The US feared falling behind in terms of technological advancement. 
Another is superiority. Russia wanted to prove they were better than the US. They both competed to prove their technological superiority. 
The final way is fear. US citizens feared the Russian spacecraft flying far above their heads every day. They worried it could be some sort of spycraft/warcraft.
