On his third tour in Iraq he was ambushed while his convoy was leaving an outpost. For the first few hours Chuck did not realize anything was wrong because of his adrenaline from the fire fight. Once on his way back to base headaches started, his ears were ringing, he felt dizzy, and his vision was messed up. He was later taken  on a black hawk helicopter to a combat hospital in Iraq.  About a week later he came back to the United States.

Chuck says his most serious symptom is the memory loss. This kind of injury means that there is likely some damage to his hippo campus which is the part of the brain responsible for storing memories.
