The tone of this poem includes disappointment and unsatisfied. Throughout the poem, Whitman believes that astronomy should not be represented in numbers and graphs. In the poem, he states, "How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick". This quote represents how he is disappointed and believes that something should be changed in astronomy.

The speaker repeats the phrase "when I" to show the reader the repetition of the lecture and how boring it is. He uses the word unaccountable, which I had to look up, and it means strange and weird. He said "How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick" which means that he was not only unable to pay attention, he also felt that everyone around him was mad and unable to see the world the way he does

The poet uses images of beauty in the stars and of nature and revolting images of science and understanding. "How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick" and "Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars" are used to contrast the boredom of knowledge against the wonder of nature.

The star is a major symbol used in the poem "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomy". Stars are a mystery in readings history with little understanding of them. In the poem, Whitman stated, "Looked up in perfect silence at the stars". This quote represented Whitman's love for the stars which also symbolized his love for the mysterious aura within the skies.
