Racial Stereotyping is placing people into groups based on their race. Those groups can be anything from good at a sport to murderers. Racial profiling and stereotyping can be extremely harmful. It is a huge problem in American and it has been happening since the end of the Civil War in 1865. That is more than 150 years! An example of  racial stereotyping is all African Americans are good at basketball. There are many African Americans who are very good at basketball but some people stereotype all African Americans as basketball stars. An example of racial profiling is the tragic death of George Floyd. He died because police officers profiled him as a thief because he was African American. Both Racial Profiling and Stereotyping cause so much harm to out Country and they need to be stopped.

Today is May 25 and it is a beautiful day in New York City and I am doing the thing I love. Bird watching in Central Park. At 8 am I saw a lady walking her dog with no leash. ‘Unbelievable’ I thought, there are signs everywhere that say please keep your dog on the leash. I guess I’ll just keep bird watching but then, the dog started walking all over very fragile flowers. First I politely asked the lady to put her dog on the leash because her dog was ruining a lot of flowers. Next, the lady refused to do so. After a bit more bickering she then said ‘I am going to call the police and tell them there is an African American man threatening my life’. Following that I said ‘Please call the police’. Next she dialed 911 and started to ramble on about how I was  threatening her and her dogs life. The whole time I was just standing there. She said she needed the police sent here immediately to deal with me. After she was done talking to the police I said thank you. Finally I stopped recording her and we parted ways. Later I heard that she was fired from her job.

One issue it has caused is that so many innocent African Americans are being convicted for crimes they did not commit. African Americans are 5 times more likely to be arrested than white people. Racial Stereotyping is caused by people remembering one bad thing about that race then applying it to all people of the race.  It has been around for decades and no one has done anything about it. For example, in 1955, Emmet Till was very ruthlessly murdered because he was allegedly flirting with a white woman. Because many of many law enforcers are racist, African Americans are 5 times more likely to be stopped by police than white people are.  Due to many Police being racist, ⅔ of African Americans in this country have said that they do not trust police officers. Because many police officers stereotype African Americans as criminals, many African Americans greatly suffer under the law. Racism has led to so many deaths in our country. For example the death of George Floyd. Because the police officer racially stereotyped George Floyd as a thief, the police officer treated Mr. Floyd differently then he most likely would’ve treated a white person. Racism can negatively affect so many African Americans. According to a study done by the NAACP, all the police brutality against African Americans has caused many of them to have very poor mental health and has caused some to be scared to even go outside

One plan to resolve this issue is this past summer around 26 million Americans went to Washington DC to protest for BLM. That is amazing, because with so many people it shows how big of a problem this really is. When there are that many people there, then other people start to pay attention then more people take action to fix the problem. Another way this problem can be resolved is if everyone is more open-minded then we will most likely not have these issues. Racial Stereotyping and Racial Profiling is caused because of what people think about a certain race. If everyone just tries to forget about previous stereotypes then they would be able to see the good side of people rather than just throwing everyone into 1 group and calling them bad. Another problem is that many African Americans, around 50% (according to a study done by MSU) who get arrested are completely innocent.  To prevent this, before police officers arrest someone they should take a minute to think about who they are arresting, and why they are arresting them. This could prevent a lot of innocent people from going to jail. Another solution people have been raising awareness of this on different social media platforms. This is very helpful because then more people will know about the problem and the more people who know, the faster we can fix this. Even though this problem  is a massive plague in our society, there are so many people doing so many things to fix this issue. Another solution is to help support Representative Jamaal Bowman’s COUP act. This would start a deep investigation into the Capitol Police officers who allegedly let protesters into the capitol and it would look at any ties between Capitol Police and any White Supremacy Chats, Websites, ext.
