How did Cyclone Yasi form?

Cyclone Yasi occurred as a result of a number of weather conditions which occurred at the same time. There were warm waters, cumulo-nimbus clouds and thunderstorm activity. Cyclone Yasi was so big because it had travelled a long journey across warm seas which make a cyclone. To form a cyclone you need 2 main ingredients: you need the water to be warm, at least 27° and a cluster of thunderstorms. The storm gathers its energy from the warm water. The warm tropical ocean under a developing storm evaporates to form clouds, releasing heat throughout the process.

The economic, social and environmental impacts of Cyclone Yasi

Environmental: An environmental issue arising from Cyclone Yasi was that most of the banana plantations in the Queensland tropical region were destroyed. This affected 90% of the Australian market because Queensland is the 3rd biggest banana producer. Some damage also occurred in the Great Barrier Reef. Coral was broken and torn from the reef in areas that faced wind gusts of up to 285 km per hour.

Social: There are negative and positive social impacts to Cyclone Yasi. The positive aspects include that following Cyclone Yasi people are more prepared for such a disaster if it does happen again. People also gained new relationships as the community came together to help each other. Some of the negative aspects were that Cyclone Yasi destroyed electricity poles making electricity unavailable to many homes, therefore phones etc. could not be used to contact relatives or friends because phones could not be charged.

Economic: Some economic impacts of Cyclone Yasi are that the cleanup bill was over $10million USD. Also more money was needed for the repair and rebuilding of major cities such as Cairns and Townsville.

1. People decided to help each other: Whilst some people complained that people weren't helping enough, other people said that a strong sense of community was helping the reconstruction of their town.

2. The Commonwealth and State Governments: The Commonwealth gave the damaged communities up to $650,000 for reconstruction. The Queensland Government stepped in as well offering money for the reconstruction of their towns. The Prime Minister at the time, Julia Gillard, announced a "reconstruction inspectorate" while Premier, Anna Bligh, took on the mantle of Minister for Reconstruction.
