Princess Diana and her boyfriend, director Dodi Al-Fayed, were privately having dinner in Paris at the Ritz Hotel. At 11:30 PM, they left the hotel due to being harassed by paparazzi, and entered a limousine with Diana's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, and French driver Henri Paul. The four went on a high-speed trip through the narrow streets of Paris at an estimated speed of 60 miles per hour. At 12:19 AM, the vehicle crashed into the 13th pillar of the Pont d'Alma Bridge. Both Al-fayed and Paul died at the scene of the crash, however Diana and Rees-Jones were rushed to the La Pitie Salpertriere Hospital. Rees-Jones survived with major injuries. At 4 AM, Princess Diana died as a result of injuries caused in the accident, mainly from a severed pulmonary vein. She was 36.

It was rumored that the car Diana had been riding in, the Mercedes S-280, had been rebuilt from a previous crash earlier that month. It was said to be dangerous over the speed of 37 mph. With circling theories about the car and Mercedes vehicles in general, the company was worried about sales dropping and not being able to come back. Conspiracy and bad feelings revolving around the car are still circulating and are hard to sell, even 21 years later. Famous pictures of the destroyed car show the destruction of the crash and the true degree of the accident, making the situation even more devastating.

Princess Diana was born on July 1, 1961 as Diana Spencer. She grew up in England with a distinct interest in music, fashion, and an immense love for children. Before marrying the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, she worked as a nanny and kindergarten teacher. She inherited the name Diana, Princess of Wales. She later had 2 sons, Prince William and Harry. Unfortunately, her marriage with Prince Charles didn't last as they both committed infidelities and later divorced. This lead to Diana's struggle with depression and bulimia. However, after the divorce she continued working closely with the royal family and kept up with her duties as a princess. Diana devoted herself to charitable efforts and her two sons.

It is unclear if the passengers in the car were wearing seat belts, but the tragedy could have possibly been avoided if they were. Computer simulations and multiple tests were set up after the princess' death, all trying to find the answer to whether a seat belt could have made a difference. Renfroe Engineering in Arkansas speculates that if seat belts had been involved, as horrific as the crash, it could have been survivable. Their computers showed that without seat belts, the seat in which Diana sat, their head and chest would have hit the back of the front seat with force. Diana suffered multiple injuries to her chest, the torn pulmonary artery eventually leading to her death.

Diana worked on many different charity cases, her most famous being her involvement with HIV/AIDS. This was a little bit of a rebellious act considering that the disease at the time was shamed and cast aside by society. Homophobia and HIV/AIDS was a very present problem in which Diana was able to help work to eliminate. The image below is one of the most famous pictures of her, shaking an ungloved hand with an HIV/AIDS patient, breaking the belief that the disease can be transferred through touch. She had a significant impact on the issue, changing people's opinions and attitude toward the topic. She's quoted saying: "HIV does not make people dangerous to know. You can shake their hands and give them hug heaven knows they need it."

With her involvement in the HIV/AIDS field, and many others, Princess Diana didn't follow the traditional protocol of the Royal Family. This is what attracted people to her. She was compassionate, sympathetic, nurturing, and personable. Diana was able to change the norm of the ideal princess. What is now expected is everything she was. She was able to change the standards of the royal family and break through the typical stereotypes. Rather than sitting back and smiling, she got involved and made a difference. This is the legacy she left the crown after she died.

In July of 2017, Prince Harry revealed that his mother left behind letters that she had written the day of her death. They were written to people of authority explaining what needed to be done to make a global landmine ban possible. She had recently visited children's whose legs had been blown off after stepping on bombs in Bosnia. Three months later, after her death, an international treaty was signed, banning the use of the landmines. Prince Harry reminisced about his mother, looking back on the huge impact she had on the world. He stated in article in the past year:
