I love this article. When I was in grade school, I remember running into teachers outside of school and thinking to myself, "wow they are like real people and have their own lives!" Back then, I knew so little about them as individuals. I don't want that to be the case in my class. I want my students to know about me, my favorite foods, what I do in my spare time and what makes me happy. I want to be human and approachable to my kids. I want them to want to share things with me too! I share stories often, and tell them about myself early in the year and try to remember unique things about them, so that I can ask them about it later. I keep photos around for them to see and I tell them when I have done something neat. I also started an Instagram account this year for my classroom, and have included a few images that relate to me personally. I want my students to be inspired by me and as Sturtevant says, "bring them into my world."

I try to find any reason throughout the year for the students to tell me more about themselves and for me to share more of my personal stories. Whether it's projects or free choice journal writing, etc. In the beginning of the year I wrote all the students a welcome letter to tell them more about myself and asked them to write me back. I got some incredible letters and I will continue to refer back to them as the year goes on.

At the beginning of the year i do a welcome back letter that tells them about me. I also did a guess me 10 question sheet where they had to guess about me, then i have them write to me so i can get to know them as well. I love reading them and if they made a team i cheer them on or go to a chours/band concert as well. I let them share stories because i want to know more about them then just their names

This was a great article. I always tell the kids funny things that happen with my family or silly things I do. I think it makes them feel like I am a real person. In turn lots of them will share their stories with me. I ask questions about shirts they are wearing or about their weekend plans. It is surprising how much they really like sharing. :)

I think this is the real reason I am a teacher. I had a real tough time growing up and made ALL of the wrong decisions along the way. It wasn't until I became a father and a teacher that I discovered something rewarding enough that I felt good enough. I always try to find and notice the kids that have a hard life. It takes one to know one. I try to subtly talk about difficult things that they are going through by relating them to the stories from my life (the PG versions). Mostly, I try to make them feel happy, silly, and smile because I feel it makes me feel good enough when I can make them forget about their problems or at least smile for even a few minutes. I think the most important thing we can do for any kid is to make them feel like and let them know that they are not alone on their path. Showing them that we a REAL and not perfect. Letting them know that even though I had some really hard times in my life, I made it through and I am where I am now, helps them to see the big picture.
