Ancient Peru was home to many Andean civilizations. One of the most important groups in Peru was the Inca civilization, which was captured in 1533 by Spanish conquistadors. Peru declared its independence in 1821, and the remaining Spanish groups were defeated in 1824. After many years of military rule, Peru switched to a democratic leadership in 1980. After this leadership change, Peru began to have economic problems. Then President Alberto Fujimori was elected in 1990 and a huge change was seen the economy. Poverty and unemployment have decreased, and now Peru has one of the best economies in Latin America.
