Marcy Projects was a drug infested area that was brewing in Brooklyn, NY. In this type of violence riddled area it wasn't difficult for someone to get a gun off the streets. Shawn's father left him at the age of 11leaving Gloria Carter to work double shifts to provide for Jay Z and his siblings. Gloria saw potential in Jay Z as a rapper and funded his dreams by saving up to purchase his very first boombox which he would use to begin rapping. However, Jay Z ended up turning to the life of crime by selling crack and shooting guns to make a living. Sadly, Shawn shot his brother while under the influence because he had stolen his ring. Shawn attended George Westinghouse High School where people like Notorious B.I.G. originated from. Shawn then went on to prove those who said he would amount to a druggie or a corpse wrong by producing and releasing his first song with his mentor Jaz-O. This very song paved the path for Jay Z's rap career by giving him a platform on "YO!MTV RAPS" which validated his career. Kareem Burke and Damon Dash became Jay Z's first managers which founded ROC-A-FELLA  records. It was a subliminal shot at all the record labels who refused to sign Jay Z, that's when his debut Album "Reasonable Doubt" was acknowledged as a timeless classic.
