William Barak was a Woiworung/Wurundjeri man alive at the time of European colonisation in Victoria. His artworks are of historical significance as they document the ceremonial practices of his people from period using European materials. Barak was also an influential spokesman for Aboriginal land rights and the continuation of his peoples culture.

Sovereignty was an exhibition at ACCA in 2016/17 focusing on
contemporary art of First Nations peoples of South
East Australia. The exhibition was co-curated by Max Delany and Paula Bell and positioned historical works with contemporary practices to
"explore culturally and linguistically diverse narratives
of self-determination, identity, sovereignty and
resistance" (ACCA, 2016). This education kit is a valuable resource for thematically contextualising different Aboriginal Australians artworks and artists practices. The gallery also created a PDF of curriculum links with suggested learning activities.
http://content.acca.melbourne/uploads/2016/10/Sovereignty-CurriculumLinks.pdf
