When the nurse and patient have differing beliefs... how is this handled?

Spiritual care demands nonjudgemental attitudes and an open manner of thinking that invites rather than excludes

If the nurse is aware of their biases, it will be easier to avoid abuses of spiritual care

The nurse should realize that being open to the spiritual realm and assessing the patients needs for spiritual intervention does not mean that you must be a chaplain or have extraordinary ability to deal with ALL spiritual or religious questions or requests. You can collab with a Chaplain, who is more prepared to deal with specific religious issues.

The nurse absolutely must follow the patients lead and be caring and respectful without inserting ones own beliefs into the convo.

The nurse should respect the patient’s decision, even if it means the patient will die.

Respect and help the patient to maintain their nutrition and diet practices within the religion they follow. Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and sometimes not fish or eggs. If the patient is hospitalized, help them find food that follow their practices.

Hindu women usually want only females treating them. Make other medical professional you are working with aware of this and maintain the patient’s dignity.
