The steam engine dates all the way back to the first century. Thomas Newcomen in 1711 was the first to improve the idea however James Watt took it to another level from its original use of pumping water from flooded mines.
By simply developing a separate condenser to regulate the heat from the engine enable it to be used for manufacturing, agriculture and the transport industry. The steam engine is arguably one of the most important inventions of all time, without it, today's modern word would be very different.
This is significant because James Watt was able to modified the steam engine improving it to power the Industrial Revolution.

Daler, E.

Puget Sound Navigation Co had a steam boat named "The Hyak'". In 1909 they ferried people from Seattle to Pearson (U.S.A). The type of people who caught the boat were typically wealthy as catching a boat during this period was a privilege. The purpose of the ticket was so the passengers had evidence that they had paid and were able to board the ferry. The ticket also told passengers which pier they were leaving from and where they were going to.
"The Hyak" was the fastest vessel on Puget Sound and was the favourite with the passengers hence Hyak meaning swift or fast.

Fandon, (2018, 3rd of febuary) the hyak, fandom (online). avalible from <https://curios-and-conundrums.fandom.com/wiki/Hyak_Steamboat_tickets>.

Henry Cort in 1784 patented the paddling furnace process which is a process of melting iron allowing it to be formed into standard shapes. The picture below shows the detail and beauty of the locomotive which has a wrought iron body easily constructed thanks to the puddling furnace process.
it was the first method that allowed wrought iron to be made on a large scale .The picture shows the general public the scale of and how powerful it had become transporting on railway lines that had also been constructed by wrought iron ready to be processed and used for manufacturing. With out these strong and powerful machines providing transport services the rapid advancement of the industrial revolution wouldn't of been possible. This is why this picture is so significant.

industrail revolution research, (unknown) steam engins, industrial revalution research (online). avalible from <https://www.industrialrevolutionresearch.com/industrial_revolution_steam_engine.php>.(11th March, 2019)

On the 21st of February, 1804 the first steam Locomotive was created in England by Richard Trevithich. It meant that businesses no longer had to be located near a water way. Railway lines could be built almost anywhere.
The steam locomotive uses a combustible engine with the materials such as wood, oil and coal being placed into the boiler producing steam in the which gives the power for the engine to work.
The steam engine lead the way for the diesel motor to be created which meant the fuel would last longer, was less labour intensive and would travel faster. Unfortunately pollution was a major factor which then lead to the development of trains being run on electricity which is where we are today
The steam locomotive is still being used to this day for tourism and educational purposes all over the world.

Eiran, (2014), timeline, time toast. avalible from <https://www.industrialrevolutionresearch.com/industrial_revolution_steam_engine.php> (11th March, 2019)

The invention of the steam engine became widely popular in 1787 John Fitch built the first steam boat which had twelve paddles. It was created in America. From 1765 to the 1830s steam boats had been improved greatly. The steam engine gave the boat the power to move up and down rivers without relying on wind or currents.
The steam engine branched out to the steam locomotive, because the railway was on land you could build them virtually anywhere compared to rivers being in specific places. To this day we still use the boat for transport just with a different motor - A combustion engine which is cheaper to run and is more reliable.

Ankur Poddar (unknown) the industrial revolution, weebly (online). avalible from <https://firstindustrialrevolution.weebly.com/transportation-revolution.html> (11th March, 2019)
