Quake catchers are apps that have been detected when an earthquake is about to, or currently happening. These send out signals to the others with the apps. Things like a myshake app detect and tell the times when an earthquake is about to happen. These detect waves.

This topic includes things like, Strain, ductility, elasticity, brittle, brittle fracture.

Strain is the distortion or bending. Ductility is how much strain something can take. Elasticity is ssssstrechiness! (<-get it?) Brittle is an easily fractured material. Finally Brittle fracture is a quick snap (see brittle definition).

There are 3 different main types of stress. Compression, tension, and shear. Compression stress is forces that squeeze or push rock together, and it's also where tectonic plates collide. Tension stress is a pulling force that causes rock to stretch or become thinner. It's in divergent plate boundaries where plates move away from each other. Shear stress is when it causes rocks to slip or slide past each other. It contributes to earthquakes and landslides.

Earthquakes cause a lot of damage to the land around them. They knockdown buildings, destroy land, and rearrange the land. A way to save yourself from great damage in the event of an earthquake is to get to a low point if you're in a building. Stay close to the wall with something like a sturdy table above. If you can get to open land like a field do! Get away from wall mounted objects, or things that may fall.
