" Mom told us we would have to go shoplifting. "Isn't that a sin? I asked Mom. "Not exactly", Mom said. "God doesn't mind you bending the rules a little if you have a good reason. It's sort of like justifiable homicide. This is justifiable pilfering." "
- page 111

This a theme of non-conformity because the mother is a rebel against society due to stealing clothes at the store.

This photo represents when
Rose Mary prefers to steal new clothes for Maureen at the clothing store. Even though Rose-Mary is capable to work as a teacher and make money,
but since all she cares about is her artwork, there is no time to work. Instead she is shoplifting for new clothing with the help of the children distracting the employees Rose Mary is able to slip the clothes in her raincoat.

" I told Mom she was the snootiest squatter I'd ever met, and that made her laugh. "
-page 269

The statement that Jeanette told her mother represents the theme of chaos and order. Rosemary's living situation was chaotic. They some how found a place to sleep if not they sleep in the car. Rose Mary always brought along her paints and news papers.

The image represents the art studio that her mother would create in every place she would move in to. This is a type of building her parents would live in when they were in New York.

"...If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim. " - page 66

This is an experience that relates to the theme because it taught her how to be independent.

I chose this image because it represents when Rex was teaching Jeannette how to swim. She drowned the first time and Rex had to save her. The second time, she propelled her self away from her father because she didn't want him to shove her back into the water. She learned how to swim out of fear so she wouldn't drown.

"..we found a shovel and a pickaxe at an abandoned farm and spent just about every free minute digging a hole. We knew we had to dig it big and deep. 'no point in building a good house unless you put down the right foundation', dad always said."
-page 155

This is an example in the book for Fantasy vs Reality because the Glass Castle was an idea that the father wanted to come true but wasn't capable of it due to the obstacles in his life.

I chose this image to represent this quote because their fantasy was to build the glass castle. They planned and made blueprints of the glass castle ,but in reality they did not have enough money. This was Rex's dream however he is an alcoholic, so it was difficult to save money. They would spend their money on other unnecessary items.

"...she reached into the pile of kitchen utensils that Dad had thrown there, grabbed a butcher knife, and slashed it through the air in front of him. Dad leaned back. 'a knife fight eh?' he grinned. 'okay, if that's what you want'. He picked up a knife, too, tossing it from hand to hand."

"Mom at first said no, she didn't, but Dad kept asking her again and again, and when she finally said yes, the fight disappeared from both of them. Vanished as if it never existed. Dad started laughing and hugging mom, who was laughing and hugging him".
-page 122

This a theme of unconditional love because the parents would argue with each other aggressively. But they would find a way to forgive each other.

This picture represents on how Rex and Rose Mary have an unconditional love. It shows their love because no matter how much they argue or hurt each other. They always forgive each other about their disagreements and end up being happy together.

"you have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that."
-page 144

This an example of forgiveness because she learned to let go even if people would mentally abuse her.

This image represents when Jeanette's mother gave her advice to forgive others even if they are bad people.
