He had recently converted to Islam, and his religious beliefs prevented him from fighting. So, Ali refused to fight, consequently, he was stripped of his titles, banned from boxing for three years, fined ten thousand dollars and sentenced to jail for five years in 1967. Although Muhammad never backed down he spoke for all those who felt American military action were erroneous.
