One of the main motifs present through out the novel and specifically act 2 is one in which Romeo and Juliet are symbolized as the moon and sun.

For example, in Act 2, Scene 2, Romeo says (in regards to Juliet), "O, speak again, bright angel". He often refers to her as 'bright' or 'light' which can be seen as symbol for the sun.

When we first meet Romeo, he is infatuated with Rosaline. We are informed of this when Benvolio says, "the fair Rosaline whom thou [Romeo] so lovest" (Act 1, line 360). Despite this, Romeo falls in love with Juliet upon first sight. What does this say about his character and his relationship with Juliet?

The idea of class in Romeo and Juliet

In Scene 2 of Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet, the Lord Capulet hands his servant a paper with names of all the guests he has to invite written on it, oblivious to the fact that the servant cannot read. Romeo has to read it to him. " Stay, fellow; I can read." (1.358) Does the Capulet's obliviousness to his own servant's capabilities signal a weak understanding of his own people or a sheltered nature? How does this differ from the way the Montagues treat their servants? Is this a possible factor in their feud?

When we first learn of Romeo's romantic life, we are told that he is in love with a girl that does not love him back. We know this when Romeo says, "She will not stay the siege of loving terms" (1.241). As Act 1 progresses into Act 2, he is in love with a different girl, who instead reciprocates his feelings, named Juliet, which then leads to the true conflict in the play.

Emerging theme: Love worth dying for

One of the clear emerging themes in this play is the morbid nature of the love story being acted, and in a way, that romantic love is worth dying for. For one, in the prologue to Act 2, the chorus sings, "Now old desire doth in his death-bed lie" (1.780) This symbolizes the impending death that the mutual desire for each other that Romeo and Juliet possess will cause.

Central Idea: Parental Concerns

One of the main keystones of this play is the way each of the lovers' parental concerns affects them. In Act 1, when Juliet, the Nurse, and Lady Capulet are speaking to each other about Juliet getting married, Lady Capulet says, "Marry, that 'marry' is the very theme
I came to talk of. Tell me, daughter Juliet,
How stands your disposition to be married?" (1.448-450). Juliet replies that she does not want to be married yet, especially to Paris. Though Juliet's feelings about marriage change, her feelings about Paris do not. The concept of parents having different ideas than kids about what they should do is a major idea in this play.
