The character Jim, who was a slave before he ran away, faced racism on a daily basis. Another major theme of this novel is Childhood. As we continue reading, the reader watches Huck go through the stages of his childhood and learn how to live on his own. The last major theme of this novel would be education because although Jim and Huck are not properly educated, or at least don't want to be, they are still able to survive like everyone else. Racism is a major theme because this book was set before the Civil War. This means that slavery is still present and you can see how Jim is treated differently than the others. One example of this is when Jim is called by the N word by people who don't know him.

Friendship is a major theme because as the story goes on the bond between Huck and Jim grows stronger and stronger.
