In the pencil case scene, Ruth gets self-conscious about buying the case from the Sale, just like this scene where she gets self-conscious about wanting to work in the open plan office. Also, especially when Kathy caught her looking at the office plan she got "cross" just like in the pencil case scene when Ruth became "cross" when Kathy brought it up to her. So after the incident, Kathy sort of reinforced the idea that Miss G had a special place in her heart for Ruth-which made Ruth happy. "But the point is, I said it standing right behind Ruth, and I could see she was pleased" (of 46 vol 1). Her self consciousness and low self esteem have been a common trend throughout both parts of the novel. Another area of the novel where Ruth is mentally effected is in part 1 when Kathy exposes her for lying about the pencil case she has. Although Kathy did seem to be jealous, she gets the truth out of Ruth. Peter J wants to be an actor, "We were just talking about what it would feel like if we became actors. What sort of life it would be." Kathy knows the truth about what Ruth is saying but chooses not to expose her this time. This shows an evolution in Kathy and Ruth's relationship. Kathy has grown to understand Ruth's mannerism and is able to realize her insecurities and does not want to hurt Ruth again. When Ruth is talking about this fantasy she is trying to elevate herself and show off in front of Chrissie and Rodney the same way she was trying to show off infront of the girls at Hailsham.
