In 1962, Muhammad was the heavy weight champion and was inducted into the Vietnam war. He had recently converted to Islam, and his religious beliefs prevented him from fighting. So, Ali refused to fight, consequently, he was stripped of his titles, banned from boxing for three years, fined ten thousand dollars and sentenced to jail for five years in 1967. Although Muhammad never backed down he spoke for all those who felt American military action were erroneous. He managed to stay free while appealing his conviction. During this time the media patronised Muhammad for his recently changed name from 'Cassius Clay' refereed to as his slave name to Muhammad Ali.
