My mom went in to work despite it being her usual day off. My family got the alert and rather than fear, we simply felt confusion and made no move to do anything. No “I Love You” texts, no running outside, and no boarding up the house. None of us believed it was real so we just continued watching the football game. I remember my brother making a joke that he should’ve left when he had originally planned to because he was supposed to leave a few days before but he stayed longer. My dad didn’t believe it was real because we only got the messages on our phones and the radio was on and it wasn’t saying anything about it, so we still went to the soccer game, but obviously it was cancelled. I immediately doubted that it would actually hit Oahu. I knew a bit about North Korea and the US military capabilities and knew that if there was an ICBM from North Korea, their tech was too inaccurate to strike Hawaii and that the US navy had the capability of intercepting the missile. I texted my friends that they had little to worry about.
