burnout. Regular practices like self-reflection and self-awareness are essential for maintaining emotional health and staying effective in our role as school counselors.

One self-care strategy I plan to use is creating an evening routine that includes unplugging from work, spending quiet time (relaxation app), and getting quality sleep.

Another strategy is setting boundaries by limiting work-related conversations or emails during personal time. These actions will help me stay present, both for myself and for my family.

These habits can keep me prevent the emotional weight of my work from building up.
