2. The key successes would definitely have to be the fluidity, the image in a weird way flows, the patterns on the watermelon give off the same energy as the islands and patterns on a globe. The shadow has worked very well as a globe is also cylindrical, using a similar shape has given a very natural look.

3. The colours have been really thought out. She had used muted colours for the background to make the vibrant green of the watermelon stand out. The lighting is one of its biggest successes. They have used editing tools to include an even lighting throughout. This could have been done using things like the brush took and gradients.

I’m unsure what the concept might be but the first thing I think when looking at the manipulation is that a watermelon, especially that one is very fresh and ripe and it’s taking the place of a globe which symbolises the world. I think she might be hinting at a more modern concept of saving the world, hinting at the fact the world and our ecosystem could be as fresh and healthy as that fruit. In the other side, fruit also rots very quickly, so she could be symbolising the rotting of humanity, showing a much darker side of things including war, world hunger, pollution, gas usage, showing that we as a globe are destroying and rotting our planet. In both directions I think the concept is fantastic and I think she portrayed it really well, both deliver an important message that more people need to start listening to.

2. The key successes in this image I think are getting the blue background to shine through the balloons, also the editing to leave a little bit of red which acts as the root of the balloon, I feel this really helped tie the photograph together.

3. I really like the harmony that has been used with the range of blues, purples and greens. It makes the image very easy on the eyes and also captivates you. Another thing I think is really good Is the lighting that is evenly spread across the image and the reflections that have been captured within the balloons, I feel this really ties the image together and gives it an in depth feel rather than the image being flat. 

2. The key successes in this photograph are first the fact she’s managed to make it all look very real, the editing has been done carefully so that it all flows. The colours are bright and allow the photo to have a vibrant tone. Another key success is that she hasn’t forgotten to put shadows in, the basket creates a very realistic shadow that probably wasn’t on the original image giving the composition depth

3. The colours are very thought out as she has used a bright vibrant green against a white background, this allows the colour to stand out and really get them message across to the viewer. The lighting has been edited so that it’s coming in at an angle, this has also been done on the wrist and hand, creating a sense of realism. 

4. I think the message the photographer was trying to convey is how fresh the perfume smells, this is a commercial based manipulative edit. The photographer is tempting the viewer to buy the perfume because it has a fresh sent like clean clothing, I think this has been successful because the the smell of clean clothing is very fresh and comforting. 

2. The key successes of this image would definitely have to be the shadow. She has managed to create a full shadow as if it was taken as a while and not two separate images. This gives the image a sense of realism and can make the viewer feel quite uncomfortable.

3. The colours of this image have worked well as the pink background sort of harmonises with the white and orange of the cigarette, this allows the image to flow making it easy on the eyes, it also gives the image a very simplistic look. 

4. I think the message the photographer was trying to convey is the bad smell that follows a smoker, that they may as well be the cigarette themselves, this works well as it makes the viewer feel quite self conscious as they don’t want to smell like that creating a sort of discomfort. 

2. The key successes of this image had to be the sharp shadow under the bottom of the heel, this gives the image a sense of realism and depth. The catchlights on the heels also give the image a shiny look, this makes the heels look very clean and new. 

3. This image has been composed using only browns and pinks, this creates harmony letting the image flow perfectly, connecting each element. The lighting has been positioned to create catchlights to help make the shoes look appealing to the viewer but also create Shadow and depth, this means it would have been shot from above. The photographer has also added more shadow on the back heel to make it seem further away in the photo, this gives the photo realistic look as it’s not flat. 

4. I think the message the photographer is trying to convey is quite funny as most people that have worn heels can relate to the feeling. The feeling that it might just snap sending your ankle to the side. This has been done well as a cone is very fragile and can break easily, this relation gives you the same feeling as you do when wearing the heels, creating a sense of humour and discomfort. 

The disco ball is used as the snails shell. 

The lighting is perfect in this image , if the light was to bright, the disco ball would be more shiny because its a shiny object. The repeated pattern on the disco ball looks like the pattern on an actual shell. There is a limited colour palette with dark and light shades of grey on the disco ball and also dark and light shades of brown on the snail. The message that this image is trying to give is that snails are shiny and they are very capable animals.

 

 

One of the most well known examples of surrealism is the work of Salvador Dali who induced himself to hallucinate in order to access his subconscious whilst making art, this was a method that came to be known as the paranoiac critical method. This method helped him create images like the persistence of memory, created in 1931, metamorphosis of Narcissus, created in 1937 and my personal favourite the disintegration of the persistence of memory, created in 1954. Another well known artist is René Magritte who was a Belgian surrealist artist known for his depictions of familiar objects in unfamiliar, unexpected contexts which often provoked questions about the boundaries of reality, his work is well known and he created some of the most recognisable images of the 20th century 

Man ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contributor to the dada and surrealist movements. Man ray had a unique approach to photography and his ability to explore the unconscious with everyday items captured the viewer. His two main methods were rayographs and the application of solarisation. Obtaining photograms by placing an object directly on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light, resulting the transfer of an object with tones of various intensities. A more present surrealist photographer is Erik Johan’s son who is a Swedish born artist who’s rested surreal images by combining photographic elements and other materials into surreal scenes, creating worlds that break the boundaries of reality.

The uncanny theory was created by Ernst jentsch who set out the concept but was later elaborated on by sigmund freud in his 1919 essay ‘Das Unheilmliche’ which explores the the eeriness of dolls and waxworks. The uncanny theory explores the idea of the dread we feel in situations where our childish fantasies and fears appear more real and more true than our adult worldviews, an example of situations that can provoke an uncanny feeling include inanimate objects coming alive, thoughts appearing to have an affect in the real world, seeing your double (the doppelgänger effect) and representations of death. It is the idea of something being familiar but also alien at the same time, locating the strangeness in the ordinary. 

One of the most famous examples of 21st century surrealist artists is Marion Peck. peck was born on October 1963 and is now considered one of the most famous pop surrealist artists in the United States. Marion’s painting are filled with mythological references, creating creatures with exaggerated body shapes, monstrous products of modern time. Marion’s practice also deals with the unconscious, buried, dreams and nightmares that rise to the surface. One of the most famous examples of 21st century surrealist photographers is Aida Muluneh who in 2019 became the first black woman to co-curate the Nobel peace prize exhibition and in the following year she returned as a commissioned artists for the prize. Aida Muluneh is an Ethiopian photographer and contemporary artist based in Addis Ababa. Aidas stylised portraits capture facts and fictions of postcolonial Africa. Wearing face paint and theatrical garments, the female subjects stand against bold and graphic backdrops. Her photography shows different issues about life, love and history, Muluneh said her intent with the art is to provoke questions about our life, the people’s and different nations. 

An art movement in Germany known as Dada used photomontage to protest during World War I. Dada artists used collage to produce sometimes bizarre art.
This movement helped collages to thrive in the art world and many Surrealists and Pop artists began to use Photomontage. 

The collage making technique was heavily inspired by the cubist movement also becoming a principal element within both the dada and surrealist periods or art. Defined by fractured forms and deconstructed subject matter, cubism paired perfectly with the collage approach as it enabled artists to literally piece together a picture from dissimilar components, this also defeated the fear of a painting risking the flat appearance. 

Guernica created in 1937 by pablo Picasso really stands out to me as it shows a much darker picture, showing a lot of raw emotions felt by not just one person but by an entire world and emotions and actions even today people still experience. Guernica was commissioned by the Spanish republic to create a painting in response to the incident. The painting depicts the horrors of war and immense tragedies inflicted on innocent lives, this work has gained monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti war symbol and an embodiment of peace

Endouard Taufenbachs ‘Arthur’ and ‘Simone’ from the series specular are both taken in in relation to gender issues and intimate moments of daily life. The original images are very suggestive and sometimes erotic but the way they have reassembled them makes the photography difficult to see. 

Alma haser has always found identical twins fascinating, finding it incredible that there are two versions of the exact same person, hard to tell apart. Alma photographer sets of identical twins and made them into identical jigsaw puzzles, she then swapped every other piece of their puzzles, completely mixing them half and half not always knowing where their, eyes mouth and lips would end up, the result is an pair of eerie, unrecognisable port trails no longer seen as completely identical, they are unique. 

Surrealism originated in the 1910s and early 20s as a literary movement that experimented with a new mode of expression called automatic writing, or automatism, which sought surrealist's to release the unbridled imagination of the subconscious challenging notions of normality through the power of photography ie Strange shapes, floating body parts and bizarre landscapes.
