This strategy is useful during whole or small group discussions.

Each student is given the same amount of "talking chips" (tokens, slips of paper, poker chips). The teacher will present a discussion topic, and if breaking up into small groups, that is done now. Each person will participate in the discussion by putting a chip in the middle of the circle each time after they speak. This ensures that everyone is participating equally in the discussion.

After reading their assigned chapters in their chapter book, students would break out into literature circle groups. Each person would get 2 or 3 "talking chips" and take turns discussing the chapters they read. Each time after they add to the discussion, they would put a "talking chip" in the middle of the circle to show they have used a turn.
