Key Principles of Adab in Seeking Knowledge

Sincere Intentions (Niyyah): A seeker must have the right intention, learning for the sake of Allah and to benefit oneself and others, rather than for worldly gain or arguments.

Humility and Respect: Arrogance is the greatest impediment to knowledge; the seeker should be humble, even towards those who are younger, and show honor to their teachers and the knowledge itself.

Patience and Perseverance: The journey of seeking knowledge can be challenging, so patience and consistent effort are required to overcome difficulties and achieve understanding.

Active Engagement: Knowledge requires effort and action from the seeker. This includes active participation in classes, taking notes, and actively engaging with the material rather than passively receiving it.

Consistency (Istiqamah): Learning should be a daily practice and routine, with daily review and a consistent schedule to help build knowledge and faith.

Acting on Knowledge: True understanding comes from implementing what is learned. Knowledge without action is considered incomplete and potentially harmful.

Asking Questions: Seekers should overcome shyness or pride and ask questions to clarify their understanding, as ignorance is cured by questions.

Respect for Tools: Showing respect for books and notes is part of respecting knowledge itself, making it easier to attain understanding.

Lifelong Pursuit: The pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong endeavor, from the cradle to the grave, as there is always more to learn.

Sharing Knowledge: After acquiring knowledge, it is proper adab to share it with others, as selfishness with knowledge is not appropriate.

Topic: Hadith Jibril (Hadith of Gabriel) and its lessons.

Narrated by: `Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA).

To worship Allah as if you see Him.

If you cannot see Him, know that He sees you.

4. Signs of the Hour (Qiyamah):

- A slave-girl gives birth to her mistress.

- Barefoot, poor shepherds compete in building tall structures.

5. Purpose of the Hadith:

- It was Angel Jibril (AS) who came to teach Muslims about their religion.

Significance of the Hadith :

- Strengthens bond with Allah.

- Improves relationships with others.

- Purifies the soul and avoids major sins.

- Helps us become true servants of Allah.

Adab (Etiquette) of Seeking Knowledge :

- Be respectful to teachers (like Jibril sat respectfully before the Prophet ﷺ).

- Refer to scholars for religious matters.

- Do not be shy or afraid to ask questions.

-Admit when you don’t know — “Allah knows best.”

Focus: Three pillars of Iman — Belief in Allah, Malaikah (angels), and Kutub (revealed books).

Context: Based on Hadith Jibril, where the Prophet ﷺ explained Islam, Iman, Ihsan, and the signs of the Hour.

1. Belief in Allah

Central foundation of faith (Tawhid – Oneness of Allah).

Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and the only One worthy of worship.

Dalil: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:163, Surah Al-Ikhlas.

Application: Performing daily prayers, Quranic reflection, recognizing Allah in creation, and following His descriptions in Quran & Sunnah.

2. Belief in Malaikah (Angels)

Angels are beings created from light, carrying out Allah’s commands.

Roles: recording deeds, delivering revelation, praising Allah.

Dalil: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:30, Surah Al-Infitar 82:10–12.

Application: Awareness that angels observe us should encourage righteous behavior.

3. Belief in Kutub (Holy Books)

Affirming the divine scriptures revealed to prophets: Tawrat, Zabur, Injil, and Qur’an.

Qur’an is the final, preserved, and most comprehensive book.

Dalil: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:136, Surah Al-Imran 3:3, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:1–2.

Application: Study, understand, practice, and share the teachings of the Qur’an; integrate its values into daily life.

Uniqueness of Qur’an

Miraculous in language, eloquence, preservation, and prophecies.

Contains scientific truths not known at time of revelation.

Provides complete guidance in faith, law, morality, and spirituality.

Conclusion

Belief in Allah, Angels, and Holy Books is essential to Muslim faith.

Qur’an serves as the ultimate guidance, wisdom, and proof of Islam’s truth.

All prophets and messengers were sent to guide their nations with the same essential message: Islam (submission to Allah).

Belief in all prophets is necessary; denying one is equal to denying all.

Definition of Belief in Rasul :

1. Firm belief that Allah sent messengers to every nation to call them to Tawhid (worship Allah alone).

2. Prophets were truthful, trustworthy, and conveyed Allah’s message fully.

3. Belief in the authentic reports narrated from them.

4. Following the final Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ, who was sent to all mankind.

Message of the Prophets

All prophets taught Tawhid — worship Allah alone.

Obedience to the Prophet = obedience to Allah (Qur’an, Surah Al-Nisa’ 4:80).

Prophets are like paternal brothers — their laws may differ but their religion is one (Hadith).

Necessity of Prophets

1. Guide mankind from worshipping creation to worshipping the Creator.

2. Clarify the purpose of life (worship Allah, life as a test).

3. Show the path to Paradise and warn against Hell.

4. Establish proof against mankind so no one can claim ignorance on Judgement Day.

5. Reveal knowledge of the unseen (angels, afterlife, etc.).

6. Provide practical examples of righteous living.

Special Blessings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ :

- Sent to all mankind and jinn, not just one nation.

- Allah gave him victory by striking fear into enemies.

- Earth made a place of worship and purification.

- War booty made permissible.

- Granted al-Shafa‘ah al-Kubra (great intercession).

Application in Daily Life (Emulating the Prophets)

1. Gratitude: Always thank Allah and people.

2. Tolerance: Show mercy and ease, not harshness.

3. Repentance: Constantly seek forgiveness.

4. Simplicity: Live a simple, humble lifestyle.

5. Equality: No superiority except in piety.

6. Moderation: Avoid extremism.

7. Patience: Essential in trials.

8. Humility: Avoid arrogance.

9. Accountability: Self-reflection and correction.

10. Kindness: Do good regardless of others’ actions.

1. Shows Allah’s Perfection

- Highlights the greatness and uniqueness of Allah’s Names and Attributes.

2. Increases love for meeting Allah

- Believers long to see Allah, which will be their greatest joy in Paradise.

- A hadith and Qur’anic verse (10:26) explain how this vision is the ultimate reward.

3. Creates fear of Allah

- Belief in accountability strengthens awareness of Allah’s judgment.

- Supported by Qur’anic verse (Surah Ghafir: 16).

4. Motivates good deeds

- Encourages Muslims to act righteously, knowing they will meet Allah.

- Supported by verse (Al-Inshiqaq: 10:26)

1. *Encouragement to Do Good Deeds:*

- Believers are urged to strive hard in worship and do righteous actions.

- Qur’anic verses (Surah Inshiqaq 84:4 and Surah Insan 76:8) highlight the reward for sincere effort and charity, encouraging feeding the needy, orphans, and captives out of love for Allah.

2. *Patience in Hardship:*

- Belief in Allah and the Hereafter helps people stay hopeful and patient during tough times.

- This faith strengthens the ability to face trials with determination, hope, and positivity.

Manner with Allah :

1. Sincerity (Ikhlas) – Do every act of worship only for Allah, not for showing off.

2. Humility – Acknowledge that we are weak servants who depend fully on Allah.

3. Gratitude (Shukr) – Always thank Allah for every blessing (health, wealth, knowledge, success).

4. Patience (Sabr) – Accept trials and hardships with faith that Allah has wisdom behind them.

5. Guarding obligatory and voluntary worship – Perform the five pillars and add extra acts of worship to show love for Allah.

6. Supplication (Dua) with humility – Ask Allah with hope and sincerity, never with arrogance.

7. Avoiding sins – Respecting Allah means staying away from His prohibitions.

8. Glorifying Allah’s Name – Never use His Name carelessly, and honor the Qur’an.

9. Acceptance of Qada’ and Qadar – Be content with Allah’s decree without questioning His justice.

10. Love and fear of Allah – Put Allah above all else, seeking His pleasure.

Manner with community :

1. Respect others – Treat people with dignity regardless of their status, race, or background.

2. Kindness and compassion – Help those in need, care for the weak, and support the poor.

3. Justice and fairness – Be honest and fair in dealings, without cheating or oppressing anyone.

4. Good speech – Speak politely, avoid insults, gossip, and harsh words.

5. Cooperation – Work together for good causes, and avoid things that harm society.

6. Forgiveness and patience – Tolerate mistakes, forgive others, and control anger.

7. Spreading peace (Salam) – Promote harmony, unity, and avoid conflicts.

8. Respecting neighbors – Care for neighbors, not disturbing them, and offering help when needed.

9. Keeping promises – Be trustworthy and fulfill commitments.

10. Maintaining cleanliness and public property – Keep the environment clean and respect shared facilities.

Manner with parents :

1. Respect and honor them – Always treat them with dignity, never raising your voice or speaking harshly.

2. Obedience (in what is good) – Follow their advice and instructions as long as it does not go against Allah’s commands.

3. Kind speech – Speak softly and politely, avoiding words that may hurt them.

4. Gratitude – Acknowledge their sacrifices, efforts, and the care they gave since childhood.

5. Service and care – Take care of their needs, especially when they are old or weak.

6. Praying for them – Make dua for their health, forgiveness, and mercy, e.g., “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small” (Qur’an 17:24).

7. Patience – Be patient with them, even if they repeat themselves or become difficult due to age.

8. Financial support – Help them with money or resources if they need it.

9. Do not disobey or hurt them – Avoid actions or words that may cause them sadness or disappointment.

10. Show love and affection – Express love through actions, words, and care.

Manner as a student :

1. Respect teachers – Listen attentively, greet them, and follow their guidance.

2. Discipline – Be punctual, prepared, and consistent in studies.

3. Sincerity (Ikhlas) – Study with the intention of gaining knowledge for Allah and to benefit others, not just for grades.

4. Focus and attention – Pay full attention during lessons and avoid distractions.

5. Asking questions politely – Seek clarification with respect, not to challenge or show off.

6. Honesty – Avoid cheating, plagiarism, or dishonesty in exams and assignments.

7. Respect classmates – Cooperate, share knowledge, and avoid bullying or mocking others.

8. Care for school property – Keep books, classrooms, and facilities clean and well-maintained.

9. Time management – Balance between study, rest, and other responsibilities.

10. Gratitude – Appreciate the opportunity to learn and respect the effort of parents/teachers who provide it.

The Pillars of Islam are five:

The declaration of faith (Shahadah), prayer (Salah), giving charity (Zakat), fasting in Ramadan (Sawm), and pilgrimage (Hajj). These are the physical acts that build a Muslim's life. They train our body and soul to stay connected to Allah and benefit others.

The Pillars of Iman are six:

Belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and Qadar (divine decree). These are the beliefs that live in our hearts. They remind us who we are, where we came from, and where we’re going.

Having adab (manners) with the Qur’an means showing respect when reading it which being in a clean state, reading with reflection, and trying to follow its guidance. The Qur’an is not just a book to be read but it’s a message from our Creator that shapes our lives.

When it comes to seeking knowledge, adab is just as important. A sincere student should be humble, respectful to their teachers, and always act upon what they learn. True knowledge should make us more humble, not proud.

Qur’an Reference:

"Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding."

— Surah Az-Zumar (39:9)

This ayah reminds us that knowledge, when paired with good manners and faith, brings light and understanding into our lives.

Acts of worship (ʿibādah) are performed with wisdom (ḥikmah) and clear purpose.

Ṣalāh helps prevent immoral behaviour and strengthens remembrance of Allah.

Ṣawm teaches self-discipline, patience, and empathy towards others.

Zakāh purifies wealth and encourages generosity and social responsibility.

Ḥajj promotes humility, equality, and obedience to Allah.

Worship shapes good character and moral values in a Muslim’s life.

Understanding the wisdom behind ʿibādah increases sincerity in worship.

Overall, ʿibādah benefits both individuals and society spiritually and morally.

The topic helps me understand that every act of worship has deep wisdom and purpose.

Ṣalāh trains discipline, focus, and strengthens the relationship with Allah.

Proper preparation for ṣalāh encourages cleanliness, order, and responsibility in daily life.

Khusyūʿ reminds me to be mindful, sincere, and fully present when worshipping Allah.

Ṣawm teaches patience, self-control, and empathy towards others who are less fortunate.

Zakāh develops generosity and helps purify both wealth and the heart.

Ḥajj instils humility, unity, and equality among Muslims regardless of background.

Understanding the wisdom behind ʿibādah increases motivation to practise it sincerely.

Khushūʿ reminds us that Ṣalāh is not just movements, but from the heart.

It trains us to be disciplined and obedient to Allah.

Fasting is not only avoiding food and drink, but also bad behaviour.

Hunger and thirst make us understand the suffering of others.

Fasting builds empathy and mercy in

our hearts.

Zakah reminds us that wealth belongs to Allah.

It teaches us to trust Allah (tawakkul), not our money.

Giving zakah cleans and purifies our wealth.

Zakah helps us care for the poor and needy.

It builds brotherhood (ukhuwah) among Muslims.

Sharing wealth reduces selfishness and greed.
