What is the function of a grade? We know that when students receive a grade and qualitative comments, they remember the former, take it very personally and often do not read or recall the latter. Grades reinforce the idea of tutors as incontestable authorities applying arbitrary assessments. So in the absence of the grade (huge opportunity) how might we promote the idea of tutors' judgements as contingent, and encourage students to develop their own sense of what makes 'good work'?

Some of the assignment's I'm currently completing for year 1 of my PhD are pass/fail only, and I'm finding myself feeling much more liberated as I approach these, able to take risks and use my own voice. So far I've 'passed' both and not been bothered about having a grade as the feedback helped me understand where and how I can improve for graded assignments. So from my own first hand experience I can see the benefits of pass/fail approach in practice for students in terms of producing work.

IN Stage 1, can we use feedback and pass/fail grading to encourage students to feel they belong and give them time to settle in? I agree with the comments that some minor requirements should not not be a single reason to fail. Particularly when our UAL digital systems have their occasional faults (e.g broken links).
