This week I was messing around in C major progression I explored, when I stumbled across a simple melody over a simple chord progression. Some notes are played in chords to create complexity and reflect the dual nature of the man's actions in my advertisement. This melody will most likely be played at the start of the advertisement: where the man begins doing good deeds. This melody is played in a major tonality with a simple melody to reflect the good and simple nature of the man. It isn't fully developed yet, and might change throughout the course of this process. In addition to the video below, I have also come up with 2 other ideas in audio form. I am not sure if I will use all of them in the final piece.

I used C major because it was the easiest to use from memory, and reflected the "simple" nature of the man in the advert. As I was playing the chords, I imagined several melodies in my head, and sang them out in my voice memos to play on an instrument next week.

This week I picked the first idea from last week (refer to previous column) for my final piece, because it reflected the simple and good nature of the main character. I started working on Part B, which was a minor reflection of Part A. This was to reflect how the man's initial actions did not immediately bear fruit, and instead resulted in some negative reactions. This part is written in C minor (for easy transition between C major) and transitions into its relative major, Eb later on. I started off by transposing the major chord progression from my first idea into the chords from its relative minor , and based my minor melody off the progression and my initial, major idea.

Today I received feedback from my peers. The primary concern was the overcomplicated ascending and descending ideas that I had. Ms.Waite and several others said that this overdid the simple and one-sided nature of the character my piece embodied. In response to this feedback, I decided to prune my current idea to its essentials, stripping away the passing notes. In my opinion, this new idea is better at embodying the message I want to convey. I am thinking of keeping my “complicated” idea for the Part A reprise. Below are the audio and scored versions of my updated ideas.

Today I worked on the transition between Part B and the Part A reprise, and the reprise itself. To transition between the two parts, I decided to just play a simple Eb major progression, to reflect the change of mood of Part B, which was in C minor.

I intended for the reprise to be a much happier version of Part A, to reflect the fruit-bearing of the main character, after he planted the seeds at the start of the advertisement. To fulfill, this, I extracted the melody from Part A, transposed to the current key: Eb major, and played it in a 3/4 waltz time signature and at a faster tempo. Towards the end when the character encounters the begging mother, I slowed down to emphasize the scene’s emotional impact: when the man realizes the true impact he made on people’s lives. I initially recorded this idea with MIDI into Logic to see if it fit with the visuals, then created an audio recording with the waltz chords and melodic idea playing at the same time.

Today I added a counter melody from the Tuba into the transition and reprise. This was to create a more musically interesting transition into a more positive part of the piece, and create a more positive mood. This addition was also used to represent the reward the character received through other’s joy. I felt the Tuba fit well with the waltz-like nature of the reprise.

Today I completed the ending of the piece. To do this, I included a moment of silence between the reprise and the ending for emotional impact and suspense. I slowed down the tempo a lot, and repeated Part A melody (coda), with the Tuba playing it and the piano accompanying with a chord progression, creating continuity between the start and end of the piece. The piece ended on the tonic of the key (cadence) it was in, to symbolize how the man’s seed planting paid off and returned “home” to the character when he saw the joy that he sparked.

Today I added a synth instrument in 2 parts of the piece. I used it in Part B to cover the low frequencies, playing the root of each chord an octave lower to build suspense. In addition, I added the synth into the ending, to create the sense of an even more gratifying reward. This was because the melody from the synth effectively harmonized and completed the main melody. To finish off the project, I edited the entire piece in the piano roll, ensuring everything was in time and that there were no dissonant notes, and published the score and final video. In summary, I believed the techniques and ideas that were developed through this process effectively conveyed the message and emotions in the advert.
