1. Compared to other parts of Europe, viking women held much more authority. This is spectacular considering how easily early Europe can be associated with unequal rights and labor for women. Women not only usually centered control of the family household and farming, they ultimately were a center control of the wealth.
2. A gender role was not strict for Vikings and appeared to be diverse for women. They were sometimes represented as being obedient and self sacrificing young ladies, but often were shown forcefully married by control of parents. Yet still, they were also depicted as independent and pertaining free choice.
3. There was a surplus of rune stones granting true holy honor for women.
4.Holy practices also allowed women to be equal to male priests, able to teach the same sermons, as long as they abide by the holy book.
5. A large institution called Lagting was a sort of meeting of local men, and women and the disabled were allowed to attend. Women were often allowed to serve as representatives of the family if the man could not attend.

1) The keys women carried with them represented the wealth collected from the household and the farm, which shows how much power they possessed.
2) Viking women in sagas and stories were usually characterized as willful and unyielding, though in reality girls were married off by their parents to strangers for political and economic standing.
3) Women could choose other jobs, such as being a rune-master, which might explain why we have found and erected runes about and by women (although far fewer than we have uncovered about men).
4) There existed a law that banned prostitution and gave capital punishment to those breaking that law. Also, rape was given capital punishment by choice of exile or a stiff fine.
5) The genders of Viking corpses can be determined by what was left as burial gifts; the men were usually buried with weapons and tools, while the women were usually buried with brooches and keys.
