What makes a story a story... definitely complex. A story needs to have something extraordinary, as explained by Greg.

You need to have something out of the ordinary, whether it be fictional, or non-fictional. A climax would be recommended, as well as a resolution. An outline is needed, otherwise it would just a be dreary, and non-exciting. And something exciting is ALWAYS needed in a story. In order for a fictional story to be told, it must have evil and good, in any form.

A story needs a lot of things in order to make it a legitimate story. When stories were first told they were for entertainment, so one of the elements of a story has to be something you enjoy and want to do not something you make yourself read or listen to. As long as you enjoy the story it could be anything as small as "Baby shoes for sale. Never worn" to a three hundred page novel. One of the things I've always though was important was the character's attitude towards everything. If I could relate to the character a little more I tended to like the story more. A story needs to be something you remember.

A story does not need much to be classified as a story, however, Thomas and I agree that a story at least needs a conflict/problem, characters, and a plot to be thought of as a story, but that is about it. There is no specific format stories follow, there doesn't need to be a grand adventure, a story can simply have a lesson, and that is why it is a story.
