<title>Review: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the newly released prequel to Collins&#39; &#39;The Hunger Games&#39; trilogy. This book was captivating right from the beginning due to the fact that the audience (having read the previous books) would have ideas and notions about the main character, Snow. However, Collins does her best to take readers on quite the emotional, tongue biting, rollercoaster. </title>

<title>Age &amp; Audience: this books recommended for readers age 13 and up. This is definitely a book for middle-high schoolers due to some violent themes, and difficult/ emotional plots. This book would be interesting to readers who like, action, drama, romance, dystopia themes and/or have read the previous Hunger Games books. </title>

<title>Serravallo Activity Idea: I could very easily have students read the whole Hunger Games trilogy along with this book; and use Serravallo 13.17 &#39;Compare Books for New Ideas&quot;. Since these books are all the same series, yet this book is a prequel, it would be really fun for students to work together to figure out how President Snow went progressed and changed from one book to another. What caused those changes? Were they good or bad? Is Snow a good character or a bad character?... etc. </title>

<title>Review: &#39;Smile&#39; is a fun coming of age novel following the middle school troubles Raina faces. Readers are invited in to Raina&#39;s life, a newly fledged 6th grader. We follow Raina as she attempts to find her bearings in the sixth grade with style, charm and braces of course! As we follow her along, we watch Raina struggle with the new, embarrassing braces she is forced to get; on top of trying to make friends, finding cute boys and so many more embarrassing, yet all to real stories. </title>

<title>Serravallo Activity Idea: 6.11, Character Comparisons; This activity would be interesting with &#39;Smile&#39; due to the complexity of the changing relationship between Raina and Nicolle (her ex best friend). This activity would help to emphasize how these two characters are similar in more ways then we would think. And emphasize how relationships change throughout growing-up. </title>

<title>Review: &#39;New Kid&#39;, is about Jordan Banks, seventh grade kid struggling to make sense of the world. Not only is middle school already hard enough, Jordan is now being forced to go to a new school; putting him in the awkward position of being &#39;the new kid&#39;, which is the worst. Jordan takes readers on his journey of trying to figure out how to navigate being in the seventh grade, make new friend, keep old ones, and become the artist he wants to be. This was such a fun read, even though I am in college now, I could totally relate to Jordan throughout the book.</title>

<title>Serravallo Activity Idea: 6.1, &#39;How&#39;s the Character Feeling?&#39;; this activity focuses on inferring a characters feelings and emotions. A huge plot in &#39;New Kid&#39; was Jordan, and all these good, bad and negative feelings he was experiencing with all the changes in his life; and I think it would be really useful for kids to focus on how he was feeling, to better understand the book. One of the prompts that goes along with this activity is, &#39;check the picture and infer clues about how the character is feeling/ what they are thinking&#39;. This prompt would be awesome for this book since it is a graphic novel, and looking at the pictures is such an important aspect to reading graphic novels.</title>

<title>Review: &#39;Nancy Drew and the Secret of the Old Clock&#39; was one of the very first chapter/series books that I read when I was about 7 or 8! Though this is an older book series, it is so fun, interesting and really emphasizes some serious girl power! Nancy Drew, a young woman who doesn&#39;t take no for an answer, just so happens to find interesting mysteries wherever she goes. Her father, a protective single dad lawyer, does not always approve of her mystery solving, but trusts Nancy to always do the right thing. Nancy is always very fashionable, polite and smart; all while being smart, quick and strong (a great role model for young girls). Nancy is driving down the road one day when she sees a little girl run into the road and nearly get run over by a speeding car. We follow Nancy as she takes the little girl home, and become involved in the strange mysteries that the little girl invited. </title>

<title>Age &amp; Audience: This book is an easy read, recommended for ages 8&amp; up. This book will probably interest mostly little girls (The Hardy Boys series is a fun alternative for boys). Usually very mild mysteries, but could be intense in some spots of the book. </title>

<title>Review: This book is based off of a real gorilla named Ivan who grew up captive in a mall zoo. He was forced to paint to entertain the people who came to visit. We also meet a young elephant named ruby, that Ivan befriends and decides that she needs better. Readers follow this sad, but heart-warming story of Ivan and Ruby as we see, through their eyes, the sad situation they are put in. And as they watch as animal activists fight for the zoo to be shut down. Though, this story is sad, it is a great learning experience for young readers This is such good book for young readers, that truly brings attention to animal cruelty and captivity.</title>

<title>Review: This poem left me speechless. So beautiful and powerful. Inn fact, I bought this book so that I can have it n my future classrooms. Undefeated is a poem written by Kwame Alexander, then his second daughter was born. The poem follows the lives of notorious black people, and time periods in which black humans had to be stronger than most. It is written to all of our black friends and family, who need a reminder that they are important and powerful. Not only was the poem incredibly moving, the illustrations were just as powerful. At the end of the poem, Alexander wrote out who each of the people were in the story, as well as some of the events he mentioned. Absolutely will be a future classroom staple.</title>

<title>Serravallo Activity Idea: 12.4 Say back what you heard. This would be a good activity since most of the lines in this book are fairly straightforward, and could be easily repeated back to enforce the message. Not only could the teacher have them repeat, but perhaps the students could take turns making inferences about what a specific line meant. </title>

<title>Review: &#39;Where the Wild Things Are&#39; is a classic, fun fantasy book that leads readers imaginations to all new places. While I believe implementing new literature into classrooms is important, I believe it is just as important to incorporate classic literature well. This book is wild and imaginative; I hope that when my future children read this book they are inspired to be just as imaginative as Max, hopefully with slightly better manners. </title>
