Rudolf Schrödinger, Erwins father, was a botanist and painter. He came from a Bavarian family that had settled in Vienna after many years. He worked at the Austrian Ministry of Finance but wrote many papers about the study of algae.

Georgine Emilia Brenda Bauer, Erwins mom, was half Australian and half English. Her father was a chemistry professor and education was highly valued in their family.
