From this we see how important it is for student to believe in their way of life in order to be able to connect with someone who is supposed to know it all. A lot of times, we see marginalized groups alienated in the classroom - even though it may not be malicious - in a way that some cultures are supposed to forget all of their ancestor's accomplishments. In this clip, a known scene in the 1988 movie, "Stand and Deliver", we see that the teacher is using culturally relevant pedagogy in order to make the students feel like this lesson in math connects to them on a much more intimate level.

Continuing from the first quote, this shows that there needs to be a level of mutual respect from both sides in order for students to feel safe and vulnerable. When there is gap, miscommunication and distrust can settle in. In this video from the film, "Freedom Writers", we see Mrs. Gruwell try to get through to her students, as she is trying to understand this world that they live in. This relates to the quote because you can see the student's lack of respect for her title stems from distrust.

There is a quote that I've heard that goes "Don't be sorry; be better". This kind of reminds me of what Emdin is trying to explain here. It is one thing to understand that there are stark differences between you and your students, and you may acknowledge it without any intent to learn about the other side; but it is another to not do anything to mend the situation or try to connect with them. In another clip from the movie "Freedom Writers," Mrs. Gruwell has her students play the line game in order to understand what they deal with on a daily basis. This was after figuring out that these kids have a much more different lifestyle than what she could grasp.

Teachers that are confident and have that level of trust with their students will not feel threatened if the students try to take reign every once in a while. It is a way of allowing the students to teach each other, as well as themselves. It takes a teacher who values what their students can bring to the table. In this third clip from the movie, "Freedom Writers", Mrs. Gruwell introduces the new semester with new books. Not only that but the students feel safe in the classroom because they've made this connection with this teacher who listened to what they had to say.

For children, stability is a huge key factor in their development. Without this, it is not uncommon to see struggling youth who try to make sense of a chaotic situation. That is why it is vital that the classroom becomes a place where children feel safe and stable. A place where they can feel at home. In this last clip from "Freedom Writers," we see that the students are upset because of the fact that they may not continue as a class together with Mrs. Gruwell for their Junior and Senior year. As shown in the scene, Mrs. Gruwell had successfully created an environment in which students felt that they mattered and their voice, and their story, was heard. They felt that they were cared for. They trusted their teacher because of the respect and stability that she gave them.
