My school is located in Shanghai. In this school, the Elementary has co-teacher, one Western Teacher and one Chinese Teacher. Math is usually taught in both languages. Literacy is usually taught in English, but teachers often draw from the students background knowledge. The school population is mostly student of Chinese background along with students who are ethical not Chinese, but grew up in China. There are also students from Korea, Europe, America, etc... From my perspective, I would say the school is very multicultural.

I have selected this RAFT choice to build a better understanding of what culturally responsive teaching means and what this looks like in a school and in the classroom. Exploring the various readings and podcasts has definitely given me a better understanding of what cultural responsiveness looks like and now provides me with the criteria and tools to self-assess my own classroom and teaching practices alongside my co-teachers and school leaders. Some areas I’d like to explore and evaluate (when we return to school) would be effective culturally responsive classrooms and teaching practices, role models for students, and ways to build closer partnerships with the ML parent community.

I selected Canva (canva.com) for my infographic. Canva is a great tool for almost any digital content. Canva can be used to support student engagement as it is a fun and creative way to present work. This can be especially useful for writing practice as it motivates MLs, who might not always be as encouraged to produce writing, to get excited about writing and share their ideas in a more fun and engaging way. It gives the opportunity for students to practice language skills, engage in creative writing and imagination skills. Fun writing opportunities could include posters, or even cartoon or comic strip productive tasks. An activity that always takes place at the start of the year is student introductions, and this is a great tool for students to create simple infographics about themselves. Sequence or process writing is something Canva is also useful for. Structure is already provided by many of the graphic templates and diagrams on Canva and this adds a layer of scaffolding as it helps students organise their work (almost like when using a graphic organiser) and focus on the content of writing when needed.

Ortega, C.

I teach at a MA-grade 12 school near Budapest. We have 945 students who represent 60 different countries. In our middle school (I teach grade 7), we have a dedicated EAL teacher who supports students in an EAL class as well as in content classes. As a Humanities teacher, we meet 2/week with this teacher as well as our Learning Support teacher to discuss student needs and plan lessons and assessments. Our EAL teacher also participates in co-teaching Humanities lessons, though only on occasion. As a school, we are working to move beyond the "food and fiestas" celebrations to provide students and families more opportunities to share their home cultures with our school community.

A little bit about my background: I work in an international school in Tokyo, Japan. For the most part, students who join the school speak fairly good English. Nonetheless, we do have EAL students as well. Especially for students who join upper elementary from a different school system (for example: a Japanese school, bilingual international school, etc.) if can be challenging for them to transition right away. Most parents speak English but there are some who do not. Translators are offered as an option for them at our school for Parent Teacher Conferences.
