What makes Murrow such a skilled speaker? How does he use language?

I believe Murrow is a skilled speaker due to his use of imagery in his speech. In his speech, he uses phrases like "a heavy package of despair", "picked up cheap in the marketplace", and "high like a distant thunderhead." This phrases, chock full of adjectives and references to everyday locations and objects, convey his own beliefs while relating to the listener. This allows the listener to understand the meaning behind his speech easily. Without his masterful use of imagery, I doubt he'd be such a riveting speaker.

What part of his speech stood out to you?

The 3rd and 4th paragraphs addressing the mental and physical fear present in London. It is easy to be afraid in times of war. The looming threat of an enemy army at your gates may be (subconciously) passed on to your neighbor. In preparation for a long siege, you and your neighbors compete to store as much food as possible, all while trying desperately to erase the thought of bombs dropping onto your city from your head. Murrow is correct - It has become more difficult than ever to distinguish black from white, good from evil, right from wrong. - because in times of war, everyone is fighting for their own survival.

Murrow uses a casual and friendly tone to express his own thoughts and opinions. His voice is rather deep and soft, but his words were very clearly spoken. He doesn’t speak too fast, but not too slow so that the speech becomes boring. He adds an accent to important words to be highlighted, such as ‘bitterness’ and ‘cynicism’. The words he used were complicated and educated, but he puts them into examples so that the listeners would understand his meanings. I liked the way he put strong accents into important words. It really helped me understand the key points of the speech, and he sounded like he was trying to convince me with his opinion.

Murrow uses the language directly and it is easy to understand. When he shares his personal beliefs, he speaks form the heart, that can resonate with people at that time. His speech is also well-organised. It with logical sense and ideas that can keep the audience engaged. He creates the pictures with his words, which has make a vivid imagery. He keeps repeating “I believe”, to express his core idea to the audience. I think paragraph 3 really stood out to me because it resonated me and captured the anxiety of that time, which reflect the fears of the nuclear war. He uses metaphor like “distant thunderhead” and “choking London fog” to create the powerful imagery.

Murrow is a very skilled speaker. What makes him such a skilled speaker?

I think Murrow is a skilled speaker as he used different tones when recording this broadcast. He used an easy, causal, and affable tone to talk about his points, which different audiences of different age groups and understand easily. His voice is deep, and rich voice, which the audiences will find rather convincing. The speed of his speech was not too fast, and not too slow with small paused intervals in between. He used his deep and rich tone to talk about his personal beliefs, which the audience can easily relate to and understand.

The part that stood out to me was the background when this broadcast was recorded. During that time, which was WWII, everyone was scared and afraid. I think through this broadcast, Murrow points out the fear of the people and echoed them by speaking out his beliefs profoundly. Therefore, this part of his speech stood out to me.

Murrow is a very skilled speaker because he is pretty confident in the talk show, he didn’t stutter or anything which makes it easy for the listeners to pay attention to. He uses a friendly and causal tone to speak like in paragraph 5 line 5, he said “and those thoughts we aren’t interested in”, here he used ‘we” to related to us, the viewer will feel like they are a part of his experience.

Murrow uses simple language, which makes it easy to understand. he gives example and evidence that people can related to that also connect with his ideas.

I think paragraph 3 stands out to me the most because he talks about how fear changes the way people act and this can make us not speaking up so murrow believes that being brave and talk openly can make the community better.

I think Murrow was a very skilled speaker because firstly, he spoke with a clear, serious and confident voice. This made the speech easy to follow and listen to. Secondly, he also pauses regularly, making the speech feel natural. Thirdly, he emphasises certain words, like “this” in “This I Believe”. In this example, it made the opening of his speech more attention-grabbing.

A memorable part of the speech was at the end, where Murrow took a more personal tone, and explained how learning about other people’s beliefs helped him. He understood how everyone has problems, which is why sharing solutions, in this case, our beliefs, is important. It was memorable for me, because I quite agree with his message. Most of the time, we can’t control the difficulties we face in life, so learning to cope with crucial.

I agree that Murrow is a very skilled speaker as he uses a variety of languages and tones in his speech. In his speech, he spoke very clearly with a confident tone and pauses. He used very descriptive phrases like "opinions can be picked up cheap in the marketplace while such commodities as courage and fortitude and faith are in alarmingly short supply" "a pill of wisdom, to be swallowed like an aspirin" and more, so the listener can understand his speech easily and also makes it more interesting for the listeners.

I think that the last paragraph stood out to me the most it is because I do believe in the message he said. He started using a third-person narration and a more personal tone to talk about his takeaway of his whole speech. His takeaway is that everybody has problems so it is good to take inspiration from how people solve theirs which I can definitely relate to.

I think Murrow is a very skilled speaker. The way he uses words is really interesting. For example, he describes fear as a “distant thunderhead”, which makes me think of a big, scary storm far away. And then he says it can be like a “wet choking London fog,” which makes me feel how fear can be right there, making it hard to breathe.

He also lists different fears, like physical, mental, and the fear of doubt. This shows that fear is not just in one form but many.

What really stood out to me was when he said this project was like invading privacy. He quotes General Lucius Clay, who said sharing your private philosophy is as embarrassing as getting undressed in public. That is an easy understanding comparison. It makes me see how tough it is for people to talk about their beliefs.

I think his use of simple but vivid descriptions and relatable comparisons that make us really understand. He also talks in a way that is reflective and sincere. I think that’s why he is a very skilled speaker.

I think that Murrow is a very skilled speaker. It is because he emphasised important words such as “I”, “opinions” or “rules”. Although he emphasised those important words, he pronounced every single word clearly and fluently so that people can understand the main points of his speech and what he’s talking about. He uses a large variety of vocabulary to sound more experienced. He also uses a lot of descriptions such as “images of witches in a neighbor’s yard and stampedes us to burn down his house” or “a pill of wisdom to be swallowed like an aspirin” to let listeners understand more about the complex topics.

The use of descriptions stood out the most to me. It helped me understand about what he was talking about more. For example: when he talked about physical and mental fear, it was hard to understand the difference and how it affects us. But when he talked about dogs and witches, I could immediately distinguish the difference and understand the topics fully.

Murrow is a very skilled speaker. Murrow uses simple vocabulary, which helps him to convey complicated ideas clearly, he also has a clear voice and a steady pace, maintaining the audience’s attention. Murrow avoids overly complex sentences and uses literally devices like imagery and metaphor, it ensures his ideas or messages are understood by the audience. One part of his speech that stood out to me was the fear in society. He talks about how people have replaced their beliefs with bitterness and doubt and described it as an ‘enveoping cloud’ and that it makes it hard to tell right from wrong. I think this somehow resonates with thr listeners at that time and it also encourages them to reflect and stay true to themselves.

Murrow has been a member of the debate team at his high school. He has a great interest in college politics, which made him to give a speech urging college students to become more interested in national and world affairs. Obviously, speaking is something that is very interesting and meaningful to him. That’s why he can speak confidently on stage. When you are confident, you can speak loudly and express more emotion and the pace and volume will change, which are also key elements of public speaking. This way, the attention of the audience will be attracted. He also always uses “we,” which is an effective word, as it encourages the audience to reflect on themselves.

His speech is descriptive. There are some sentences I loved: “Around us all, now high like a distant thunderhead, now close upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a London fog—there is an enveloping cloud of fear,” and “We don’t pretend to make this time a spiritual or psychological patent medicine chest where one can come and get a pill of wisdom to be swallowed like an aspirin, to banish the headaches of our time.” I found them so engaging and fun to read. They made the experience much more enjoyable, and I wanted to continue reading. The language is also argumentative. He was not just expressing his view but also persuading others. It’s compelling. Perhaps he used the key that people enjoy watching debate or argument. His takeaway is that everyone has problems, so it’s good to take inspiration from how people solve theirs. The audience will feel they have benefited after listening to his speech.

Of course, the thing that stood out to me is his belief. It is philosophical and valuable to think of. Some philosophical ideas I loved very much include: “It has become more difficult than ever to distinguish black from white, good from evil, right from wrong. What truths can a human being afford to furnish the cluttered, nervous room of his mind with when he has no real idea how long a lease he has on the future?” I would try to imagine the background at that time and why people had this kind of thought.

Murrow was a talented public speaker because of his clear delivery and organisation in his speech, with powerful use of language. He spoke in a steady, and confident tone, never rushing his words, which made it easy for people to follow his ideas and get inspired. His language was clear and simple, using direct sentences that felt natural and easy to digest. His thoughtful tone showed that he deeply cared about his message, making him sound sincere and trustworthy, which increased the audiences' engagement. Murrow also used pauses effectively, giving his audience time to process his words and making his points more powerful. He structured his speech well, starting with a strong opening to grab attention and ending with a memorable message. Another technique he used was putting descriptive descriptions to describe certain things like visioning fear as close as "upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a London fog", these sentences can allow the listeners to envision his speech better.

Murrow is a very skilled speaker. He was able to have a clear yet a casual tone, showing us the points he wanted to enlighten and impact us with. I particularly enjoyed how he adjusted his voice when he was reading out the more descriptive sentences, for example “now close upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a London fog, there is an enveloping cloud of fear.” He was able to change his speed and connected each word closely with another in this sentence that made it seemed it was suffocating and tight. I am also impressed by how he stressed on the vocabulary he wanted to specify and have the listeners pay more attention to it, for example “mental fear” and “doubt”.

I believe what makes Murrow such a skilled speaker lies in his expressive language and ample use of literary techniques, such as simile and metaphor in phrases "...high like a distant thunder head..." and "...now close upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a london fog...". these comparisons, usually used to link his beliefs with daily life items and experiences, add a sense of relatability and understanding in his work, fostering agreement in the audience. The way he slows down when mentioning key points and important ideas also help the flow of his speech, making it easier to comprehend and really shows you the key takeaways, leaving it memorable to the audience, and therefore contributing to him being such a skilled speaker. Murrow's language is expressive, conversational, and uses a variety of vocabulary, keeping the audience engaged and keeping a sense of comfort and relatability.

What stood out to me was the ending of his speech, where he mentions that his radio show isn't a magic pill that would kill all your problems, and is simply a something you can form your conclusions with in the chaotic time of war, he doesn't sugarcoat the situation, and I think this mutual understanding of the dire situation during war time is truly inspiring and an artifact showcasing the connection and understanding between human society.

Edward is a very skilled speaker, he's often very persuasive with his tone and uses a wide variety of terminology, making it easy to understand.

Firstly, he is precise and has good clarity, his language is very straightforward too. For instance, when he mentioned about the consequences in WW2, he doesn't use overly complex terminology. This allows a wider range of audience.

Secondly, Edward evokes a lot of emotion through his choice of words and explanation. When he mentioned about his own experiences related to the war, he described the fear faced by his friends and family. For example, he used imagery in his speech to present devastation during the war, making readers/ listeners feel empathy and connected.

thirdly, he often gives a lot of evidence to support his point and beliefs, which makes it more convincing and persuasive. For instance, he mentioned a time where he met a soldier, highlighting the soldiers trauma and mixed feelings. The personal story/ example bring human elements, making his speech more convincing.

A part that stood out to me:

Edward stated " fear can silence the truth but courage can set it free" this states the impact of fear on society, this strong quote encourages individuals to advocate for justice and stand up for themselves. He also used Hellen Keller as an example. " Keller faced her darkness and emerged with a vision that illuminated the path for many" this motivated me to find my own strength in challenging times.

overall, Edwards use of language, emotional storytelling and convincing examples can connect with me a lot which makes him a skilled speaker
