I was raised by a model minority to be a minority, to achieve that status, certain impulses had to be suppressed. Years later, I understand both the reason and its consequences."

In chapter 1, Norris talks about the impact her father had on her life, and how he had an ever positive attitude despite the racism in the era. She then talks about how her father got cancer and how devastating the diagnosis was. She also tells a story about two white ladies who were being extremely rude to them in the airport. She showed that even when her father was sick he didn't reprimand the women who were cruelly laughing at him.
