St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world. It is the burial site of St. Peter, a place of pilgrimage and a venue for audiences with the Pope. It is a huge, beautiful basilica that exemplifies the beauty and glory of God. As such, its form and function are a reflection of its great importance to the Catholic Church.

Although it is massive in scale, there is still proportion, rhythm, articulation, texture and color as well as light in its form. Since it is a basilica, it is cruciform, more specifically a Latin cross, in shape. Consequently, all of its hallways, flanked by a lot of pillars, lead to the gigantic and magnificent dome. Therein lies the elevated seat of St. Peter, supported symbolically by the Doctors of the Church and enlightened symbolically by the Holy Spirit. Inside the basilica are numerous chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary and various saints. All of the ornaments in its interior, from the sculptures to the gildings, are intricate and stunning. The paintings are breath-taking, ethereal works of art. There was a certain emphasis put on all these things as light shone above from certain angles. The gorgeous marble the church, square and pillars are made of makes one feel that he is in another plane of existence. I was fortunate enough to see this all personally. The suffering of waiting in long lines was worth seeing what was inside. Throughout the walk from the square to the basilica, I was mesmerized.

Aside from its grandeur, St. Peter’s Basilica also has a technical and symbolical function. Since it is the resting place of St. Peter, a site of pilgrimage and a location of audiences with the Pope, it has to be able to meet all three functions. As a result, the basilica and the square leading up to it are huge. It was built in such a way that it could accommodate tens and thousands of people while at the same time direct them to what was inside. No matter where you were seated inside, your attention would be drawn to the altar. Symbolically, it was the epitome of Christendom; it dominated the skyline of Rome, the center of the Christian world. It represents the unbroken line of succession of the popes, leading all the way to St. Peter and Christ himself. The basilica and square did serve its function as I, together with delegates for UNIV 2019, were able to go as close as we could to St. Peter's burial site, pay homage to the altar, stare in awe at the exterior and interior, attend mass with the Pope and his speeches.
