The themes of love and loss are very prevalent in this song. The narrator is trying to figure out what went wrong with a failed relationship. He is left by a woman I assume he had a romantic relationship with. He doesn't understand because he feels a passion between the two, however, he is left alone. He asks "maybe I am just like my father-too bold." There are so many different deep meanings that can be found in his music beyond "When Doves Cry".
