         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Asoka became king in 270 BC. He greatly increased the territory of the Mauryan Empire.<br>- Asoka was horrified by the violence of battle, so he converted to Buddhism and swore not to launch more campaigns of conquest. Asoka instead launched a highly successful campaign to improve the lives of his subjects.<br>- Asoka died in 233 BC, triggering the beginning of the Mauryan Empire's decline. In 184 BC, the last Mauryan king was killed.<br><br></div>]]></description>

Under his rule, the Gupta society reach a high point.<br>- During his rule, the economy gained strength and the people thrived.&nbsp;<br>- The people made beautiful works of art and literature that were admired by outsiders due to the empire's wealth and beauty.&nbsp;<br>- Gupta kings believed that the caste system from the Hindu culture would strengthen their own empire and continue to keep it stable.&nbsp;<br>- Until the late 400s the Gupta empire stayed strong, but then the Huns attacked them fiercely and deprived the empire of its wealth and power.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>3 A New Hindu Empire</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- The Gupta Dynasty gained power and united India around 320 AD. It was founded by their first emperor Chandra Gupta I, although he is no relation to Chandragupta Maurya. His conquests were filled with blood as he laid siege to neighboring lands.<br>- After&nbsp; Chandra passed the torch to his son Samudra Gupta. Under the new ruler, the old wars waged on, and Samudra had conquered the entire Ganges River Valley.<br>-With Gupta rule, India flourished.<br>-The rulers were Hindu, so India's&nbsp; main religion became Hinduism.<br>-Many Hindu temples were built.<br>-They revived the Hindu practices and writing.&nbsp;<br>-They also supported Buddhism and Jainism.<br>-They promoted Buddhist art and built Buddhist temples.</div>]]></description>

He created the Mauryan empire which went on to last 150 years.<br>-He ruled with help of a complex government with spies and 600,000 soldiers.<br>-They had many war elephants and chariots.<br>-Farmers paid large taxes for their protection.<br>-Chandragupta became a Jain monk in 301 BC and gave up his throne.<br>-His throne was taken by his son shortly after.</div>]]></description>
