5/28/2021 Interview with May Narisaranukul

May works at Anchor management and is the manager of all the projects undertaken by the company, sometimes several at a time. She has been working in that position for a year and a half and used to be an architect. She works on the field a lot to oversee the project and practically never works alone. She said that she can’t even count how many people she works and interacts with in a day because of all the team work and coordination that is required in her job. Her job consists in overseeing projects down to the smallest details like furniture and the final appearance of the projects so that the client is satisfied. For the FSS first floor project, May is in contact with Matt Rosen and Margaret but also with the teachers to know what each of them expects from these renovations.

Grant Johnson is an FSS Trustee with artistic and real estate experience. He has a daughter who goes to Friends Select and has helped the school in the renovation project notably by warning the school of the availability of the new building on Race Street and by helping the school throughout the project. He started off as an art major in his undergraduate studies but then reoriented into real estate. He taught at Upenn for several years in the 1990’s and then integrated Capital Access where he is Director of Development. He taught me about the different types of jobs there are within the field of architecture and what each of them were about. He also informed me about potential programs and internships that could be helpful.

5/29/2021 Interview with James Bradberry

James Bradberry is the director of the architecture company JAMES BRADBERRY ARCHITECTS undertaking the renovations at the first floor and in the newly acquired building on Race Street. He told me about a typical day in his life as an architect as part of a small firm and the type of projects he and his team accomplish. He talked about the way he has seen his profession evolve over time with the arrival of new technologies and the difference between working in a big specialized architecture company like he used to work in and the relatively small firm he currently works in. Jim also showed me powerpoints that depicted more precisely what being an architect entailed, from architecturally planning, building, and organizing big spaces, offices, and buildings to choosing the adequate furniture, flooring and coating in those new spaces.
