In order to obtain a CNA license, you must have a highschool diploma or a GED. A high school education is the minimum requirement. You also have to complete a CNA training program that is state-approved. Upon completing the training program, you must pass the competency exam. Also you do have to complete a background check in order to be cleared to work. In order to keep up with your license, in NYS, you must work two consecutive days before the expiration of your certification. Maintaining your certification can vary by state. You may have to prove you worked a specific number of hours as a CNA in the two years preceding your renewal date. Being a CNA can be a great way to get experience in the healthcare system without having to obtain a college degree.

Upon completion of a state-approved CNA training program, you will receive a certification/license. This certification will be verified by an employer in whichever healthcare setting chosen to work in. Nursing homes, Medicare, and Medicaid facilities can only use CNAs listed on their state registries. The certification exam incudes multiple choice as well as an evaluation for skills. Earning certification or licensure demonstrates that you’ve proven you have the level of knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients in this role. After being certified, you can go on to receive a speciality certification but meet the requirements of the organization that you are being certified under.

Roles and responsibilities can vary for CNAs depending on the workspace. Whether you work in a home or an actual healthcare facility. Some of the roles and responsibilities of a CNA include: bathing patients, feeding patients, checking blood pressure, etc. CNAs help patients with their activities of daily living. The biggest part in being a CNA is providing companionship to your patient/residents. Some cases these patients/residents don't have family or any friends so as a CNA, they are the closest thing to a family member. Also as a CNA it is important to have certain skills to be able to perform care to the best of your ability. These skills include but are not limited to: dependable, physically fit, observant, proactive, compassionate, etc. Also as a CNA you have to be mindful of your own body mechanics and protect yourself as much as your patient/resident.
