Characteristics of Estonian Education

The Estonian model reminds us that sustainable educational progress is rooted in a strong mindset around lifelong learning, accountability, and inclusive practices. Many schools are already embedding reflective teaching and inclusive approaches, but like Estonia, continued growth depends on cultivating a culture where professional learning, digital innovation, and shared leadership become part of everyday practice. Viewing learning as a continuous journey, not just an outcome, can lead to deeper, more meaningful impact across educational communities.

Transforming Education

Transforming education through data and AI requires more than technology alone. It calls for contextual intelligence, inclusive support systems, and above all, human judgment. While AI can enhance curriculum relevance and personalize learning, its true value is realized when combined with collaborative decision making and shared professional insights. Meaningful change happens when educators come together to interpret data, apply it thoughtfully, and ensure that every learner is supported through both innovation and human connection.

A Turnitin representative shared that 64 percent of students are more concerned about AI in education than educators. This highlights the need for transparent, collaborative conversations that include student voices to ensure AI supports learning in a fair and trusted way. Following the session, I spoke with the Turnitin representative about the need to rethink teaching and learning at the university level. Just because AI can detect plagiarism doesn’t mean students fully understand or do not understood their assignments. Incorporating reflective components like Q and A after submission could deepen understanding. Regardless of age, the learner should remain at the heart of every educational institution, not just in schools, but in universities too. 🙂

Among the many exhibitors, one that stood out was StuDIYo Lab, which encouraged hands-on learning through woodworking and design activities. While this isn’t about purchasing anything, it was refreshing to see an approach that moves students away from screens and engages them in real-world, creative problem-solving—promoting cognitive growth, confidence, and collaboration.

This session explored learning through digital tools and virtual reality, sparking a lively Q and A. The discussion raised important questions about how these approaches differ from traditional resources and whether they truly represent innovation. While some argued it reflects what educators have been doing for years, others emphasized the need to upskill and adapt to a changing world. Most agreed that a balanced approach is key, leveraging new technologies while staying rooted in sound pedagogical practices.

Panel Discussion 1 sparked meaningful conversations around STEAM education, highlighting the importance of critical thinking and problem solving. While there was consensus on the value of these skills, the panel also acknowledged that every school operates within its own unique system, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. A key takeaway was the need to thoughtfully assess what truly benefits students- ensuring educational strategies are purposeful, relevant, and responsive to their specific contexts.

Panel Discussion: Bridging the Gap Between STEM Education and Industry

This discussion shifted the focus from tools to character, emphasizing that raising principled, ethical students is more important than academic success alone. The panel stressed that no matter how advanced technology becomes, it is the integrity and values of our learners that will shape the future. This echoed our Grade 5 session on the ethical use of AI. Moving forward, we need a shared vision where character development is a collective priority through consistent expectations, clear consequences, staff modeling, and strong parent partnerships. Accountability must be a community effort if we want to raise not just capable learners, but good humans.
