It should be left up to these people to actually put in the work and repent for sins/just don't sin. Knowing that you did what you were supposed to do or at least try your best is better than living on lies. The church was manipulating scared people who screwed up think that they has a chance to erase their sins by paying a small few. I think it’s saying that money can possibly make you lose yourself completely and turn your heart towards evil desires for materialistic things and cause you to sin but you should remember that you might need God’s help at some point and he knows if your heart is corrupted or not, therefore he can choose to help you or not depending on your good and bad deeds.
