Spartans did not trust trade, and would take what they needed from other city-states. They also relied on farming and conquests of others. Only men could be citizens, so  boys went to school, and girls stayed home to lean how to take care of a household. In Sparta, the purpose of school was to produce men and women  that were ready to fight. From the age of seven, all Spartan children trained for battle. Most could not even choose their own husbands. Athenian slaves were owned by most people that were not poor. Slaves taught Athenian children and ran households. Spartan women lived the same simple life as men.Just like the men, they needed to b strong and healthy, and ready to fight when needed. Slaves, called helots, despite harsh treatment, did have some rights. They could marry whomever they wanted, could carry their names to their children. They also could buy their freedom.
