Summary: 
Sylvia Mendez and her family fought for the ending of segregated schools in California. They were Mexican American citizens who spoke fluent English. Mendez’s parents tried enrolling her into an all white school that was close to their home. Members of the school board refused to allow her to attend the school, and recommend that she attend a school out of the way. The school they recommended did not have suitable conditions for students. Her family sought legal action. This all took place before the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. The lawsuit her family organized with the Hispanic community brought an end to segregation in schools in their state.
