They pay tributes to Native Americans (=Indians).
Mardi Gras Indians are composed of 38 tribes.
The Big Chiefs start with a song, ceremonial dance, and challenge to "Humba". The Big Chief's demand that the other Chief pays respect. The song is impressive, here is some lyrics: "Me no Humba, YOU Humba!"
"Jazz" is their musical style.

People wear crazy costumes and they dress in purple, green, and gold. Everybody has pearl necklaces.
People bring a large bag with them so they can throw away all the necklaces!
Parade goers sit on the ground, throw balls, play music, eat great food and watch the crowds. On Mardi Gras day, shops are closed because of the celebration.
