Rules Characters Must Follow:
Chapter 1: If you are a messenger, you are not allowed to stop running until your destination. “He did not look back. Stumbling up again, he crashed through the bushes, on and on, until he found a trail.”
Chapter 2: If you are a Native American you are not allowed to say someone’s name after their death because of their custom. “ None mentioned me by name after I was gone. It is our custom.”
Chapter 3: If you are a white woman, you are not allowed to show your skin or hair, even when you’re sleeping! “The women were not even allowed to show their hair, and wore close little caps on their heads indoors and out, even when they slept.”
Chapter 4: If your religion does not support the Native Americans, it would be considered “rude” if you owned something that belongs to them. “For all of the friendliness of this household, he was greatly afraid of what would happen if anyone were to find that his private treasure was an Indian tomahawk.”
Chapter 5: On Sundays, John has to go to the meetinghouse along with everyone else and worship all day. “Sundays, for John, were just as they had been at home: everyone went to the meetinghouse for worship, all day.”
