There are four major sports in America: Basketball, American football, Baseball and ice hockey. In this poster I will talk about Basketball, American Football, the NCAA and baseball.

There are only four days in a year, where there is no American sport being player. America lives for sports, especially their own. The superbowl is being watched by 150 million people.

Basketball is a fast-paced game and is very dynamic. The game involves shooting, but your physical is also very important. The professional league is called the NBA, which stands for the National Basketball Association. There are 30 teams participating in the league. Basketball is a 5 on 5 team sport. There are five positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. The point is the playmaker. He distributes the ball and run the plays made by the coaching staff. Although a point guard primarily is a playmaker, they should be able to score the basketball. The world ‘shooting’ guard says it already. The shooting guard is mostly is very skilled scorer. The small forward is the most athletic player. They usually are around 2.06 meters long. But are very fast for this height. The power forward is longer than the small forward and is supposed to help the center with defending the basket. In offensive standpoint, the power forward is supposed to be able to shoot the basketball from long distance. The center is the longest player. He is supposed to grab rebounds and finish from close from the basket.

A professional football team consists of 53 people. Divided in two ‘camps’. The offense and the defence. They are basically two different teams and don’t really have something to do with each other, besides winning. They even have different coaching staff, only the head coach has say in both ‘teams’. 
 
American football is played 11 vs 11. The offense from one team against the defence from the other one. And vice versa. The offense consists of receivers, the offensive line, running back and the leader, the quarterback. The receivers are running designed routes to get open and catch the football from the quarterback. The running back gets the ball from the quarterback and runs until he gets tackled. The offensive line is protecting the quarterback and make lanes for the running back to run in. 
 
The defence consists of the cornerbacks, defensive line and line-backers. The cornerbacks are preventing the receivers from catching the ball.  The defensive line is attacking the offensive line, trying to get to the quarterback. The line-backers can choose, covering the receivers or adding pressure to the quarterback.

The system is very different from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, if you want to play a sport, you need to become a member of an amateur club. To get to the professional level, you need to stand out and get scouted by a professional club. In America, every sport is played in high school. If you stand out, you can be offered a scholarship by a college. This means they can attend college for free, and in return they will play for the sports team. The problem that exists today, is the fact that college sport is a billion-dollar industry. The students-athletes who preform for the school, don’t see nothing of this money. Of course, they get a free college degree, but life as a student-athlete is not that easy. They have to practice every day, follow classes and also need to work to pay for expenses. They need to remain a certain GPA in order to keep playing for the team.

The games consist of nine innings. Each team has the opportunity to attack and defend each inning. The game starts with the pitcher. The pitcher throws to ball to the catcher. As a batter (the attacking team) you have to try to hit the ball, and make sure the catcher doesn’t catch the ball. Is the batter hasn’t hit the ball four times, he has been ‘striked out’. The next batter has a chance now. After three strikes out, the teams switch. This happens each inning. 
 
If a batter hits the ball, he gets to run to 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, or the home plate. If the ball goes out the ball park, the batter has hit a home run. This means everybody on a base gets to run to the home plate and score a point. Including the batter. If the ball is caught by a defender, it will count as a ‘strike out’. 

Today’s baseball is in decline. Almost every game is being played in front of a small crowd. This is because of the time the games begin. A lot of games begin in the afternoon. Most people are still working then. Another reason is fact that a game will take up 3,5 hours minimum. Teams in the MLB play 162 regular season games. This is way more than other American sports. It doesn’t look like the MLB will change anything about this. Despite fans calling for change. The game has recently also had incident with former players, who used PDE’s. this hasn’t helped to sport in a positive way.
