Cris Martin G. Sonsing
Faculty of Pharmacy - Dept of Biochemistry
4B - Biochemistry

I am the type of person who prefer not to open up conversations with people especially to those who are stranger to me. Likewise, I am not a loud person and most of the times I prefer to be quiet.

Technology changed the person as a social being. It provides both positive and negative impact to the social development of a person. Personally, advancements in technology such as email platforms, online chat sites, as well as social media applications boost my confidence (at least a little) to open up conversations and interact with the people around me. I can easily chat and send messages to my family, friends, previous classmates, as well as schoolmates. It seems to be a lot easier to build a much larger network of people.

Likewise, advancements in technology made my everyday life as a student more easy. I can easily chat my classmates for updates and send my professors an email to request further explanations on the lessons I don't understand. Our course facilitators also provide us online materials and even give us online lectures that can further boost our understanding of the lesson. Technology provides us, students, the platform for better communication with our professors that can greatly enhance the education system.

Most especially, technology provides our family the means of better communication. As a child of an OFW, technological advancements helped our family to be always connected with one another. Updates and messages are a lot faster and we can always converse with our loved ones abroad.

Technology also diminished our interactions with real people. In my case, this became an excuse for me not to fully develop my intrapersonal skills. However, I know that it is still not the end and I still have chances to strengthen these skills. And I am certain, that I can overcome this personal struggles also with the help of technology.

I can remember when I would play on the streets. Today, I can still see children playing on the streets but the games are more advanced than the Chinese garter and Patintero I used to play.

Technology has enclosed itself in everything I do. Health, communication, education, information, and entertainment – there is no aspect of our life in which its impact is not apparent.

Traditionally, communication was carried out through personal meetings, handwritten letters, phone calls, and faxes. But, with technology it enabled me to know a person’s day to day life through their social media status and post. Instead of making a phone call I prefer to chat with the person online through Facebook and other social media platform. Even important conversations are made through video and conference calls instead of personal meetings. Moreover, I can move to the other side of the world and live away from my loved ones yet allowing me to be in real time contact with them.

Education is another aspect of our life. Technology has helped me grow over the years, it has helped me to learn and to continue learning. The horizon of education has been extended beyond what we could have imagined.

The educational system has totally changed. When I was younger, I used to share handwritten notes with friends. However, through technology I just save everything on a computer, take pictures of the lectures, record the lectures and share it via email or messenger. Even the virtual classrooms or online classes are more popular nowadays. I can quickly obtain information and knowledge on any subject with the help of technology.

I used to purchase my reading materials from a bookstore but most of the books are already available online as an e-books so there is no need for me to go to the bookstore.

With the technological advancement, I can do things with just one click. I used to leave home for shopping, banking, hotel and flight booking tickets, dining, and purchasing groceries. Now, everything can be done so fast when using an online platform which has made my life easier.

Technology has made some benefits to my life as well as disadvantages. It has also deprived a lot of things like personal meetings, mailing greeting cards, and handwritten letters to our loved ones. Today, I am more dependent on technology as it has created lots of opportunities for me and the future generation.

Past vs. Present: Technology Changed My Life

Giana Daphne S.J. Yu
4B-Biochemistry

When I was a child, I am already aware that technology has already improved people’s lives, but as I was growing up, I can understand better how technology is constantly changing our lives. When I was 6 years old, my dad will always tell me how lucky I am to use my computer, “Boka”. It was my desktop computer back then, the one with thick monitor and I named it Boka because that was the brand. He told me how they go to the library to search for everything that they need for their homeworks and I was just there searching for the things I need. That time, my dad will buy sets of diskette where we saved our files, pictures, and videos. We had too many diskettes because you can just save one file with one of it. So, every diskette should be labeled properly. After 3 years, we bought a flat screen desktop computer that can read CDs, DVDs, and even flash drives. My life became more convenient because those things can store more than a diskette. I can also store my favorite barney movies and Barbie movies then watch it several times. Well, those were just some of the events showing how technology improved my life.

As time passes by, technology is still changing my life and I wanted to highlight some of those experiences that I noticed the most. First, from using the telephone to chatting with my friends through social media. When I was in grade school, I used to call my best friend using our telephone for hours. She became my classmate when we were in grade 1 but then she studied at home starting grade 2, so in order to catch things up with each other, I always call her. Now, I will just use my smartphone to send a text, call, or even log in my facebook and chat my friends to communicate. It is very convenient because I can send some stickers or GIFs in order to express my emotions better, I can even send files right away, I can also send pictures easily, and I can also talk to them via video messages, or voice messages.

Second, when I was in grade 3, my mom bought me a kitchen set that I always play at home. I used to play that because it feels like I am really cooking. The hardest part was to clean those up every time I am playing it. Then, when I was in grade 5, I was given my PSP. I downloaded there my favorite games including cooking mama where I can play virtual cooking. No things to clean up, but I achieved the same happiness. During that time, I realized how playing was elevated in another level. I spent most of my day playing with my PSP.

Third, during my grade school, our teachers in English and Filipino will always require us to bring a Filipino-English dictionary. So my father bought me one at National Bookstore. It was heavy to carry every day since it’s a thick dictionary but it was more complete than the pocket dictionaries. Now, I downloaded Merriam-Webster application on my phone and when I need to search for the things I do not understand , I will just type the word and it will give me the meaning right away. I can also use web browsers if I am connected to internet for a better and wider vocabulary.

Fourth, before physical books are the only option to read. Now, we have those e-books that we can download from the internet. Physical textbooks are still way better but for someone who wanted to be practical, e-books will do. With these, you do not need to spend money in order to read. Especially to those in the field where reading is a must, e-books are more convenient and practical.

Technology made my life easier. It helps me a lot with my work and I can’t imagine my life without it anymore. Tons of reports and research works are very convenient to do. Though with all these things, we should keep one thing in mind. Technology is there to make our lives easier but it should not influence us to be lazy and dependent to it.

Jefferson M. Catacutan
4C-Biochemistry

I grew up playing with my robots and toy cars. A chair is my throne, the stairs were mountains, a cup of hot water is a sign of a tea party, and thunder means that Zeus is angry. My world is filled with magic, through my imagination. I used to play with my classmates after class. A year, after year, after year. Only then I was allowed to play video games with my cousins, then I thought, those characters should be the standard of my imagination.

Before, I have the power to lift up a car, now I have to be superman just to portray that kind of power. When I sit on my chair, I am the king of my own kingdom, but now my name should be Arthur, just to rule the land.

Technology is evolving, phones are made, cameras were developed, and satellites were produced. Sure, they made my life a lot easier. Finishing my assignment, studying for an exam, and even reading just for fun. Then social media came to the world. All I can say is that, I miss being a king. I miss having the power to lift up a car. But technology engulfed us to a realm where we think we are better, but the truth is, technology made us lazy and spoiled.

Technology has its own advantages. In a span of two months, I'll be marching in a black toga and my college diploma in my hands. Let's face it. We could've not finished this without the help of technology, internet and social media. But one thing's for sure, yes I may be capable with all the knowledge I have, yes I am hardworking enough to be on this place after four years, but I'm still engulfed in the realm created by technology. This isn't inevitable, this is who we are now. Our generation and technology became one entity.

My hands are still reaching the sky, my body is floating through the air, and I can feel the soft breeze of the wind. Technology made me who I am, but I am still one with nature. I am a king of my own kingdom.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN ME AND TECHNOLOGY

Abara, Gieanne Louise J.
4B - Biochemistry

I am the type of child who loves to go out and interact with children my age. My mother used to tell me how I would always find ways to make new friends and that I would always approach lonely kids and ask if I can play with them. I remember growing up without insecurities, I remember being so confident about what I can do when I was a kid. I remember I'd volunteer on different school activities, mostly dancing, singing, performing, anything that can be done on stage. My childhood has shaped me into the theater loving kid that I was (well I still am). It taught me how I could freely share my passion and talent to anyone around me. Being a kid back in the day was easy. Being yourself was enough for you to be accepted.

When technology took over, everything changed for me. Technology taking over your whole being means being exposed to social media and when that day came, insecurities started to build up. I felt like I was being judged by people I don't know wherever I go. It exposed me to societal standards that I should be following and If I don't, I'd be ridiculed. It has given me different impressions on what I should be as a person, as a woman. It has given me the thought of being someone I am not just to be able to survive without getting emotionally, physically and mentally hurt by anyone.

Don't get me wrong, technology has also enhanced my life especially as a student from the health sciences. It helped me shaped my understanding of every major phenomena happening across the universe and the principles that defines it. It has molded my ability to critically analyze situations not only in theory but also situations happening in our society. Technology made it easier for us to be connected with the people that we love, be involved in significant events across the world and exercise our rights as people.

Basically technology has it's ups and downs when I was growing up. The pros and cons are still competing on who's heavier on the weighing scale but for now, it's completely balanced. As a kid, growing up without technology was an easy and carefree life for me. But now, as an adult, living a world without technology would be hard. I guess what I am trying to say here is that, we all have to learn on what the real role of technology is in our lives instead of letting it run our lives.

To end this thought bubble, attached here is a picture of me as a 3-year old kid featuring all my stuffed friends in the background.

Evolution of Technology and How it Affects Me

Sia, Michelle Joy G.
4C- Biochemistry
Technology – The development of machinery and equipment through the application of scientific knowledge and engineering, is the proof of progress, but the question is how much of its progress has it impacted the culture of our lives, most especially, mine? In order to compare, a basis of comparison is needed, and the said basis would be: The past, a time where technology had room for a large potential, and has only simplified lives in a miniscule aspect.

During my ages 5-10, Technology only allowed me certain aspects of comfort. This aspect of comfort was my privilege to ride a vehicle, a vehicle that allowed me to travel a certain distance with minor effort and short time. This privilege was not enjoyed in the past, cities had to develop their own way of education due to schools being inaccessible due to distance. The improvement of machinery and engineering allowed distances to be shortened, and accessible. From one tip of the island to the other, a vehicle, you can ride. Traveling from continent to continent in the shortest amount of time, an airplane, you can fly. Distance was becoming a Superficial aspect, creating bigger connections from around the world, but little did we know that as much as technology progressed, the superficiality of Distance brought out a blur as to what connectivity really means.

In my teenage years, the development of social media in the internet has boomed. Friendster, Yahoo Messenger, & Skype, the pioneers of social networking, were three different programs with different functions that allowed each other to prosper, But the birth of Facebook created a whole new platform of Connectivity, which trumped these three pioneers. Facebook allowed you to view profiles, chat, and video call all at the same time with multiple users. Facebook allowed me to stay in touch with friends, relatives, and loved ones, even far away. With this, I used it to communicate with my cousin that lived in Canada, and still maintained a relationship with him. I also used this to communicate with friends who live in Cagayan De Oro, despite me not being able to go home in certain days. Facebook showed me how distance was already superficial, how distance was only a physical aspect which could be overcame with machinery. Distance was no longer a problem, and Connectivity was apparent. But as the years progressed, Facebook became a norm, became a need to everyone, and despite having the people right in front of them to talk to, Facebook was still a priority. This concept of connectivity with multiple people, also became superficial. We were connected but distant at the same time. Late night dinners, became a dinner without talking. Connectivity was already not a privilege, but a distraction as to what is becoming a social liability.

All in all, my life was impacted with how connectivity in this apparent world was blurred. Distance was already a superficial aspect in our life due to connectivity not being an apparent problem. But this connectivity, allowed us to connect with people only in virtual realities. My late-night dinners with friends became something that was showed off in stories, and a tapping contest as to how many words per minute we can type. Long- car rides where we can appreciate the radio became a quiet one where people listened to their own music using headphones. Things that which I enjoyed, a long car ride from our house to Camiguin with my parents, & A Late-night dinner with friends who I haven’t talked to in a very long while, all became a blur due to the existence of these “connectors”. So connectivity in the end, became a superficiality

Dionne Audrey G. Go
4C-Biochemistry

Technology has been part of the world as we grew up. We were part of the generation in which we were able to experience the traditional ways of living shortly before the modern world took over. It has been a great impact and innovation that technology improved in such ways that shaped the nations. However, technology has also been bad in harmful ways.

An example of the bad is that people can't seem to put down their smartphones or they have been obsessed with social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. that they have allowed technology has been controlling their lives and time.

Despite the bad, the technology has also imparted innovation in terms of long distance calls for family and friends that are abroad as it provides means of communication to stay connected. My mom would always tell me that our generation is lucky to have laptops, USBs, unlike before they had to bring heavy books to school or search information via encyclopedia. It is true because technology has been helpful for me in a way that if one day it disappears, everything would become a hassle.

Teenagers nowadays don't get to experience carrying heavy books because they are readily available in softcopies that people use nowadays. Without technology, basic need of the people would have not been fulfilled easily. It is a tool as a means to improve our daily lives, But we must never forget that there are limitations the come with using technology.

Has Technology Been Good to You?

Bonguit, Sharah Kristine G.
4B-Biochemistry

I grew up in an environment where I was shielded from exploring new things as they were deemed dangerous for my age. Even going to the basketball court just a few blocks away from our house to play with the other kids was not an ordinary scenario in my childhood years. Don’t get me wrong, I did play outside our house but only the LITERAL outside of my house. My friends tend to ring the doorbell on our gate themselves as some sort of permission to have me play with them outside and we did enjoy playing within the vicinity of my house. These experiences tie to the fact that I was always too shy to approach other people first as I see everything as strangely unfamiliar. I get to interact and converse with people through time but initiating a conversation was never my forte.

Contrary to one of the primary purposes of technology today that is to communicate with people from far away, I was introduced to using technology by a game. I remember the first time I ever used the Internet was to access a Narnia game as I was a huge fan of the movie. My mom would let us use the Internet for a few hours and re-orient us to the real world. My siblings and I were very civilized when we eventually had our own access to the Internet. We would tend to schedule our “computer time” and strictly follow it so as to avoid fighting over it and to play all the games we want. We saw technology as the holy grail of our childhood but seeing as how technology evolved now, I don’t think it’s true for me anymore.

As a student, technology really provided me with everything. I had access to all these sites that aided me in my homework, research, and thesis. Not to mention all the advanced equipments we can use now and applications I could actually download to make my life easier. These may be true but technology also became an avenue for people to blindly criticize and shower the world with negativity. It makes me sad to think that some people see social media as a means to cause damage to other people without having to confront them personally. They always say that communication is key but doing it through abstract online messages? I don’t think so.

This gave me the motivation to maximize the use of technology not for my personal grudges but for the benefit of the greater good. I think that the baby steps I take even by the simple act of avoiding posting spoilers from a good movie could make the online world better for everyone else. As much as I use technology to connect with other people, I never forget the essence of personal interactions. Having seen the bad side of using technology made me realize the good things I could do to minimize its cruel effects. Technology, especially that on the aspect of using social media, has helped me connect with people better but more importantly, it helped me see how badly our world needs positivity in today’s age.

Harvy Jay N. Esmundo
4C-BC

Way back during my childhood days, i always used to go and play outside: running (wildly) on the streets, playing tag and hide and seek, etc. Being sweaty and panting are just my every afternoon's occurence. As years passed by, my playmates disappeared one by one; their families migrated themselves into different places. After that, i only played outside less frequently and used to play indoors with my lego collection back then. And then the "Family Computer" came (the keyboard with controllers being connected into a TV) and from then on i never went outside to play and just stayed indoors playing video games. Technology suppressed my social life back on my childhood.

During my elementary days (Grade 4 or 5) i made a quite number of new friends through being classmates with them. We did hangout sometimes playing games or sports. And then the Friendster came out, which expanded my group of friends. That social media platform helped me reach out to different people and converse with them. Technology helped me socialize more.

Today, technology is helpful in many ways: for academic purposes, entertainment, current affairs etc, as we students and other people use it and depend on them in their everyday lives. But, it is also harmful as it is helpful. Technology, such as the internet, can be used to harm people emotionally, put their morale down, and even make a threat on other people and are seen often nowadays.

One thing that this technology taught me is to be cautious. It started from immersing myself into the video games i've played like acquiring the ways the character portrays into the real life, then it grew to being cautious about what to post on Facebook, what to comment, what to react. And then it further grew into me thinking twice on what I see on the internet.

Technology is good and all, but it all depends on the intentions of the people who are using and developing it. By being cautious, one can protect him/herself and the people around him/her.

Jarmaine Sianne M. Barrameda
Faculty of Pharmcy
4C - Biochemistry

When I was young, I always wanted to use every kind of gadget that I see because it fascinated me so much. If it is someone else's, I would use it very greedily until the owner takes it back. If I ever gotten one, I would use it non-stop to the point that I would use it less. But as I got older, I learned the importance in the use of gadgets aside from entertainment. After getting my fill in playing games, using apps related to social media, and watching videos, films, etc., I learned that I should use my gadgets less than I should – to appreciate my surroundings from time to time because I am always surrounded by technology that it hinders me from seeing the bigger picture. I learned that life is ever so fragile to be always on the internet and use gadgets. While I try to connect with people who aren’t beside me, I forget the people who are near me – especially my family. But I am not saying that technology is a hindrance, it’s the way we use it that is the problem. Therefore, the most important thing I have learned is that to minimize the use of technology in any given scenario. Let me give two examples: (1) when I am with my family, I play with my brother using my phone for a while then talk with him about trivial matters to important life-decisions; (2) when I am alone in a public place, I sit on a bench and look at the scenery or busy environment and think about nothing or life. Lastly, technology is a gift that was developed in order to make our lives easier but when we abuse it, we drift away from what is truly important – meaningful social interaction.

Tuazon, Lara Monique S.
Faculty of Pharmacy
4C-Biochemistry

Growing up, it is evident that technology continues to evolve and change the ways of life. I can remember when, as children, we would play on the streets, using whatever we can see and touch outside to play with. A small playground can become a child’s magical forest kingdom, a Terabithia constructed by mere imagination, and that would be enough to occupy one self. Today’s generation still have children playing on the streets, but their toys much more advanced than the resources available in the past. Suffice to say, the change in technology has had a huge impact on my life.
During my elementary days, I remember during our computer lab classes, the monitors and desktops were as big and thick as boxes, games that we would play were all pixelated and minesweeper was played to pass our time. As compared to highschool, technology definitely grew and evolved with us. Rather than going to the library and spending hours reading encyclopaedias to read all about the american history of the Tea Act, the school provided the students with a laptop which took less than a minute to search the web about almost anything. Technology has helped me to grow in a faster rate. Technology has also enabled us to move to other sides of the world and live away from our relatives yet it has allowed me to be in real time contact with them. Growing up in an international school, it has been a norm that friends would come and go, new students entering the school, old transferring to different countries. Technology has kept friendships even with large distances between one another.
The evolution of technology has shaped me as a social being by having less fear of expanding my learning and curiosities. It pushes me to explore the unknowns in different parts of the world , expanding the limitations in life.

John Rex Gabriel Quiambao 4-C Biochemistry, 2019
Humans have always been social beings. During ancient times, humans survived by functioning as communities - hunting in packs, forming tribes, passing on knowledge, and so on. In order to succeed back then, communication very well is key, and before, everything were articulated verbally and or was written.

In today's world, things are rather different. Because of technological advancements, communication has drastically improved. In today's world, we are capable of contacting people from all around the globe, and a repertoire of all human knowledge is openly accessible.

People in this time often resort to the convenience these technological advancements provide. Our generation - generation Z - had lived our early lives without advanced technology. Back then, there were no smartphones, tablets, or laptops, but a bulky desktop, Nokia bar and flip phones, and internet that doesn't allow simultaneous usage of landlines. Our growth was parallel with the development of modern technology.

Personally, I try to minimize my use of these developments for communication. I seldom text, and I often ask people first before resorting to using search engines. I try to harvest the advantages of both. I see technology as something that helped me become less skittish. It has developed my confidence when I was growing up, allowing me to share my artworks, shots, and insights that I couldn't have shared to a bigger circle of people otherwise. I had also taken part in several discussions with strangers in social media, hence, effectively making me more social in some aspects. Although, it had also made me more comfortable in engaging in social interactions virtually rather than in person but not in a serious magnitude.

I see the development and use of gadgets and other technological devices as highly beneficial with moderation - I do not agree to toddlers getting handed tablets for play, for example. Technology, like everything else in life should have its limits.

Anish V. Phabiani
4CBC

I personally believe technology, specifically the internet and social media, has greatly influenced my ideologies and my social beliefs. It has helped me shape my opinion on several topics that are considered controversial along with allowing me to learn a lot about different aspects and fields of life. With these tools, I am able to engage in discourse with other people on different sides of the topic and gather their viewpoints in order to gain a whole view on things. Although there are benefits to technology, of course there are many cons. Technology makes us more dependent. It’s definitely a smart solution but we are rendered helpless without our modern tools to aid us during unprecedented outcomes. Social media also enforces hateful ideologies and harassment in the form of cyberbullying because of the animosity that some social media platforms promise. Nonetheless, I believe that social media is at its embryonic stage and can definitely grow to become better with optimization.

Ragos
4CBC
Technology has been a big part of my daily life and it definitely changed how I manage my time as I grew up with its non-stop development and innovation. Definitely, it has affected me as a social being.
People used to wait for days to get messages from those they wish to communicate with then telephone came where you can reach friends through calling their homelines, but now a call and text message is just one button away through cellular phones. The technology today has a lot to offer. It gives you power to share your thoughts publicly and even share your daily activities on the internet via pictures, updates, and videos that one post online.
With the use of technology, I was able to develop friendships with the small talks you can make so easily. I was also able to reach out to my parents who are staying overseas. Even though it’s hard as you feel very homesick or gloomy at times reaching to your loved ones is just one call/ video chat away and it is as if you are presently with them for couple of minutes. It definitely gives you comfort in a way you know distance wouldn’t stop you from reaching to anyone anytime.

Clarisse Jasmine J. Carlos
4C-Biochemistry

It is really convenient, especially these days, to have our helpers, the technology, that supports our daily lives. From modes of transportation, communication, information dissemination and alike. But, despite the convenience, we also tend to forget the importance of things that once taught us how to really communicate and to socialize. We neglect the fact that sometimes, we don't need the technology we have and we also need to exert efforts in our works
When I was a kid, unlike any other children, I only got to have a cellphone when I was in grade 6 and experienced to play on a desktop on the same age. My mother limits our usage of gadgets and all, as she said that it is harmful for us to drown ourselves texting and playing, which is still true even today. So I always resort to books in order to entertain myself, which I think, is still the best part of my childhood. And we can't afford such gadgets at that time, so we really need to learn the step-by-step process of things without the help of technology.
As I observe children growing these days, they tend to cling on their cellphones and hated socializing, which is very unusual. I am saddened that children stick their worlds on the virtual space the technology brings us. I was lucky that my parents thought me how to be independent with gadgets, because, what will I do if someday these gadgets will not work?

De Guzman, Margaret Alexa C.

Faculty of Pharmacy

Department of Biochemistry

4CBC

I grew up with technology within reach. Having brothers who were already adept with technology at such a young age, it wasn’t hard to follow them. It wasn’t hard to familiarize myself with technology of today because of my upbringing.

I’ve learned so much from using technology, specifically phones and laptops. Technology has helped me learn what the current trend is inside and even outside of the country. It helped me learn about music that was still not known in our city in the province. It helped me communicate with other people, make use of notes that other people have put online and subsequently applied it to classes, have found people to look up to and people famous enough that I somehow grew up with. I have gained knowledge about courses or short courses – just anything that gives extensive and just-enough information about certain topics and whatnot.

However, it was not all fun and games when I was exploring technology. Although, I have found a place where there were a lot of facts and news outside of the classroom, I have rather grew tired because of the toxicity that technology at some point gave me. I took a break at some point in my high school life from using technology because I wasn’t reacting well to it, which goes to show that even though it makes things convenient for me, it still has its downsides, although I have since made use of technology especially now that I am in college. At one point, I was able to share my thoughts on an advocate because of a book club I have found online. It was so good and fulfilling to be a part of something that discusses and celebrates such people. Technology has made it possible to make me a part of that. It also allowed me to access and learn about different cultures and histories in the world which helped me learn about people, be compassionate and emphatic of these people. And this is a part of what made me the person I am now; these things have a played a part in molding my personality and being a social being.

Beatrice Andrea G. Lim
4C-Biochemistry

As a 90's kid, I was still exposed to games that includes dirt, sweat, bruises and exhaustion. It's the first thing that comes into my head when I go to school. Well, when I was an elementary student, I'll never let my day pass without playing my favorite games with my friends. Ohhhh, got so much time. Everything was so fun and true. Winning in games made me feel so proud, especially when I'm teamed up with my favorite friends.

But, of course school wasn't all about playing games and having fun. It also came along with studying. I'm not saying my parents are pressuring me but I want to make them proud. I want to show them that I can have fun and study seriously at the same time. So there I was doing my best, reading books, reviewing on my own and getting things done.

Time flies so fast when you're having fun. Woke up one day and poof, I'm a college student and look at me now halfway there. Wouldn't done all of these without technology. Looking back, I never really needed technology. It wasn't that important to me when I was a kid. Maybe because everything I want was accessible. But today? It's a mixture of complication and convenience.

I was exposed to technology and I loved it. I played games online, I met friends online and I learned a lot online. It made my life a lot easier. If I need to know something for school or for personal things, I'll visit google. If I need something asap, I'll open grabfood, grabdelivery and the like. If I need to connect with friends, share something important or show the world what the hell I'm doing, there are lots of social media apps I could use. My friends always tick me off for being too focused on my phone and calling me Techno Teen. Yes, I got addicted, I got obsessed and I got attached. This is the complication. The moment you get in, there's no turning back.

Johns, Angela Joy P.
Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Biochemistry
4B-Biochemistry

As the youngest child in a family full of diplomats, I have been early exposed to the natural wonders of the world than modern day gadgets. I spent my childhood wandering around different places with my parents and sibling, rather than sitting in a corner and playing video games. I admit that at some point, I could not relate to what my peers deems to be 'in' in terms of entertainment or even children shows. I had more time sitting in the car, exploring the vast views of the wild west of Arizona or beaches along the shorelines of Negros Occidental.

With so much traveling in my hands, I learned to entertain myself through interacting and playing with other kids that I seem to find in several places, watching theatre plays, studying, singing in the car, and reading for pleasure. I did not mind how I seem to be passing opportunities to learn how to play Super Mario or Battleship Galactica. The gadgets I seem to frequently encounter at the time are our car's built-in radio and my phone, where I learned how to play Snake and several other forms of entertainment like making videos and recording myself singing to different theatre songs (mostly from Lion King).

When I reach my teenage years, I started to be more open about the perks of technology. With the rising popularity of Friendster, Facebook and other Social Media platforms, I learned how to go with the flow of different innovations and developments around me. I kept in touch with old friends through these mediums and explored games in Y8.com. I even watched random videos in Youtube. It became a part of my day to day entertainment, as well as my education. Most of the schools I went to used several learning platforms like Bioninja and Studielink to disseminate more informations about our lessons. Schoology has also been a part of my daily high school task, much like our current Eleap Blackboard.

Currently, most of my days are dependent on my gadgets. My phone wakes me up in the morning and holds all my schedule for the week. It also allows me to talk to my parents in Japan, my sister in Spain and my partner in Sweden. My laptop pretty much holds all the lessons I have to study and activities that I have to submit. And my tablet downloads all my favourite Netflix shows for the week, just in case my dorm's internet shuts down.

I have to admit that technology makes our lives more comfortable, but the point still stands that we have to learn how to be independent despite its convenience. Or else, we will lose several moments in our lives that we can never take back.

Living in a Digital Era

Boligor, Lea Marie Lu
Faculty of Pharmacy
4B- Biochemistry

There was a time when I stayed up late, curled up in bed while reading one of the many books stacked up in my room and find myself waking up the next day without recalling how or when I fell asleep. I would then reach out and continue reading from where I left off. There was a time when I tagged along with my mother whenever she goes out to kill my boredom and just enjoy being outside. There was a time when my siblings and I wrote letters to send to our father who was working in Riyadh. There was a time when doing school projects meant scavenging for old magazines or newspapers, hoping to find something pretty enough to cut and stick onto the paper.

Today I find myself asleep while clutching my phone and waking up the next day unlocking it as soon as I open my eyes. Today I spend more time indoors and watch movies or random videos to fill my boredom. Today we could talk with my father and even see him face to face as long as we want as if he was with us. Today I don't even see magazines or newspapers in our house! Every project that needs to be done? Printed!

Personally, technology has served me well. It has been integrated in my daily life that living without it could be difficult. I remember my mother restricting our computer use when I was in elementary especially when the exams are approaching so that we would focus on studying but now, my studying meant using the computer (or in my case, a laptop)! The technology that is known as the internet, gives us access to unlimited information. Whenever I have a hard time understanding the lessons covered in a certain subject, I simply look it up online to look for references that could help me. Most often, professors also use it to disseminate announcements or provide copies of their presentations or references. The internet also provides an avenue for people to share their thoughts, knowledge, and skills to a wide audience. Photography is a hobby of mine, and social media platforms allow me to share some of the photos I took. Recently, I’ve developed an interest for cooking so watching recipe and cooking videos online have been very helpful. Technology in the form of a blender, oven, food processor, and induction stove has also made cooking a lot easier and interesting.

The emerging technology also means new responsibilities. Humans are intelligent beings thus, we have the capability to think of new ways to use certain techs other than the purpose they’re designed to do. Techs are often associated with negative aspects such as its capacity to harm and destroy but technology itself is innocent. It is the individual’s intent that makes us label technology as ‘dangerous’. Also included in the new responsibility from technology is the waste and pollution. There are always new technologies introduced which, at times, make it quite overwhelming for us. We tend to impulsively buy these new techs without considering its practicality or use in our life that when we get tired of it, we just don’t use it anymore. There is also a tendency to buy ‘upgraded’ technology even though what we have is still in perfect condition. Also, some of the techs can be detrimental to the environment so we should learn to control and, as much as possible, avoid the use of such technologies.

Technology definitely shaped the world that undeniably changed the way we are living, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s all good and no bad or no good and all bad. Taking advantage of these techs require balance, control, and a purpose. We should always be conscious of our choices and be mindful of the consequences of our actions.

Lelay, Benjamin A.
Faculty of Pharmacy
4B- Biochemistry

Growing up as a kid, I would always be excited to go home from school and see my best friend, the television. I was the eldest grandson in my mother’s side of the family. Who would I play with? My cousins and sister were all cry babies back then and I had no one to play with. I wasn’t very fond of playing toys unless I really wanted one. We didn’t own a computer back then and cellphones were still useless to me. I thank God that there was already cabled television in our house back then. Binge watching was already trending in our house since I would watch a lot of shows every single day. I had to pretend sleeping during afternoons because I wouldn’t get to watch again. I really loved watching, I would sometimes imitate the cartoons on television and tried to imagine like I was in their world. My imaginary friends were the friendly neighborhood Spider Man, the mighty Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and a lot of superheroes from Marvel and DC. I also pretended to be a power ranger before and sometimes even a bender from Avatar. Barney, Dora, Boots, Blue and Steve were also my imaginary friends but sadly I grew old and forgot about them. As you can see, my world as a kid revolved around cartoons. I’d rather stay at home and watch than interact with other kids outside. Unfortunately, there were only a few kids in our area and most of them were girls. My cousins in my father’s side of the family lived far from us that’s why I had no one to play with. Thankfully, I made friends at school. I would go home sweaty and tired because I was playing with them the whole day. It was also during grade school when I developed my talents and started being active in performances. After school, I would sleep and once again be with my best friend, the television. As technology became advanced little by little, for some reason, I wasn’t fond of them. All I wanted was to watch TV all day. I never had any gaming consoles and I even sucked at playing video games, so I never bothered being interested in them. We already had a computer, but I only used it for school. Yahoo messenger was still present at that time and I used that to chat with my classmates. Facebook was just starting back then and I wasn’t very active. A time came when my grandparents moved to another house, there I met new friends and I played with them every single day during vacation. That was the time when I liked playing outdoors.

When I was in High School, I slowly started making friends, I became more outgoing and I also became more active in sports. That was also the time that I received my first cellphone which was not even a smartphone. I became active on social media since that was our means of communicating for projects and homework. Being active in school activities became harder because of the pressure in our school. Academics was always the priority. During the latter years of High School, I was given a smartphone. This was the only piece of technology that I really used. I had a game boy and PSP before, but I seldom use them.

College started and technology was already advanced. Fortunately, I was able to keep up and learn the basics from several equipment. Honestly, I was also one of the many people who were always using their phone anytime and anywhere. I already had my own laptop, but I only used it for school work. Sadly, I had no TV during college since I was living in a dormitory here in Manila. That is why I would always get excited when I was going home during the weekend because I was able to watch again. As time passed, I used my laptop to watch several shows and movies since I learned how to download some of them and asked copies from my classmates. This made me really happy because somehow, I was still able to watch from time to time.

Growing up as a kid, technology wasn’t really amusing and important to me. As long as there was television, I was fine. It was when I grew up that technology became useful to me and became a part of my life. Up until now, the only technology that I carry with me is my phone. My laptop was only used for school and watching. At home I only used the television. I think that this was okay because growing up, I got to experience the best of both worlds. I wasn’t a stay at home kid, I became outgoing, and I wasn’t stuck in my room playing video games all day. I am very thankful that I grew up this way. Seeing kids today made me realize that I grew up just fine. Children these days would get so hooked on technology and forget what being a kid really feels like. Technology can become both good and bad in my opinion. It is up to us on how we control ourselves and how often we use them. I think that we should keep it balanced because nothing beats interacting with people who are in front of you than on a wide screen.

To end my entry, I leave you with this picture of Hawkeye/Robin hood when he was still a kid. A kid who appreciated life inside and outside of the house. Sadly, this cute kid grew up, but I heard that he still watches a lot of shows and cartoons on television.

How Technology develop me as a social being

Dela Cruz, Alvin John B.
College of Nursing
3NUR-1

Technology for me has a remarkable and unforgettable experience since I was young. Internet, television and cellular phones were already made and evolved. Gadgets like Playstation 1, 2 and Portable and Xbox 360 were created. As early as the age of 2, I already played my PS1 and the game that I’ve played was Jurassic Park together with my elder brother. At the age of 3, I watched TV for the first time and the shows that I’ve watched that time were Sesame Street, Bananas and Pajamas, Teletubbies and Baby Looney Tunes. When at the time when I was in grade 1, I played PS2 together with my cousins and my siblings. The games that we have played are Tekken 5, WWE, and NBA. I also learned to use computer for the first time through the help of Typing Tutor and by using internet. When I entered in grade 4, I played my favorite games wherever I go since I have a PSP(Playstation Portable). It is unique since it is rechargeable and it has a Bluetooth in which we could connect with others playing also with PSP. Most of the time, I play GTA on it to finish missions that will need to accomplish. I finally used Facebook when I was in grade 5 and in this, I could chat with my father in overseas not like before, we spent time writing letters and he will receive our letters after a month as same as my families, and my friends. I would also post of what I want to say and express feelings, add friends that I really know, and playing games that was really awesome and cool. When I entered in highschool, I could dance and play sports by using Xbox 360 through the use of kinect camera. With this, I would also burn calories because of sweat that I produced.

Of all the technologies that I’ve said, there are lessons in life that I have learned like being sociable to others, the essence of teamwork in the gameplan techniques, learned to accept defeat by my friends and when I failed the mission. I also learned to stand up again and make vengeance to improve and successfully complete the mission. I learned to carefully say and post in social media so that others would not hurt. Lastly, I learned to control using our technology that we have and avoid doing these excessively which would lead to harm in our health and our personality.

What technology has done to this generation

Sua, Ralph Matthew Q.
College of Nursing
3NUR-1

I believe that technology has influenced the way I live right now. Just the fact that I have to use a computer to write this entry is already a statement in itself of technology's influence in my life. People say that life with technology leads to a simpler and more convenient life, but I would like to say otherwise. Just living in the city is already stressful enough. I think that without all this technology, we would have simpler lives. I just believe that all this technology gives us more stresses and unnecessary things to think about. Because the society adapts to technology, as a college student, it is a must to own a laptop and a mobile phone because it is needed to look for updates, take pictures, do projects, papers, etc. In this society, you can't live with a laptop or a phone because life (the society) will make it hard for you to conform to the requirements it has imposed through technology.

I would just like to imagine if I had not grown up watching TV and playing Gameboy . Would I be a more social and emotionally intelligent person now? The answer I think is yes Because I believe that technology gives us a virtual reality, wherein we try to become a better version of ourselves, only it's not really us. It's virtual. And I would like to emphasize that this virtual image accompanied by the hassles of technology like having wifi, charging the computer or phone etc... These give us stress both physically, psychologically and socially. Which the generations ahead of us did not need to experience.
In addition, it's as if we always have noise in our lives due to technology and time to reflect, be quiet and still has seemingly been taken out of the picture in our generation.

Yes, I grew up with technology. It is is inevitable that it has changed my life. I grew up watching TV and playing gameboy, had my first phone when I was 10 years old. I was influenced by social norms to have a social media account, and now it can't be helped that I need to use technology because it is the means to socially survive in this generation.

Attached below is a picture of what I think technology has done to affect us. Like in the picture, the real people are already right in front of each other, but why do they need to look at their phones? It's because of this virtual reality that technology has formed. Although I believe that technology has benefited us, it has done more harm than good because of our human nature. We have used the "neutral" technology to feed our human natures and desires, and using it instead for the benefit of mankind, I believe that it is more susceptible to humanity's weaknesses. Thus, I hope that in the future, we as human beings may use technology for the good, not the bad.

Inevitable Progress of Technology

Austine James Z. Sta. Maria
Faculty of Pharmacy
4B-Biochemistry

The only reason I had a cellphone back then was when I needed to text my mom in case of emergencies. It was a Blackberry phone with a QWERTY keyboard and it lasted days without needing a charge. It also kept me entertained with games while I waited. Now I have a Samsung smartphone that is where everything is that can be accessed at anytime. It is my form of chatting with friends, watching YouTube videos, storage for everything related to school, reminders, schedules, and just like a decade ago kept me entertained with games while I waited.

That Blackberry phone was with me until I reached first year high school when my new phone would me a blue Nokia phone (still with a QWERTY keyboard) and it generally served the same purpose until my dad bought me an iPod touch. Essentially, it is a phone without a place to insert the sim card so I still needed to carry my blue Nokia around. We also had a family computer that would be used mostly by my dad for his work and seldom by me to play games. Although I was a reserved kid growing up, it was when I made a social media accounts that led me to become more outgoing with other kids in my class. We would play after school and when we get home we would log on to our Facebook accounts to play games. At weekends, we would be alternate in inviting each other to our houses to hang out and play on consoles we got for Christmas like Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2.

It is difficult to break away from human's natal longing of curiosity. From the discovery of fire of cavemen up to the first photograph of the blackhole. It is just like the blackhole that almost nothing can escape from our natural desire to know and learn. It is what led us to where we are now. With just a few right clicks on a piece metal and glass, we are able to order pizza to our doorstep without getting up from the couch.

We have technology in our pockets, we can communicate with anyone, we can be entertained with games and films, we can get work done from home, we can read books, and we can be updated about anything in the fastest time. Particularly, technology is helpful because about 20 years ago most students in college and higher schools, like me, would need books in order to learn about whatever they are taking and now those kilograms of books and early onset of backpain can be saved in a tablet that can be lighter than one of these books.

There are also apps in a tablet that can make it serve as your notebook as well. Hence, this device can have all your books and notebooks for the different subjects organized under one screen. This allows for easier organization, faster searching, portability, and increased productivity.

But with the mentioned advantages there comes disadvantages. Procrastination can be just as easily achievable as productivity because of the availability of games, videos, and other forms of entertainment online. This can lead to lesser work done than what was intended.

Today, I would be very disorderly as a student without my phone. It serves as a storage for everything like my eBooks for my subjects; scanned copies of my notes; reminders and schedules for school organizations, chores at home, and academics; photos of experimental procedures; and most importantly, storage for memes. My laptop would have my video games and movies. I am planning to get a tablet which puts me in the direction of going completely paperless when I get to med school because I would want to save myself from all the backpain that comes with having to carry 10 kilograms worth of books. Overall, these devices have made me a less shy person and helped me form relationships I haven't thought about. Online games helped me connect with people from around the world and relax when I want to. My phone reminds me of everything, keeps my notes for studying, and keeps memes for when I need a laugh.

Technology has changed me as a person. It opened new opportunities for me that I didn't know before. It helped me become more productive and less bad at time management. The distance with my family and friends in the province is also not an issue with today's means of communication. I would know when one of my friends would be in Manila so we could hang out. I would also be informed of updates of my dad who is working overseas and my mom and sisters who are staying in the province. Technology helped me learn more about people and how they communicate with each other. It helped me adjust to the culture in Manila and the difficulty of college life.

Technology - a friend or foe?

Ramos, Aubrey I.
4C - Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

I grew up in Banaue, Ifugao, living a simple yet beautiful life. Aside from having a spectacular view of the rice terraces, I grew up surrounded by family and a lot of friends, which makes my childhood very happy. I remember playing tagu-taguan, lutu-lutuan and patintero with my friends and cousins. We loved exploring outdoors as well. I also remember how I hated napping after school, but me and my friends looked forward to afternoon snacks my mother gave us after naps or during play. These are moments I consider priceless.

When I was in high school, however, I felt like I was in a different world. It was difficult to communicate to my peers and express myself because I was so shy, and I opted to stay at home most of the time. That was the time when I had my own cellphone. Texting was ‘in’ during that time and I can say that it created an avenue for me to talk to my friends and express my feelings and opinions easier than talking to people in person.

My father is an overseas Filipino worker. This makes the use of technology important for our family to be able to communicate. Back then, I remember that we only get to talk to our father during special occasions because phone calls were too expensive. However, as technology developed, there were more options and easier ways to communicate to people even to the ones abroad. Having the internet provides access to different messaging applications that would provide lower cost calls and texts.

I was able to witness how technology developed and I can say it was beneficial especially to students like me. There is easier access to information online. In addition to this, we get information for free anytime we needed it. Doing research was easier because of open access journals and articles as well. Another example of the use of technology for educational purposes include UST Blackboard where professors and instructors could communicate for lessons and activities.

Aside from these, I also spend most of my time using my phone and other gadgets for entertainment. I love reading and I could get copies of books online with cheaper prices and sometimes even for free. I also stream movies and TV series online as well. In addition, I use it for social media like Facebook and Instagram.

It is evident how technology played an important part to my life most especially for communication and educational purposes. However, the downside is that I have less interaction with the people around me. I treat my phone as an essential part of whatever I do, and I always feel like I must have it with me. I realize how much I spend my time on social media giving more attention to how people react to what I share online, and I tend to forget that it is much better to communicate with my family and friends in person. This way I get to bond with them and have priceless moments – just like how I remember the days when I was a kid.

This was how technology affected and shaped me as a social being. And if you ask me if I consider it as a friend or foe, I say both. It provides easier way to live life, which is good. However, let us not be slaves to the entertainment it gives us. It lies within us to control our use of technology and how it would affect us, the people around us, and our lives.

Agadulin, Jones Hero C.
4B - Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

"Just google it." Said everyone when they don't know the answer to a question or if they have queries about a certain topic. The advent of technology ushered a new era where people can do almost anything conveniently. It made the lives of many easy and convenient. When you are hungry, you can order food with just one tap. If you don't understand the lesson, you can watch tutorials in youtube. It feels like everything is in the palm of your hands.

I lived most of my childhood in the province. I experienced playing in the dirt and throwing dirt with my playmates, its like a snowball fight but with dirt. We built huts using dead leaves and wood sticks we find in the forest then we rest there after playing. We also do cockfighting because we raised chickens in the past. During sunsets, we usually ride our bikes to go to the dike and watch the sun disappear. I was really in touch and connected with nature when I was young. The only thing I knew about technology was TV, the computer in our house and the games I play in the cellphones of my parents.

That changed when we moved into the city. I was a bit uncomfortable for the first weeks because i wasn't used to the noise and all the ruckus. I started grade school and i learned more about the internet. The first ever social media account I made was facebook. Me and my classmates would help each other out in farmville, cityville, nightclub city, and pet society. The games we played in facebook played a role in our bond as friends. I started to spend more and more time in facebook rather than interacting with my family and friends.

College started and I realized how convenient it was for our generation to do home works and laboratory report because all the things we needed to know are just a search away. As a student, technology has a big hand in helping me fulfill my duties as a student. But is some way, technology has a negative impact on the student's work ethics because we became complacent because we can just search it and cram our school works, we have been to dependent in my opinion. As a social being, technology helped me reach out to more people and expand my connections. I made new friends due to social media. It helped me communicate with people that are far away from me. But if you look at the negative effects of social media, you can see that individuals live in a hyper-realistic digital world, everyone shares everything every time. People now chooses to take a photo of their food instead of eating it while it is still hot and scroll and tap on their phones instead of talking with their family and friends. We choose to take a pic of the sunset and upload it into out Instagram stories instead of enjoying the view with our loved ones. A person is so friendly in the internet but doesn't know how to interact in person. It seems that people overshare whats happening in their lives nowadays that privacy and the authenticity of the moment are nowhere to be seen. It is a bit saddening that it is a fact that people do things just for show. We have been so caught up in the idea that people likes our photo and other stuffs we post in order for us to feel validated. Technology is great, it has done wonders for humanity. But as all things, it comes with a price. In our case as social beings, our social skills seems to regress as technology advances.

NAGUIT, PAOLO LORENZO V.
4C - BIOCHEMISTRY
FACULTY OF PHARMACY

I realize that over the years technology has influenced the way I do things positively in terms of delivering fast and accurate results which is a big improvement compared to doing it manually. With technology, I learned to do things at a different level and it allowed me to perform multiple tasks just by tinkering into my desktop and keyboard, hence I believe that with technology, my output has become a lot better while using my time and effort efficiently.

Technology is now interwoven in my life. It is now indispensable for me to use computers and the Internet to complete schoolwork, projects, and to conduct research. It helps to accelerate the learning process for students like myself because it creates a more efficient learning environment. For example I can do research much faster than I could if I were to go into the library and search for references. Without the Internet I wouldn’t be able to view my thesis mates posts until our next group meeting. Moreover, technology is also an important part of my life for reasons other than just academics bcause I also listen to music through spotify and Youtube. Technology is also important to me for enjoyment purposes such as playing computer games. Technology is also important to me for communication purposes. With smart phones and built in video cameras on computers my family and friends are just a click away. When it comes to the way we communicate, modern technology has had an impressive influence. Modern technology has made it possible for the discovery of many multi-functional devices like the smartwatch and the smartphone. With all of these revolutions, technology has also made our lives easier, faster, better… and more fun. For all these reasons technology is invaluable to me and without it my life would definitely be very different.

Technology is something that I really think is important to our society and I have been lucky enough to have had good resources to allow me to have the opportunity to learn how to be literate in technology.

As illustrated in the figure, Technology evolves, as as it evolves there more we find more convenient ways to get many things done in a day without too much hassle and this is one of the great benefits of having new technology.

Asirit, Marielle Aliza J.
3Nursing-1
College of Nursing

How I remember those days, when my mom would scold me for playing too much under the sun, not being able to take a bath with the smell of a kid's sweat - some would say like a vinegar. Playing those "texts" made out of paper cut into small pieces and then finding yourself a "pamato" so when you play with your group of friends you have more chances of winning. I remember the times my cousins and I would play hide and seek where we'd usually hide on our neighbour's house. Swinging the old jeepney rubber wheel attached to the tall acacia tree. Being able to do caroling during christmas season. I remember those days, I was very active and participative of games, of fun activities most children aren't familiar nowadays.

Technology has gotten kids way far especially in communication. Yes, I would agree it became faster, but I would also add that from its invention, it also gave birth to communication barriers, where one would feel the belongingness and love that I felt when I was a kid - you can't explain it thoroughly, but you could feel it.

Although technology is flawed just as we human beings are, it brought us a better world, bringing spectacular awes to many. From the movie houses, from the computers and laptops, from expanding knowledge through research, for the appliances that made living easier and more convenient and many more things associated with it. Yet, we forget to live our life, what I meant was, people became more attached with their gadgets rather than spending more time with their family, in which I myself is guilty of.

Technology for me did contribute greatly to mother earth's destruction in which I fear for the coming future where the children won't be able to have enough resources to live or a beautiful scenery to enjoy. Technology has been abused by many. From those sexually-related content, to cyberbullying, and to gain power for personal use. It is in this time, the 20th century that we have forgotten why tech is done, how it is suppose to help us, how it's suppose to be taken care of.

The ambivalent feeling is present in my heart, how I wish that we become more responsible with its use so we could live a balanced life, making our limited time more meaningful and not only scrolling through the pages of our social media accounts or finding memes. Technology greatly changed everything both in happy and sad ways, and as much as possible let's not forget that our culture should be brought alongside it as we develop more things about technology.

So if your were born like me in the 90's, I attached here a video I can really relate to. Hope you enjoyed watching!

Reyes, Justine Eunice M.
4B-Biochemistry

I have seen how technology evolved throughout my entire life. It has completely changed virtually every aspect of our society over the past few decades, from the way we work to the way we socialize and everything in between. As a child, I really enjoy playing on the streets with other kids even though how high up the sun is in the sky. Today, I really feel sad for children who didn’t get to experience the kind of childhood that we had before since their toys are much more advanced than the Chinese garters, marbles, and jackstones that we used to play with. Nowadays, gadgets encourage me to be sedentary from the time that I get home from school, as opposed to going outside to socialize with some people, since I always have the thought that I can talk to whomever and whenever just by a click from a phone.

Online shopping has been one of the craze in the internet these days, since one can simply access online stores from a computer/phone. I really enjoy online shopping because of its convenience and since I can order products from around the world. I actually consider this as a guilty pleasure because I can say that I have come to the point that a day cannot pass by without me browsing the sales on different online shops. Worse comes to worst, it takes me for more than an hour just scrolling the sales and I buy things that are not really that necessary. The problem with online shopping is that we can’t check the goods physically before purchase that is why sometimes a buyer-seller argument takes place especially because the product was not as good as to what was said by the seller. This could not have been the case if instead of shopping online, I chose to buy the product and meet the seller herself, thus forming a buyer-seller bond as we mingle with each other. Besides that, the time to time notifications from the apps have also affected my attention span and my sleep cycle and the saddest part is that I realized that it actually keeps me busy than productive.

Even though I have cited how technology negatively affects my life, it was actually invented and developed to make the best of our lives. Technology has helped me to grow and to learn. In fact, through the use of technology, I have learned more than I ever did while at school, since it serves as a medium where I can search for related resources that could help me to better comprehend a topic. It has also enabled me to get to another part of the world and live away from my family and friends yet it has allowed me to be in real time contact with them. However, even if it connects me from other people from faraway places, nothing will beat a personal interaction. In every interaction we have, our emotions give us a depth of feeling and clarity and this is what sets us apart from technology which is an overwhelming advantage. In a world of increasing automation, connected devices, chatbots, and virtual reality, our raw human emotion gives us the ability to make choices and decisions that are personalized which can never be captured by and conveyed through technology.

We always have a choice as to how we use technology and how we embrace it. Our interpersonal relationships will always be stronger and deeper than our relationship with technology, thus we must always choose the ways on how to enhance our relationships with others, rather than erode them.

Arcilla, Edward Ashley T.
4C-BC
Faculty of Pharmacy

We do things to bring ourselves to a better position. We do things to help others. We do things to enjoy life. Technology has made these things easier for each one of us.

Technology became an important part of my life growing up when we migrated to Singapore back in the year 2010. The long distance between me and my grandmother to whom I am very close with was not easy. But the use of technology has made it somehow easier. Calls could be made thousands of miles away, even though at first it would only last for a few minutes since the cost for such call wasn’t cheap. Later on the use of Facebook has made things easier since chats could easily be done with a few clicks. The technology in video calls were also a life saver for not only you could hear your loved ones but also see them. This made the distance smaller, emotionally.

Being in another country was not easy. However, the use of technology made me at ease. Directions, locations, and even translations are much easier thanks to the advancement in technology. Directions need not be asked to another person, Google could do that. Looking for new food to try? Bunch of reviews online could give different perspective and choices on food places.

Nowadays, technology has helped me in learning more about other things that may interest me. Especially in the field of biochemistry, technology plays a big part in researching new information that could be beneficial when understanding a new topic. Research papers could be easily accessed through the use of technology. One could even connect to scientists across the globe vie email.

Technology may be said to take away time from reality, yet for me, this brings me closer to reality since not only do I know of the things that are close to me but even other events occurring around the world. The power of technology must be exploited in a way that people could benefit from it. Of course, control and management within one’s self must still be done because anything that is too much is generally harmful.

Therefore, I can say that technology has made my life way easier than I think how it would be without technology. Technology is something that I will always be grateful for as it has shaped me to a better person.

A glimpse of the past and a gaze of the present

Rey, Nikki Jenalyn Joy R.

4C-Biochemistry

Faculty of Pharmacy

Because of technological advances, our world has evolved so much which in a sense that the present generation is so much different as compared to the past generations. For me, technology serves its purpose when it is used in a proper way since its primary goal is to solve problems to alleviate our conditions. It has benefited a lot of people including me for instance.

Way back when I am in grade school, technology for me is just something that is used for communication, transportation, and entertainment. We used to have television for my entertainment since I do not have a cellphone or laptop until I moved here in Manila for my secondary education. Because of that, I can say that I have more time with my parents since, after their work, we used to gather in our living room after we had our dinner then watch our favorite TV series and talk on how our day was. But now, I can say that it is not what it used to be since all of us have our own gadgets like cellphone, tablet, and laptop. We tend to focus more on our gadgets and do surfing on Facebook, watching videos on Youtube, or chatting with other people through Messenger. From there, I can say that technology helped me connect with the people away from me but unfortunately, disconnect me to the people who surround me. And I feel guilty about that. Moreover, I can say that as compared to those kids nowadays, I was able to enjoy my childhood. Because back then we used to play different Filipino games like patintero, taguan, tumbang preso, piko and many more. That time, it was not just a play but more importantly, I was able to find friends and socialize with them. It helped me to meet different kids and develop my qualities like patience and sportsmanship. Sadly, kids nowadays spend more time using their gadgets than go out and play. Using their tablet, kids can dress Barbie in different fashionable clothes and if those clothes are lock, they can pay for it and download afterward. But before, what I only have is a paper doll. Thus, as a kid without so much technology around me, it helped me enjoy my life to the fullest, develop my qualities and know more myself as a person.

As I move here in Manila, that is the time that I realized how amazing technology is. When given homework, with just my laptop and the Internet, I can be able to find the answer. Also, I can see my friends and classmates enjoying their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many more. But for me, I am contented with only Facebook (up until to this day) and a lot of people keep on asking me why only Facebook? How can we know what’s up with you? And one of the answers I gave to a friend of mine is, “Ask me as simple as that.” In my own perspective, we do not need any social media to know what is happening to a person. For me, having only Facebook and no Instagram and Twitter, motivates me to go out with my friends to catch up with them if given the luxury of time. This is because what my friends are posting may sometimes the opposite of what’s the reality.

Overall, I realized how can technology make our lives a lot easier by making everything so convenient. I admit that I have become so much dependent on technology since of course who wants to take the curved roads when in fact you can have the straight one. Technology has immensely affected the lives of the people, but for me, I have the control as to what extent I want these technological advances affect me in any way possible.

The Rise of Technology

Gandola, Kherson P.
4C-Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

When I was a child, I was raised to a place where technology is not the foundation of the interaction of people. Every neighbor knew each other and everyone is a friend. There’s no barrier present that prevents the face to face communication of one another. I can still remember the days when I was playing on the streets with my friends from our community. Expensive toys and gadgets don’t make me happy. The only thing I always wanted that time is to play with my friends. We don’t use toys and gadgets in playing and what we often do was to run around the streets, hide and sick, patintero, climb a tree and intentionally get chase by dogs. This was our daily routine during those days and we just go home if it’s already lunch or night time. Our parents always got mad at us because when we go home, we were often sweating and dirty.

However, as time passes by, everything started to change specially during our high school stage. All of us were enrolled to different schools which lessened our playing time. Technology started to play a role in our everyday routine. Some of us obtained a phones and computers and since we’re new in using gadgets, we were amazed of what they can do. Some of us preferred to just watch movies or videos online and play computer games instead of going out on the streets. The passion of playing outdoor was little by little faded. Through social media, we just often communicate online instead of meeting face to face. The friendship we built was still there and I know it will never be broken but the bonding we used to have somehow decreased because of advancement in technology.

Indeed, technologies contributes a lot in our daily life. It helps us communicate with the people far from us. However, the problem is that the people who are just beside or near us are being forgotten. The bonding that we must have with the people near us is fading. For me, the friends that I have during my childhood stages are the best friends among all the friends I have because we have strong foundation. The friendship was made without the presence of technologies. It just proves that if we just give enough time to the people around us rather than to technologies, the relationship would be strong. However, it’s just that technologies come in the way as time goes by. We are still friends but the bonding we used to have is no longer present. For me, my childhood stage is definitely one of the best years in people’s lives.

This is How it is Now

San Luis, Pia Lorraine F.
Faculty of Pharmacy
4C-Biochemistry

Technology are already revolving around us. I apply technology in almost everything I do – to simplify things, learn, express myself and communicate. During my childhood, books, blocks and toys became my friend. My memory of myself at our playroom was still clear since I also rarely go outside our house. I was this type of kid who just watched other kids play outside. To be honest, my sisters and I literally grew up without phones, cable tv, internet connection, and I never had this chance to play Gameboy nor play station. I only hanged out with my three siblings just within the four corners of our house or in our garage. I can still remember playing the lutu-lutuan where we picked plenty of leaves and imagined it as our food, or whenever we see a charcoal, we would draw boxes on the ground and play piko.

Today, I am already a biochemist student and technology became now my partner. During my internship, there were various latest equipment (spray dryer, AAS, GC-MS, dissolution apparatuses and the like) which I tried that made my laboratory tasks easier. Manual works which are very laborious, are being simplified by technology. With just few clicks on the computer, your samples will be automatically analyzed. Moreover, when I was introduced to mobile phones and internet, both of them served as gates to bigger things. Searching on Google and learning on the internet was new to me that time. It is like a one stop shop where you can search for anything and you can do anything. More importantly, it became my number one way of communicating with other people. It lets me connect to certain people like my family and friends even we were far apart.

The rise of internet really changed my way of living. Social media gave a huge impact and build who I am now. Through this, I can somehow express myself. Everything has changed now. The old Pia, who is very shy, rarely go outside and do not really know how to start nor maintain a conversation, is now a grown-up person. I can show people who I really am. When I use Facebook or Twitter in my gadgets, I can freely share posts that sparked my interest – cats, memes, anime for example. Or Instagram if I want my friend now how my day was. People can see part of my personality based on what I share online. In addition, it gave me a chance to talk with my friends through chat and gets us updated with things happening in our lives. However, I would still say that it doesn’t represent me in full. My accounts are public but what I post online is limited and curated. It is not because I don’t intend to show my true self. I do maintain multiple number of accounts that show different parts of myself and converse with different sets of people about different things. I guess, this is how it is now. This is my life.

Dy, Johann Philip C.
4B-Biochemistry

When I was younger, I remember living a simple back when I was still residing in Bicol. My source of joy would be playing with my siblings interactively face-to-face. We would play with our rhinoceros beetles or "uwang" and make them battle each other. Other sources of joy would be simply watching TV, riding bump cars, playing the arcade in the local mall, and playing YuGiOh cards. Internet was a luxury that time and having Wi-Fi was not usual that time.
As time passed, technology advanced even more. Everyone started using Friendster and everyone was creative with designing their profile. Then came Facebook. Facebook was very convenient since you were allowed to chat with your friends which was not available in Friendster. It also had games to play either by yourself or with your peers. Information can be gathered with one click which made learning way easier.
What I noticed with the advancement of technology is that yes, life became very convenient and fast, but people became an "instant" generation in which they always wanted to get things at once. Admittedly, I also grew more isolated being engulfed in my own created world due to technology. I became less interactive with my siblings and would spend hours watching YouTube, monitoring Facebook and the like. Although technology may seem helpful, it is destructive as well. The key to this dilemma is responsible usage. I hope that the gap formed by technology can be sealed since it can also be used as a medium to connect with people far away. Technology should make us advance further as people and not something that would bring us back to the isolated days of mankind.

Satumba, Frincess Jenelle B.
3Nur1
College of Nursing

I was already in 6th grade when I first got my hands on my first-ever computer, and I was already in my 8th grade when I got my first phone as a gift from my mom. These two events of my life seem to be a border between the two versions of me.

Clearly, electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and the likes, are extremely beneficial to our society. Humans evolved to become social animals, and we utilize communication for survival.

I spent most of my childhood running around and playing with my friends outside, getting ourselves messed up. Lives are so simple back then. None of us knew how to use a phone or even operate a computer. Our entertainment and communication greatly depends on face-to-face interaction. Gossips were less, I was a confident kid, and we were all closer. Time was also more significant in my pre-social media technology. I only get hours with them between lunch and dinner, so the next time I talk to them, it would be on the next day. As we all grow older, mobile phones and computers become easy to access. We all stopped going outside, and finally hid ourselves inside, caught up in social media. With all the friends we have on Facebook, which just began to become popular, ironically, we all became alone. I am less confident now because despite the internet, I communicate with my people less, and I spend most of my hours behind these social media applications. I feel more alone. Seeing photos and updates from other people make me question myself. These things did not matter then to me. The things I should not worry about would probably not exist if social media sites or apps were not invented. Gossips spread like a wildfire now. With just one click, people lives can be ruined. I believe that it is not just me that became a little judgmental because it is only the photos and posts that we see the person. But the thing is, people only shows what they want to show, and it is often inevitable to assume worse or better about that person since we only know them through social media. But despite the negativity it brings, I can confirm that I am now greatly dependent on social media apps and mobile phone in general because of the positive benefits they offer. Firstly, I can talk to my family and friends for hours miles apart. So missing someone is not that hard anymore. My dad was a seaman so I utilized these apps to call and chat with him. Secondly, I am more updated to news now. Thirdly, entertainment is broader and has more options now. And lastly, I became more knowledgeable not just in school but also in life because the internet gives almost unlimited information in different possible ways.
It is obvious how the technology affected my life. We have to accept that social media apps are now part of our lives. The only thing we can do is to learn and be responsible from using it.

Geronimo, Allen Dominic F.
4B-Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

An early part of my childhood was playing on the streets of our village with other kids of the same age as I am. We usually play after class and end until dusk because our parents have arrived home and we would have to help prepare for dinner. At times if I do not feel like going out, I stay at home and play with our gaming consoles such as the family computer or PlayStation 1 with my brother. We would last until our parents tell us to stop playing as too much playing games because it distracts us from our studies.

When I was in first grade, I received my first personal handheld game console which was the Gameboy Advance SP. Luckily I received it during the summer as a gift from my parents. With that, most of my summer days were occupied with catching pokémon. During this time, I was allowed to watch television and I became with cartoon from Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. These were one of the best time of my childhood. I enjoyed the time with technology as it makes time pass so quickly.

Every succeeding year, newer gadgets filled our home like the desktop computer in which I played Spiderman 2 and other games on it. A few more years the prepaid internet came and homework transformed into researches which the internet is very much helpful in finding answers. As the broadband internet became popular, social media emerged like Friendster, Facebook, and Twitter. Although these are already present, I was passing my time by texting my friends on the happening of my life and theirs. We talked and texted for hours until our bedtime has arrived.

As I grew surrounded by technology, it made me realize that it is helpful with making our lives easier, especially with communicating with other people. In chats, emoticons which soon evolved to emojis are used to depict the sender's emotion as the written words are difficult to interpret unlike when verbally done. With this, misunderstandings may develop and are better solved when both are physically present and discussions are done. Personally, I would still prefer personal talks as it feels better on my part that I am able to fully understand what the other person means as body movements and facial expression play a role in conveying their message. Furthermore, the internet and social media have been useful in the transmission of information immediately. It allows people to gain knowledge in an instant. Although we must remember that not all information is true and valid. This taught me to analyze, differentiate, and do further research to see if the information is accurate and correct.

In the present time, technology is everywhere and it has changed and shaped our world for the better. Abuses of this technology will never be absent as some people do have bad intentions and take advantage of the capabilities of the present advancements. With this, I do hope to see what is in store for us in the years to come.

I'm GenZ, not a Millennial

ANG, Raven Kristine A.
3NUR-1
College of Nursing

In this day and age where social media is a rampant part of our daily lives, different generations have been coined as different terms to somehow generalize how each differ based on what environment they had grown with and how that how they live in the present. Those belonging Generation Z were identified as the children who had grown up alongside the internet and could recall most of their lives using it. I wouldn't say that I had grown up exactly how they describe those belonging in the Generation Z. Being born in 1998, the internet hadn't been all that great back then and the biggest blessing we had as children, and for parents, was television. Like most children, my childhood was made up of children's books and building blocks shared among children my age. I didn't learn what I know through the internet, but rather through the people who had been there during my early years of childhood. The earliest recollection I have of any sort of apple product was an iPod shuffle and back then, there were no touch screens yet. They were made with only 16 gigabytes at most and songs couldn't be manually selected to play yet, whatever song that would play would be a surprise. I grew up with a Nokia phone attached to a lanyard around my neck, and playing snake while waiting to be fetched from my tutor.

Even when I had been in the latter part of grade school, the coolest phone to have back then wasn't an iPhone yet, but instead, a Blackberry (with BBM, of course). But I had seen the creation of numerous new technological products that allowed for us to freely use things like the internet with such ease. Although the Philippines is quite far behind in advances even until now, we are able to have all these things coming from different parts of the world since that's how our society is now.

It would seem almost impossible to survive in an environment so driven by technology and media. Children nowadays are glued to the screens of their iPads since their parents had given in to giving them one; all for the sake of their convenience. It bothers me that children now would much rather spend their time indoors watching Youtube videos and playing games on their parent's phones are tablets, instead of having actual interactions with other children their age like how I did. When I try to make conversations with my younger cousins, they reply brusquely in order for them to return their full attention back to whatever held it in the screens of their devices. They no longer know of the old games we used to play like ice, ice water or even just patintero. They seem exhausted even at just the mere thought of playing a game that requires being chased around for an indefinite amount of time, with no tangible prize to the name of the winner.

Television is another thing that most children no longer use. When I was younger, my chance to Dora the Explorer in the morning before my bus came was sole reason why I never complained when I was being woken up. But now, children would have no difficulties in watching whatever they want, whenever and wherever they want it. Back then, I had to wait for specific time slots to watch my show and I would be in such a bad mood if I had missed it. I guess it was because of the exact reason that people decided to create platforms such as Netflix and Youtube, wherein you can watch your videos in demand.

But the outcomes that technology has positively brought to society isn't something that can be disregarded. No matter how far back I think about how technology has affected us, the word I always think to describe it is, "convenient". So many aspects of our lives have changed because of how convenient technology has made it for us. Looking for an answer to your question is possible within just a few seconds, with millions of possible answers popping up. I can't say that I wouldn't want for society to be like how it is now since it has affected our lives so greatly. But I do wish that some things were still different and that maybe that can be another thing that technology can change. No matter how much it pains me to admit it, I know that I can no longer survive without technology. I can't be without my phone for more than just a few hours and can't imagine being off any form of technology for more than a couple days. I know that there are people who still live without technology being a constant presence in their lives. But with how I was raised, it's something that I can no longer part with.

Childhood is not from birth to a certain age and at a certain age

A rough estimate.

My dad got into the hobby of selling floppy discs, UV screen protectors, electric transformers, family computers, and was even once a foreman for pc hardware during the technology boom, I assume about 2006. As a girl who previously dropped her interests in playing Barbie dolls, I acclimatised to the wholly array of foreign technology that was made available to me. As every other kid with an inquisitive nature, I questioned how these devices operate and longed to operate them myself before my dad gathered the strength to trust me with anything expensive as these.

How could you not embrace something that has everything? This machine had a calendar, a calculator, a keyboard which is an easy alternative to writing, writing programs that will never make you run out of paper, a search engine that finds words in less than a second, and more features that I can’t even count. Moreover, the constant advancement of technology within a span of a few years is a testament to humanity’s genius, their continuous adaptation to change.

In fact, humanity progressed with technology. It is a double-edged human advancement that shaped the history of our entire world. Technology started from rocks to various mechanisms that resulted in war, peace, and even the betterment of living. Technology is one of the factors that determine the superiority of one country or one society from another.

I embrace technology to a fault. To be precise, I got into science from enjoying various games and online articles about nature, space, and warfare and would not have known Biochemistry if not for it. I learned several languages through the introduction of the cultures of other countries via the internet. I’m aware of the happenings around the world because of the internet. My views and philosophies centre around the utilisation of technology to improve the quality of life.

But hey, if you haven’t guessed it yet, internet isn’t the only technology around.

Technology isn’t just about phones or computers or even our telly. It’s about every advancement we have right now. It’s the what that improved the way we live or even moved civilisation forward. It’s a weapon. Depending on the entity who uses it, it can be used for good or for bad. I’m probably just rambling about, but surely technology being a key factor in who I am made me testify all these stuffs.

''Technology is one of the driving forces behind civilisation.''
- Excerpt from the game, ''Sid Meier's Civilization VI''

It has made my life easier as a student. But before I discovered tablets, e-books, Snapchat, Google documents and the like, I have played different gadgets that were a hit back in 2010 and below. I used to play the Game Boy and PSP. Those gadgets were the best in that time. People in my province would think that you are rich when you have those gadgets. I played old playstations that uses a cartridge and each cartridge contains hundreds of games. Music was always played by a CD player, or through radio, since music can't be streamed that time like SPOTIFY.

Through the years technology has rapidly improve and change educational strategies in teaching us students. As what they call us, the Generation Z, we depend in the internet most of the time. From researching articles to browsing answers for our assignments, everything that we need is in the internet. People post most of the time, regarding what they do in their daily life. Demographics of each person can be known through uploading basic information of the individual or through the posting of pictures. These can be used against us by posers who still identities of innocent people, creating fake accounts and the like. Instead of speaking to the person infront of you, you communicate through phone or use the phone to avoid the awkwardness. THE BATTLE BETWEEN ME AND TECHNOLOGY

This is me now.
This is me now.
Changed. enlightened. energized. ready for challenges of tomorrow
How technology changed me as a social being.
How technology changed me as a social being.

Sofia Cae N. Tumang

3NUR1

Growing up

Growing up, just the thought of these 2 words bring blind fear, for someone like me. Growing and up, are two simple words combined together to form a very complex, crazy and wild experience. Oh how i wish growing up was as simple as sleeping and waking up the next morning, and tadahhhh!! you are this very normal person, but that just isn't how life is, that just isn't how growing up is, and in order to grow up you have to go through some rough patches, some difficult times, some crazily wild situations, because can you truly call yourself a grown up, without that much experience?

Growing up wasn’t easy for me, as well as I’m sure it wasn't easy for you too, as a child I was very weak, sickly, I had to go in and out of the hospital, like it is my second home, I missed out on a lot of things, what I didn’t miss out on, was regular trips to the hospital, regular tests, labs and diagnostics, frequent meetings with doctors, as they try to find out what was wrong with me, I surely didn’t miss out on headaches, stomach aches and vomiting. As I said sickly. although I am very thankful that I got over that phase within one to two years, needless to say they brought upon unfavorable consequence, for example how my parents were so afraid to loose me, they’d keep me in the house all day, left alone with all the toys but no one to play with, as my sister was allowed to go outside and I wasn’t. she went on adventures on her own for the two of us, every night, she’d tell me what happened and I would sleep dreaming of her experience as if it was mine. I guess my parents got so scared that they almost lost me, to the point that they were willing to sacrifice a few of my experience just to keep me safe, and I understood that, because sickness doesn't just affect the ill person, it also affect the people who loves her too. Being a child who is always in the safety of her own home, I experienced the world through technologies, such as television, computers, video games, they were my only companion in that lonely castle, they showed me and made me experience what I couldn’t in real life, so technology is a big part of my life, it has become a substitute for many things in my life, such as friends and experiences. Technology I would say for my part has done more good than bad, it plays a big part of my childhood and even now as adults technology is still a companion, in the form cellphones, laptops and many more. Technology has even taken forms in social medias, and it basically run our lives. Today, almost everyone is holding on to their cellphones as if it is holding their whole life, and it does, somehow. People spend so much time on their phones, its as if their living their whole lives in it, we are so busy trying to live wild and crazy experiences through our phones, that we forget that there is something much more bigger than what we are holding, there far more experience in the real world. I have learned to value real life experiences because as a child I was deprived of it, and I know how much fun these technologies are, they bring you life in small screens, they bring you experience through scrolling, I know it is far more convenient, but trust me real life experiences are far more worth it. Those post wont give you enough satisfaction until you’ve finally lived it. Stop trying to half live things, because growing up is far more crazy and fun outside of these technologies. Technologies have their benefits but only to certain extent, don’t confuse what you see in those small screen and reality, those are too different things and experiences. Go live your life, stop waiting for it to happen, cliché but true, don’t sit around and wait for experiences in that small screen, live and find it!

Deyto, Hazel Kim
3NURSING-1

Technology has transformed the way we do things in our everyday lives, but it has also created problems that did not exist before.
During my childhood, I could remember how I spent most of my time playing outside with my friends on weekends, coming home early after school to catch my favorite shows on television, and using the computer to play pinball or use paint whenever my school works were finished. When I was in high school, it was the time that having a laptop/home computer and internet at home was a ‘must need’. The internet is arguably the most influential invention of modern times. It has drastically changed the way we communicate with others and search for things that we need, whatever it may be. However, despite its benefits, it has created numerous problems.
The main problem associated with the rise of the technology is its effects on human relationships. Although the internet brings people together in the virtual world, it has caused people to become further apart in real life. This can be seen in many instances, such as the dinner table for example. This used to be a place where family and friends would gather and speak together and share ideas and experiences. Nowadays, it is all too common to see people sitting together at a table, with each one on their mobile phone using different social media applications, rather than conversing with each other. The breakdown of real-life communication with people is one of the main problems new technology has brought to society.

To remedy some of the problems that technology has brought us, we need to establish boundaries around how we use it. For example, when gathering with friends and family, it is advised to implement a no-phone policy. This will ensure that our attention is on the people who are actually there, rather than on the virtual world. This is a way to stay connected and be present in moment. In conclusion, technology has changed the world, both for the better and for the worse. Both our professional and personal lives are now technology dependent.

Although it allows us to keep in touch with people who are not near us and made some of the work in our lives easier, it has affected the way we communicate with and relate to those who are near us. One way to tackle this is be present when we are with others and make a conscious choice not to allow these advanced technologies to damage our relationships.

Abuzo, Febby Anne T.

4C-BC

Faculty of Pharmacy

The way I lived my younger years was actually a mixture of traditional and modern touches. This is because I grew up having three siblings who spent their childhood during the 90’s/millennial and this influenced me on how I spent much of my youth.

Reminiscing my childhood now, I can say that I was an outgoing kid who always wanted to play outside with our neighborhood friends. I remember that I always find an excuse to be able to go to the house of my childhood friends by asking them to ask permission from my mom or my grandmother. However, as years go by, modernization is inevitable hence the elevation of technology in my life. I was in kindergarten when I had a grasp of my first owned cellular phone, and it is solely for communication purposes. I grew up having my own yaya and that is one reason why I needed a phone, to contact her. This is the time when I am introduced to the world of technology.

Due to the advancements of technology, a lot of things such as portable gaming gadgets and personal computers entered the scene. My brothers owned PlayStations and my sister had Nintendo Game Boy, them being the good older siblings to me, they willingly taught me how to use them and actually allowed to play with them. Touchscreen smart phones became a trend like an epidemic disease where teenagers, even 10-year-old kids wanted to have. Being part of this generation, I also wanted to go with the bandwagon. As time goes by, I observed that my world revolved around my phone and laptop. I used them both for my personal pleasure and for my studies. Schools now tend to use technology in different ways, hence students like me need to be oriented about technology. Because of media, I became more aware of the things around me especially to the important events and current issues that will affect the general public. Updates, forecasts, news, projects and public announcements became easier and convenient. With technology, I also learned how to speak up my mind and be articulate with my opinion and my stand in the society. Having stated the benefits, surely these upgrades have their cons. Addiction to these gadgets and technology itself locks us to a virtual world. Our actions will be limited and making our lives dull because of loss of physical activity which will surely have a bad effect on our health. We tend to depend on virtual talking, and because technology is worldwide, it is really dangerous because of social medias that treat us like an open book where privacy is least considered. Moderation and guidance are two keywords that will make technology beneficial to our lives.

Usage of technology is never harmful unless we do it excessively. We should never rely our everyday living on gadgets like our lives depend on it. We should never forget that physical activity is important to stay fit and healthy and engaging with other people is a must. Right now, I enjoy the leisure and comfort of technology, but being honest I already experienced the toxicity brought by it. I am now training myself to use my gadgets in moderation because I know this is not the only thing in the world, that making friends and meeting people personally will never be replaced by video chats and online photographs.

Technology: In the Progressing Life of a Social Being

De Guzman, Diego Allan D.
4C-BC
Faculty of Pharmacy

Growing up in the early 20’s when our only possession that can be classified as a technology is our television, radio and some appliances made our life somewhat easy and bearable. I remember the times when I wake up early in the morning just to watch my favorite cartoon and when it’s Friday night, our mother let us use the DVD player to watch Justice League and Tom and Jerry that we borrow from our friend. On Saturdays we must wait for our mother to finish the laundry because she thought that using two appliances at the same time consumes too much electricity so while waiting we go outside and play with our neighborhood friends. On weekdays after we got home from school, if I still have energy left, I will play until sun down and when I get home late, I expecting to be scolded by my mother. When our neighbor has their own computer, my friends and I typically spend the whole afternoon using it. I even sat outside and watch them by the window if they are too crowded inside. We got our own computer with telephone when I was in grade 4. We usually use that for entertainment and rarely for academic purposes. In our family, I’m the one who’s always in the telephone because I gave our number to one of my classmate and later she pretty much calls me every day. Basically that is how my life is back in 2000s.

When I was in grade 6, I remember my teacher using so much visual aid printed in bond paper. It gave me a hard time because I can’t clearly see some of it but now most of the school has projector because it’s easy and not wasteful. Before I had my first cell phone, there was an incident that I go to school even there is a typhoon because there is no announcement of cancellation of classes in the television and in the radio. When I got to school, the classes have already been suspended and apparently our class president disseminates the announcement through message on the phone. This really gave me a hard time.

Technologies surely change me as a social being for the good. Without the use of technology, our life will never be easy. Without technology, this entry may be passed but my professor will sure have a hard time reading it as I have a terrible penmanship. Technology helps us to overcome barriers especially in learning and communication. I can talk and send a message to anyone anytime; I can even do banking on mobile and other things. In the laboratory, instead for manually computing for the right numbers, the computer will calculate is for us.

Technology improves the scientific field especially in medicine. There is 3D printing technology, our genome can be sequence to identify genetic diseases and it even got the humanity to explore the vast universe. Having technology to our side is simply amazing.

(Photo: Katie Bouman (left) with drives of black hole data and Margaret Hamilton (right) with her codes she wrote that helped put a man on the moon.)

Marie Imma Luteria
4C-BC

When I was a child, I remember we have a TV without a remote control, and since I always shift to different channels I was too lazy to get up and change it. Then I thought, I wish I could just say or gesture what channel I want to watch and the TV will show it. Now in 2019, I never imagined that what was once a dream now it's just everywhere -- Smart TV.

Living in the province, I was able to play all the Filipino games with my cousins. I am happy and proud to say that I didn't miss out on these physical games like tagu-taguan, tumbang preso, luksong kalabaw, patintero, etc. almost everyday, we play under the scorching sun. But since then, there are already Nintendo Game Boy and I used to play that as well. Since I was born in late 90's, technological advancement is inevitable. And it has been a part of me, and it has molded me as a person up to this day wherein we are all technology dependent.

Technology has been making our lives easier, comfortable, and convenient. Through microwave, washing machine, air conditioner and etc., I can say that nowadays, these equipment are necessary to every home. And of course, our cellphones to which we are highly dependent to. Honestly, I cannot leave our house without my phone. It’s like a clothing, it is that much necessary to my life because all the things and form of communication is through my phone.

Life has been revolving around posts on social media. This way is how people update their friends or other people what are they currently doing, where they are travelling. People don't usually catch up and have reunions, but instead they chat or do video calls. It is very much convenient. Imagine being able to call your family abroad for free with the aid of wi-fi. I remember how costly it was to make a call abroad in the early 2000's. Now you can talk to people up to how many hours you can. My phone can almost do everything I want it to do for the sake of convenience. Thanks to the engineers and technicians who are continuously innovating for the sake of the society.

Technological advancement shouldn't be harmful, for as long as we know our limit in using it. The world is never going back to the past on the future, where there is much more innovation and advancement. We, humans, should be responsible enough to live in that generation.

Phoebe P. Delos Reyes
3-NURSING1

Technology has changed severely as time went by. My first encounter of what used to be considered as one of the greatest devices ever made was a film camera. I remember my parents bringing it around wherever we go, capturing every moment they could of the memories that would seem to last forever once developed as a photograph. I still consider it to be a great device--the greatest--in the world of technology due to it freezing memories and producing them to last a lifetime when well kept.

Technology back when I was a child used to be used for the simplest things. Television sets and DVDs were used solely for entertainment or for education. Floppy disks contained only the documents placed in them and could only be used once. The Tamagochi, GameBoy, PS1, NintendoDS were used to amuse children and held games that did not require much knowledge (or skill) to enjoy yourself. Mostly, devices were only used with one or two purposes and the world did not solely revolve around technology.

I could say that technology evolved rapidly with how different my generation is compared to the generation today. Children today grow up with smart technology, hence they are exposed not only to games that they are only supposed to be playing, but as well as to the internet wherein some people say it's "scary" to browse in. Children may possibly be exposed to the toxicity the internet brings these days, which may affect them in several ways. The internet brings a lot of good to the world since it promotes knowledge and communication, however with it, one big disadvantage is that an individual thinks and are pressured to be a certain way because of what they come across in the world wide web. I am hoping that in the near future, limitations would be made in this "scary" world, most especially that people are very much absorbed in it and sometimes would rather to be plastered on their screens than to actually live.

I played out on the streets: Chinese garter and badminton to name a few. As I go onto my teenage years, technology has greatly affected me. There were lots of gadgets for games that my grandparents bought me. These gadgets kept me busy playing inside the house for years with my siblings. And as the internet emerges and the trendy social media websites were invented, I have become less socially active. I always stayed at home busy changing my background in Friendster or playing games in Facebook and other online gaming sites which I think made me an introvert that I am today. I had trouble talking to anyone, even small talks. Although given this circumstance, technology has helped me a lot that outweighs what it [partly] made me become. I know now how to intelligently use the internet and other tools.

Lorenzo, Christian Rafael B.
4B Biochemistry

I was a kid who wasn’t into gadgets and gaming consoles as a kid and preferred playing with real toys until I went to grade school. Back then I can say that there was less distraction and that it was more easy to be productive for today we live in a world that is enslaved by technology and people nowadays are becoming too dependent on it. Although technology may have been a very big help to us in so many ways, it has also been a big source of distraction. Distracting us from doing what we need to do and wasting precious time that we could’ve spent with our loved ones. Nowadays sitting at the dinner table without talking is already a normal sight as all of us are tuned-in on our phones, tablets, etc. we forget to communicate and connect with the people around us as we fail to see that we are giving too much attention and time to our social media accounts, applications and games.

How it's like to live with technology

Jacob, Krisha Alexa C.
College of Nursing
3NUR1

Growing up, I didn't really have my dad with me. He has been working abroad ever since I was not yet born. I remember my mom telling me that it was really difficult for her to raise us, their children alone. Communication was really a problem back then especially when technology was not yet at its peak. Long distance relationship was something my mom had to deal with. As for myself, I guess I struggled with my own development because of this set-up. I was longing for a father figure especially when I was in my toddlerhood to adlosecence stage. I guess it was because of technological limitations as to why me and my dad were not really close. We didn't get to see and talk with each other as often as we'd want to because Iphones, facebook, messenger, facetime and other ways to video call were not yet "sikat" and "uso" that time; and because my mom had a tough way to discipline me, I would always look for my dad to sort of "save" me and be on my side. During the stage of exploring things and being playful, I would always look for him to reassure me that my actions and behavior were fine and were just part of childhood. And then schooler to adolescence stage came. I always got jealous of my classmaes and friends for having a complete, or at least a close family. But now that technology took over, it really helped me build a strong connection and relationship with my dad. Communication is a lot better with all these technological advancements. With just one click and wherever we are, we can immediately chat, talk, and see each other. It also allows us to get updates from each other to make sure that we celebrate with every milestone in each other's lives.

Learning is also a lot easier and faster with technology. I can easily communicate and interact with my classmates, groupmates, or even with my teachers. They would use learning platforms like eleap to provide us lectures, notes and discussions. This allows them to facilitate and enhance their students' understanding.

However, technology also has its own share of disadvantages. One of which is being exposed to negativity and criticisms brought about by social media. It continues to influence our mindset and perspective of what beauty is. As a result, we build our own insecurities and try to live up to the society's standards and expectations. One example is going to the gym to be "thin" or fit. I, myself is guilty of this. I hate to admit that one of the reasons why I decided to go to the gym was because I saw a lot of people, incuding celebrities, post their "gym life" on social media. We get easily influenced and persuaded because of wanting to be accepted by others. This in its own sense, is one of the deadliest disadvantage of technology. As cliche as it may sound, I just hope that we learn to use technology to change the world instead of using it to degrade and belittle others.

Just like humans, technology has evolved.

Technology has a great impact in my life. It influenced my life in a good and bad way. I spent hours and hours scrolling through Facebook, liking pictures on Instagram, reading tweets on Twitter and watching stories on Snapchat just to be updated from people’s lives. It became toxic. I compared myself and my life to them. My insecurities started to grow until to the point I don’t know myself anymore. I realized that I used technology in a wrong way. I used Facebook now just to share memes, funny videos and news that is important now in our society, I opened my Instagram to appreciate the power of photography and reading tweets now just too be aware of what is happening to our society and to be open with other people’s opinion and rants.

Technology makes our life so easy. It turns our imagination to reality. Making impossible to possible. It helps you get out of your comfort zone. However, technology makes human forget to enjoy life. People tend to crave the things that will make them happy just for a short period of time and not for the long run.

At the end of the day, technology has a big part of our life. It is everywhere. But we should not let technology eat us alive and be a follower of it. We can still live in a world that can use simple things to survive like building a fire using some woods.
How Technology Shaped Me: Virtually learning Reality

Joshua Franz C. Ferrer
Faculty of Pharmacy
4B-Biochemistry | May 4, 2019

Technology has became a very large part of today's era. I grew in the day and age that cellular phones, computers, internet service providers, etc. were on the rise. Because of this I can truthfully, say that I never had the childhood as other kids were able to enjoy. I never went outside to play with our neighbors, never went outisde to play patintero, tumbang preso, piko, and all the other famous Filipino games. I was confined to the joys that technology had to offer at the time. Waking up at 4AM to play in the computer and spend countless hours trying to strengthen my character in a game, rushing to my favorite arcade game with a token in hand, and borrowing my mother's phone until the battery dies.

For this reason, I grew to become an individual that would rather be in my
own safe space. With the entertainment I had in technology, it became my comfort zone. I opted to stay in that space, while others were having their neighbors as their bestfriends, technology was mine. My confinement to a few clicks and buttons in the virtual setting did not allow me to explore what the real world can offer. I grew to become a reserved individual. Technology shaped me to not enjoy social activities and gatherings would be tiresome for me to do. Interacting with others have been a lot more difficult for me.

This is how I was affected by technology in my crucial years of development and growth. Until now, I tend to have a space far from everyone's reach that would allow me to enjoy the silence and go through things that I have in mind. I learned to rely myself heavily during times of distress as I never really had friends that I would share my thoughts with. Truth be told, however, I do not regret being so immersed in the technology I have been accustomed to right from the start. It allowed me to fast-track the level of maturity that I had because of the things I was exposed to. The concept of bad guys and killings,
a complex economy and how money intoxicates the mind, and that the world is cruel and unfair, all of which and many more I learned and gained the sense of through exposure to technology and all its contents. While others were worried about who's it or how to overcome the third stage of luksong baka, I was concerened about current affairs at the time. This made me the person that I am today, made possible by technology. Ironic as it may seem, the clicks and virtual games that I gone through
taught me about the realities in the world.

Below are some of the games that became my teachers to the world.

Reyes, Mark Christian E.
College of Nursing
3NUR-1RLE 2
Last year was one of the struggles in my life which was very hard to take. I had plans for my life in the future and what I would be doing, but a bump on the road was no bump at all, it was a cemented wall with a locked gate opened in time alone. To make it clear, I had to pause my life and stay in the United States of America for 1 year because of my citizenship and had to apply for my letter of leave of absence and stop nursing for one whole year.

My Mom had to stay in the Philippines because she had to take care of my grandmother who wanted to live here for the rest of her life and since I was very close to her, I had to live life for 1 year without her. It was a real struggle because I had no one to run to during the moments when I was breaking down but with the use of technology, the thousands of miles away from each other was like nothing at all.

Technology is something that helps and enables us to perform our daily living easier and it helps us to do things faster but in my case, technology was something that brought hearts together in contrast to what majority of the people has been claiming, that technology is separating us from social norms but really, you have to understand that it has a lot of uses and instead of focusing on the negative effects of technology, let us focus more on how it can close distance from one end of the world to another, how it can help us do our projects, lessons, work, and basically our life easier and efficiently.

Lastly, to answer the question "who am I now?" I would like to say that I am now someone who is able to express my feelings and emotions because growing up, expressing my affection was quite an unpleasant feeling but now that I understand how it means a lot, I am able to do so and that is thanks to technology for bringing my heart closer to the people I love and cherish.

Fidel Bryan B. Ceñidoza

Faculty of Pharmacy - Dept of Biochemistry

4C - Biochemistry

Technology is said to be the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods, services or accomplishments of objectives. In a simple definition, we can say technology exist for us people. It can make our works easier, give us satisfactions or pleasures, and technology exist in our everyday living. Technology evolves as the generation emerges to the future. New discoveries and inventions exist as we go to the future. For example is the current communication platform that we use, cellphone. It doesn't exist in the past where letters are only use for communication, but now, we can communicate in just one click even we are in the different parts of the world. Talking about technology is broad, but for me to be specific, I love games.

Games have been a part of my life since childhood. Actually, I play games like "taya-tayaan", cards like "Yugi-oh" and also board games with my neighbors and also in school with my schoolmates. I also played "barilan" with them because I love guns heheheh. And it is so fun to play with others that let me brings closer to them. I created friends because of playing with them. It also gives me skills especially on how to be strategic and witty, and games also rules that needed to be obey which I can also apply in the community.

During my puberty stage, gaming technology also has been developed. Computer as a platform for gaming has been discovered, also online gaming. Due to my interest in games, I played different games like "DOTA", "LOL", "CS-GO" and "PUBG". I became fond in playing these games. I also gathered different friends even we just met because of these games. I became socially active due to games where I learn several things in the gaming world that I can also apply in this world.

Me, as a gamer, gaming become a part of my life. It is not just about playing games where people say that we cannot learn anything from it. I can say that they are totally wrong because one aspect that I learn from gaming is the term "DISKARTE" where it boost my ability to think and what to do in a current situation. Now, many millenials play games for a living and actually, they are succeeding because we are already near the future. Also the technology has also been developed where cellphone can also be used as a platform for gaming. But, I'm not saying that we need to make games our only world. Technology, even it is not game, can be a pros or cons on the way we use it. Just use these technology for the right and the betterment of this world. The world is a wonderful place with different resources and it is becoming more and more wonderful because of new technologies being discovered and invented.

This is a picture of me during childhood playing toys and me playing DOTA with a friend, Rudnie.

Technology through my eyes

BALILO, Agape Ruth S.
4B-Biochemistry

Thriving in the 21st century, technology has undoubtedly become a staple in the lives of people. We have constantly reached new heights, with manufacturers and scientists making steadfast efforts to create or discover the “next big thing”. It is inevitable, however, that opposing parties exist to debate the value and influence of technology. Despite the controversy, one cannot deny the impact it has had on everyone, including me.

I grew up as someone who was only allowed to play within the premises of our garage. Sleepovers and visits to my friends’ house seldom happened. Though I was not as liberated as the other children in our neighborhood, I was able to enjoy riding a bike, playing pretend, and running around with my pals. At the time, technology was most influential for me in the form of television. I would usually wake up in the morning excited to watch Make Way for Noddy, Blue’s Clues, Rolie Polie Olie, Looney Tunes, or Bear in the Big Blue House. My passion for music was also encouraged as I practiced singing over cassette tapes and instruments. Back then, technology paved a way for me to develop my hobbies and interests.

When I was in elementary, I normally spent hours playing games using either the computer or my Gameboy. As I became older, I invested more time in watching foreign films and television series. The onset of social networking was evident during my teenage years. I joined Friendster and eventually switched to Facebook. It was exciting as I got to interact with actual people as opposed to programmed characters. YouTube easily became one of my most visited sites as well. I would rummage for music videos, choreographies, celebrity interviews, variety shows, and tutorials. As a generally reserved person, I appreciated technology in a sense that it allowed me to freely express myself, sometimes with anonymity.

I would say that technology has served me well. I am able to do school-related tasks digitally and not have to worry about convenience. I can communicate with my relatives and share my experiences. I can engage in my interests and come to develop a liking in new ones. Certainly, there are numerous benefits to technology, along with disadvantages – the gravity of which depends on the user. Technology was made to improve the lives of people. I personally think the purpose remains. Its ugly side only emerges when we decide to abuse it and allow it to affect us in ways beyond its primary cause.

Instead of studying one on one with my mom. I just watched educational videos on tv thinkkng that this would help me better and would be less hassle and effort on the part of my mom. As time goes by technology has become MY LIFE, not anymore just a part or a tool used. It shaped who I am right now. Nowadays phones are used to communicate, when u dont have it, you can't communicate with others your family, friends and those who are dear to you.If one does not have access to technology they would be deemed as stupid and out of reach and would leave a negative connotation since they are not reachable through anything.

An Era of Innovative Excellence

Bonifacio, Remuel Brian L.

4C - BC

Department of Biochemistry

Faculty of Pharmacy

University of Santo Tomas

A prevailing idea amongst everybody is a world where all those futuristic machineries, innovative

sciences, and extensive information seen in movies are grasped upon our own hands. This future

technology is, without a doubt, one of the greatest image we could’ve ever unfolded and would

make life as easy as pie. Imagine technology doing chores for you, grooming you, and creating

anything you wanted; this mere concept changes not only how we sought to live but also how we

perceive this world.

I came where technology is not that contemporary, living as how people got to live with less or

even no technology. I still remember the experiences me and my brothers have when playing these

silly Filipino games (‘taya-tayaan,’ ‘ice, ice, water,’ ‘langit-lupa,‘ basketball, badminton, and

many others) outside the house. Or those moments when we willingly played impersonation of

other people. Or on occasions where we would actually waste paper by crumpling it and selling it

as ‘meat’ or something one can eat. Those were the times Filipinos haven’t had the luxury of

technology yet; and for me, those were the times I encountered all my scars from playing.

Technology’s role in the society is not about it being bad or good because it’s neither. This is

because of our perception of technology. Yes it made our lives easier; but in another perception,

one can say that it made us more lazy. Similarly, our mobile phones are strikingly the best

invention for this generation; however, it affected their communication with their loved ones. Is

this the fault of technology? Or the ones using these technology? As a ‘millennial’ myself, I would

consider how technology had affected me in numerous ways, both good and bad, and how I cope

to live with its evolution. In a decade of its innovation, technology has lessened my interaction

with the society, and even family. It even made me dependent on it such that I can’t live without

it. However, these past few years I was able to compensate for all of this. I became wary of my

social interaction and a person as a whole. I would even consciously know when to stop using my

phone and control the times in using it. Technology has changed my life, and everybody’s lives,

with ease. With that, it is indeed an innovation of excellence in this generation, but its rapid

progression would have negative effects on people’s interaction to one another, and the society as

a whole.

Sei A. Moriyama
3 NUR 1
College of Nursing

Technology has helped me to travel, to communicate, and to live in comfort. It is like the new way of thinking or doing the normal things differently, better and much faster with less hassle and at a much affordable rate. Technology makes my life more convenient and easy, not only in my personal needs but also helped me in maintaining my health, and I’ve seen how technology saves lives. But unfortunately, Technology needs energy, which leads to pollution and global climate change. Computers and the internet allow for things like much easier identity theft. Technology like video games and TV help make us less healthy. They allow us to lose touch with other people as we stay at home and entertain ourselves electronically.

Experiencing the difficult times when technology was still starting to upgrade, you really need to make an effort in accomplishing your work. Especially when I was still in my elementary and high school days, we rarely use computers in doing our homework, we still need to search for it in the library, and borrow books. Nowadays, including me, prefer to use e-books, because it’s lighter, faster, and convenient whenever I want to read it I can just use it anytime I want. Another example was when there was still no LCD, we used to have a big old version of “LCD”, they use a transparent plastic paper in writing there visual aid and it flashes on the board, I can’t really recall what it was called, but it was really hard to see and understand their lesson whenever they use it. But I hope that with all the advantages that technologies have provided us, it won’t backfire and make our lives in danger.

Rudnie F. Bajalla Jr

Department of Biochemistry

4C-Biochemistry

Living in Samar province in Visayas was quite simple and peaceful. During my childhood days, technology like gadgets and smartphones was not yet trendy in our town. The only way for us children to spend our free time was to watch tv cartoons or play outdoor and indoor games like tumbang preso, “ibo”, patentiro, luksong baka, jackstone and other sports games. I spend all day playing under the sun with my older brother and neighbor friends. And when I’m already tired, that’s the time to watch my favorite cartoon series in television. That was my life cycle when I was a young.

However, this was change when the day my father bought us Gameboy, a gadget where it was famous when I was in grade school. My daily routine was changed and I spend my time playing this gadget throughout the day inside our house. I seldom play outdoor games with my friends. That was the time that I became a bit lazy and less active because all I want to do is to play the Gameboy.

When I entered High school, my parents gave me a smartphone for me to use in school to communicate with my classmates whenever we have our projects or other things that makes me updated on the events all the time. By using this smartphone, my friend list was expanded by meeting new friends in social media like in Facebook and twitter. This new technology was so convenient to use and that it makes communication easier than before.

As I used this technology, I am more aware on what’s happening on social media. It helps me to socialize more. I spend time all day browsing, surfing, livestreaming, scrolling on social media apps. Time by time I starting to forget to spend my time to myself and to my family, which is a bad effect if we use it abusively.

As time flies, technology improves, as technology improves, our way of living makes more convenient and comfortable than before. We have to use it properly and not abusively.

Modern Childhood Ends at Age of 12

Boado, Kathleen Joyce O.
4C - Biochemistry

Technology has been improving at the same time as I was growing up. Surrounded by technology, I have learned that everytime I grew a little taller and a bit bigger, so would the latest laptop. Everytime I'd get a little smarter, so would the latest smartphone. This simply shows that it has been a generation in which a few clicks would eventually lead us to different answers, even places.

I basically grew up on the streets, running as much as I'd like, sometimes even on my bare feet, riding a bike with my friends for a few hours, and playing various traditional games, tumbang preso and patintero to name a few. My days back then would end by this scenario where my mom literally have to hold my hand and drag me only to force me to go home. It was only until I reached grade 5 that I learned there was an artificial world characterized by rapid changes, where kids are born "digital natives". I was literally technology-illiterate before that and when I experienced it, it was at that time when I understood how technology and communication went hand in hand. Technology, basically, became an outlet for communication and a medium to express ourselves. I just woke up one day reaching for my phone and scrolling through my social media accounts. In no time, I've found myself using technologies to engage in community and home events, participate in classroom activities, and interact with others. Avoiding screen time is possible, but only for certain events.

Technology has changed the very experience of childhood, that's for sure. And just like everything else, its effects are complicated, with both pros and cons. I cannot say that it left a negative impact on my development or on how I grew up. The world of social media gave me a relatively independent space, where I could freely be myself and have my "alone time". It has definitely helped me in various ways. Furthermore, I was taught how frequent it is to be used and for what means only. If I'd be saying that it has become a necessity, some people would argue that they can live without it, however, that's not entirely the case these days. We need our laptops, even our smartphones, to get things done. It also has proven its importance in science and research. Thus, for me, with the correct environment and adequate guidance, technology has been beneficial. Moreover, I was glad that I got to know the very experience of childhood, which probably might not be the case for kids these days who got introduced to technology after the age of 3.

A Paradox

Christine Joanne M. Contreras
College of Nursing (3 Nursing-1)

New technology is not good or evil in and of itself. It’s all about how people choose to use it. - David Wong

Technology is able to create a huge impact in the lives of people and society in general. This is a fact that most of us are aware of. Through technology, loved ones and friends from the other side of the planet are able to talk and see those who they miss and love so much. It is able to connect people and help in socialization. Furthermore, as a nurse, I have seen how technology is able to help deliver care to patients and oftentimes, save lives. I have come to see how “code blue” is called out in the ward and the defibrillator was able to grant the patient a second chance in life. I have come to see how dialysis machines are able to improve conditions of patients with kidney failure. Because of technology, I have seen smiles, heard “thank you’s” and felt the touch of individuals who were once hopeless and lifeless inside the hospital. In this sense, technology is “good” and a gift for most of us.

Despite this however, technology is also something which could be considered “evil”. I have seen relationships come and go because of how technology worked in their lives. I have seen technology being used to hack, cause harm and inflict pain to people. I have seen how social media influenced the beliefs of society on what’s “acceptable” and “unacceptable”. I have seen and heard suicide survivor’s sentiments on how they tried to end their life because of hate comments and bullying made possible by technology. So in a sense, most people would view technology as “evil”.

Having seen both sides, I have come to a conclusion similar to that of the quote; technology is neither good nor bad. It is about how we make use of it that matters. Personally, I view technology as convenient and beneficial. It has touched me as I was able to see my late grandfather even if he was on the other side of the world before he passed away. I got to see with my own eyes how he would react when we would show our faces on screen, and despite the regret that I was not able to feel him or even hug him before he passed away; I was thankful that at least I was able to see his smile before he died. I was thankful as I knew he heard me when I told him I love him.

In retrospect, technology is all about how we use it and thus, the responsibility is on our shoulders. We could use technology to spread either hate or love to people, socialize or isolate ourselves with the world and save or kill dreams and passions. Whether we use it for the good or for the bad depends on our conscience and actions making technology a powerful tool to either connect, build and save lives or kill, destroy and ultimately end it.

Today, it is still the same but in just other video game platforms but there is a difference. When I was a child to adolescence, playing alone for long periods of time was fun for me and I prefered it but today, any game becomes boring if I don't have my friends to either play with me or just watch me play and vice versa. In a way technology, became my way to create lasting and meaningful relationships.

Another story, I was so sick of my phone because there was so much things that needed to be done like in school and family. I wanted to rest and I decided to just leave my phone and start doing things that I love to do like watch a movie at the cinemas or just hangout with friends. When I went back to my phone, my parents were angry because I was not answering my phone and I was instructed to keep my phone with me at all times but leaving my phone behind while I do things is a way for me to cope with problems.

In the end, technology is just another way to advnace human life but it can destroy lives as well. It all depends on the user and how he uses it and his response to it as well.

It is defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes , especially in industry. Machinery and equipment are developed through technology. It is also a branch of knowledge dealing with engineering and applied sciences.

Technology came from science and in Science we know that everything changes and evolves. Development of tools made by our ancestors since the age of the dinosaurs. It has evolved through millions of years since man discovered tool that helped them to live an easy life. Many Scientist discovered that man can use electricity to power machines to help men and workers to accomplish their tasks faster. Now the discovery of the internet is the biggest thing yet. It is due to the fact that the internet is almost capable of doing everything from giving/sharing information, to communication, and doing online school related activities. All these things are possible because of technology.

Technology is both a good thing and a bad thing depending on how the user will use its gift. One must be educated on how to use technology. It must be use as a means to do good and to ease life of the human species. Not to induce harm such as weapons development used in wars to annihilate countless of people.

Technology changed me through the years. It has shaped me into the person I am today. All the things that I used in my everyday living is either technology or made by technology. The greatest thing that technology gave me is the use of gadgets and the internet. Because I can do almost everything through a push or a touch on the screen of the gadget I'm holding. I can shop online, play games, study, talk to my friends through technology. However, the downside of all this is that I became addicted to the use of the internet's gift. Technology is very powerful and it must be handled carefully and cautiously. We must utilize it purpose effectively and for the benefit of the masses.

Imbao, Ma. Rio Lauren M.
4C - Department of Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

It is rare to not find technology in the society nowadays, people are carrying their cellphones all the time and the most common type of leisure or entertainment is listening to music and watching soap operas, drama series and movies, and through what means? Technology. Why not right? Very convenient and very fun! Indeed very fun that we forgot the true value of socializing and interacting with other people. Technology has its boons and banes, yes. I know for the fact that it helped me in my path as a student, so let me recall my interactions with technology in the past, did it really changed me as I was growing up?

My family is a very traditional and frugal one, although we have television sets and radios, we rarely use them. We never had a cabled TV, so as a child, my source of entertainment are my dolls and kitchen sets. Although I get very excited when I go to other’s house and watch cartoons there, I think I rarely asked for a cabled TV, I preferred playing with my toys and other kids. When I first went to school, in my elementary days, things have been evolving too fast and the use of cellphones is a common thing that time. I always borrowed my mother’s phone to play ‘Snake’ and ‘Bounce’, I even asked for one, although, my family being frugal, thought giving a kid a cellphone made no sense. Computers have been a thing too that time, having one means you have the access to internet or the web. That time I don’t know how to use it, we have a computer set at home, however my mother didn’t really think of exposing me in this type of technology. My first encounter with the computer is through school, we were taught how to use Paint, Microsoft Office and more educational applications, it was fun, I thought! So I used our computer at home, until it broke down not long after I started using it. My sister, being in high school that time needed the computer for her school works, our computer wasn’t replaced immediately, my mother thought that there are emerging computer shops out there, why not just go there and rent, it would be very convenient to us because we won’t spend much money. So my sister go there, thrice a week, and I go with her. I surf the internet, discovered a lot of things, made Friendster, made Facebook, added some friends, soon I added some relatives – it was fun. I wished we had one so I won’t be renting for just an hour or two. Having no computer also means I have to get out to do homework that required research on the internet. At first, I used encyclopedias on our house, however I discovered that the internet is a great tool for doing homeworks. Later did I know that having no computer at our own home is very beneficial for me, I didn’t get attached to technology that much (that time). I had fun, but I was restricted because of my resources. I still prefer interacting and socializing in person.

In high school, it was rare if you do not have cellphone with a camera, so I forced and begged my mother to buy me one, I just needed to communicate I said. I convinced her and got my first phone! It was the ‘qwerty’ phone with all the letters of the alphabet in the keypad. Even though I as excited to have one, I rarely use it, I made social media accounts but thought it was boring so I don’t use it that much, up until now. However not having the phone nowadays is I think a social suicide, phones can almost do anything! From being a decent camera, a music pod, a mini library for ebooks, and for class notes. Many people can’t live without it, and I think I’m one of them, it even saves you from socially awkward situations. You can take away any other device from me but not my cellphone. Was I technologically dependent now? Yes. I need my laptop for research and doing thesis works, I need my phone for everything. It made my life so much easier, I think technology had greatly made its impact on my life and has more advantages than disadvantages. And I don’t think that it made me unsociable, because as I’ve said I do not use social media that often and I still prefer talking to people in person. Social media for me is just for communicating with people far away from you and not for daily interactions.

Negative or positive?

LUMANOG, MHERAEUL B.
3NUR-1

Growing up in a province, I can say that my introduction with products of technology (aside from appliances) was quite late compared to other people. I was busy playing games with other kids under the sun, however, that did not stop me to love and appreciate the technology.

I was only 5 years old when I first discovered the gameboy. Although I liked it, I still preferred playing outside. But the computer was the real game changer for me. I started to learn using the computer when I was 7 years of age. Then it was only during my 3rd grade in elementary when I came across the internet and the social media, which was the friendster. I can say that I immediately became obsessed with it, spending 4-6 hours a day. Then when facebook came and other forms of social media, my obsession with the internet became worse. Surely, the hours I spent on the net contributed to my personality in the present. I became too dependent with the technology. I often used the social media to express my thoughts or communicate with other people. This, in turn, made my socializing skills in person poor. I always find myself unable to gather or express my thoughts effectively in front of others, so every time I speak in front of many people, I often stutter. And situations like this is embarrassing for me, so most of the time, I would rather not speak at all.

Another thing, I think we can all agree that the technology makes things easier and faster. For example, during my pre-school years, we used to open and read the dictionaries for the definition of words. But now, googling things would hardly even take a minute. Thus, as a result I use the internet most of the time for my homework, which I think made me lazy. I became complacent, and sometimes I put little efforts on things. There were also incidences when I would do my assignment last minute because I know I would be able to finish it just in time because of how fast the internet is. I have developed the habit of cramming.

These are the 2 main negative effects of the technology on me. However, there are also the positive effects. If the technology or the internet is used correctly, it would save a great deal of time. Another thing is that with the technology, communication is easier and cheaper. Me and my family were only one call or one video chat away, which lessens my homesickness. The internet has also lots to offer when it comes to my studies.

Overall, I personally think that the positive effects of the technology outweighs the negative if used accurately, and we should just be responsible and be aware of our limits. Because in the end, it would still depend on us how will the technology will shape us.

Raymundo, Brent Michael G.
3NUR-1

I consider myself lucky because as i grew up, i too saw the growth of technology with my own eyes. My generation basically grew up with technology and its popularity and usage.

As a kid, specifically in my toddler years, technology was already very evident. The early age of technology was watching VHS through the big boxed-shaped tvs. Or having my dad bring out a big video recorder. Not to mention the nokia cellphones that had the game 'Snake' in it. Basically during my toddler years, i appreciated technology for the entertainment it had brought. But i just didnt appreciate it as much as i did in my early to late childhood years...

During this time, my ultimate use of technology was for gaming. Although the tvs got thinner, and the cellphones got smaller, my love for gaming grew even bigger. From the ps1, to the gameboy, to the ps2, then the psp, then the wii, then the ps3 and xbox 360, and now the ps4; just to name a few video game consoles. These consoles were my childhood. Aside from basketball being my favorite past time hobby, it was the video games that kept me indoors if i didnt go out. Aside from the video games, other technologies that brought me entertainment were the TVs and the DVDs.

During this age, i also appreciated technology not just for entertainment, but also as an essential. Technology made my life easier through bring me closer to people. The rise of the use of cellphones and the internet made the world closer than ever. Anyone from anywhere could communicate with each other.

Forward to this stage, adolescence, the technology just kept on rising and developing. Even in school, if before we used to use simple tv's and OHPs, now we use projectors and PPTs that help make our learning easier and more convenient. Technology has made life more comfortable. Just as the people with Teslas, self driving cars.

Technology has also made a big difference in the health care profession. the use of pulse oximeters and Infrared thermometer guns have helped make work easier and more accurate. Technology also helps save people's lives through the use of various gadgets and high tech equipment in surgeries and other therapeutic administrations.

So yes, technology may be bad, but techology has helped us so much in our lives that sometimes we dont even see it. It is everywhere and we must realize the importance of these blessings given by God. we must take care of this bestowed knowledge and focus on the good that it brings to humanity in order to further develop our technologies to make the world a better, more comfortable, and easier place to live in for ourselves and the rest of nature.

Marquez, Mark Christian E.
4C - Biochemistry
Faculty of Pharmacy

Behind my success of being an educated learner is innovative technologies by superb designers. With the use of modern machines and devices, it really shaped the minds of every learners not only academically but globally upright individuals with the help engraved in these technologies. As I grew up, these available technologies helped me in guiding the holistic development to equip me with the needed skills and talents essential for my lifestyle.

Living in this world equipped with several technologies, I think it really helped me being an educated person. However, they say that a man with the much knowledge is a knowledgeable man, not an educated one. The educated man is a manner of lifestyle. He is living with the flow of today’s generation with the use of modern technologies. But, what really defines an educated person? What does someone have to know in order to be considered one? The number of technologies he has? The size of his vocabulary? The number of books he has read?

To be educated in mind while using just enough technologies in a better way is a great advantage in life. Success is not far from those who are educated with these things. Having so much gadgets does not mean you’re empowered. We can be capable of many things not just technologies. And if we are overeducated in using those technologies, life will be complicated and chaotic.

To be honest, technology shaped my life for being a much more educated individual. Being educated helps individual to learn solely social experiences in his life day by day. With the social interactions that I had, it helped me to be educated who considers not only what I think but also what I feel for others. To be one is to function well not only mentally, but also emotionally. In making life decisions, I followed what is morally right. In example, when I use social media to interact with others, I make sure to it not to offend or upset others’ feelings because I believe an individual is educated if he has a good judgment and has the ability to establish, maintain and improve lasting relationships. Knowing how to rapport with others and how to get others to trust and respect them make us educated persons.

If we’re capable of enduring and persevering, then I guess we’re called to be educated. But, we must also have to keep our life in proper balance. Everyone must be in order. Everyone must use technologies in a right manner. Be flexible to it. Be accountable to it. Pursue lifelong learnings with these technologies for it makes us educated which is an essential prerequisite for living our lives into the best and the brightest.

College of Nursing(3-NUR-1)
Demira Laoreno
Before, the influence of technology was no vast. The presence of technology was simply the presence of lightbulbs, television, radio, cars, and telephones. It was convenient but not necessary. Now, technology has a much bigger meaning. We can no longer function without the use of technology. This can be demonstrated in the role of technology in our routine daily lives.

The first thing I hear in the morning are the blasting alarms coming from my smartphone. Then when I open my eyes, I turn on the lights and turn off my air conditioner and air humidifier. The next thing I do is check my smartphone for any missed texts, calls, or notifications from my friends, family, or classmates on various social media applications. When I'm done preparing, I head for school with earphones on to listen to music I have downloaded the night before. At school, to prepare for class I take out my laptop to take notes, read my online textbook, or search the internet for other reference material. During breaks, I like to scroll through social media feeds to explore any events, local, national, and international. In this way, I can keep up with the current news and trends. When I finally go home, I turn on my computer to work on written reports, powerpoints, or any group output on Google Docs. After that, if my parents aren't busy, I try to video call them so I can see how they are doing in California. If I have run out of funds, I ask them to send me money through online banking. Then if necessary, I also pay for some bills online. Sometimes, when I get lazy to go outside to buy food, I get online delivery from different restaurants. Then before I go to bed, I wind down by reading ebooks or watching movies on Netflix or videos on Youtube.
In a nutshell, technology has become essential in major aspects of my life. I really feel it has gone beyond allowing free travel and electricity to becoming a tool for information, communication, expression, exploration, business, and entertainment.

At this point in time, technology has paved its way to make a dilemma between human beings and their actions. The innovation of technology has been at its peek in the 21st century and it has made quite an impact on society and the people revolving in it. For one, the internet allows people from all parts of the world to express their thoughts and ideas that would not otherwise be heard. People today can connect with relatives from miles away and still feel like they are right beside them even with just a single click.

As a nursing students, we were always taught that our practices in the clinical area are all evidence-based and that everything had a rationale. Technology is essential for us to be aware of the recent innovations and practices in healthcare. I believe that technology in nursing is crucial to patient care and improving care giving outcomes, in terms of how optimal and efficient care is being delivered. However, even with the advances in technology, there are still drawbacks especially in terms of communicating effectively. Patient interactions are greatly affected by the advancements because we got so used to writing everything down and expressing what we feel in front of a computer or a phone screen that the thought of communicating face-to-face sometimes scares us. Creating care plans for our patients are what nursing students dread the most, it's become so difficult to come up with on the spot care plans because of how reliant we've become with the internet.

Generally speaking, technology makes our lives easier and it makes such a huge difference with the way we do our jobs. Technology will continue to evolve specially in the medical field. And as more innovations are made, more lives will be saved, and more patients will receive assistance.

Technology as a way of living

by Paula Louise C. Ofalsa - 3NUR1

Back in my childhood, the use of technology was not that evident unlike now where it's heavily used. During those times, I was living in the province, Sorsogon. During the early days of my childhood, I usually spent my free time playing games like luto-lutuan, baril-barilan, sipa, chinese garter, ten twenty and other games. I enjoyed it a lot as I don't usually get to spend all weekends of my childhood playing with friends as my mother was overprotective that time. So, whenever she doesn't allow me to go outside, I usually play with my sister, watch television or play the ps1. Later during my childhood, my mother had a cellphone and I used to sneak and play snake and space impact. Also, my father had a computer that time and I usually play pinball with it and later used it to create a Friendster account where I played games like Farmville and Pet Society and socialize with my classmates and friends. Basically, using technology during my childhood days was mainly for entertainment.

Now that I am an adult, I cannot deny that I am using technology has been a basic need for me and I use it every day to do a lot of other things, not only for entertaining myself. I have been using my computer and mobile phone to wake me up in the morning, do my assignments, study, take notes, listen to music, watch videos, shop for stuff, ask my friends, classmates, family what's up and many other things. In school, we use technology like laptops and projectors to learn. I think that technology has helped me get a lot of things done. But the downside of it is that it serves as a distraction when I overuse it like how I spend all my afternoon on my mobile phone, watching videos rather than doing something productive.

Technology has took a great leap and there have been a lot of advancements in the past years. It has been very useful to us as it makes our lives easier and the need for it in every day life is undeniable. I believe that technology gives us a lot of advantages but we should not abuse it. It is true that everything is good but in moderation.

Photo: my first profile pic on friendster

BONOAN, Angelica Bernice F.
3NURSING-1

As I reflect on the question, many memories flash from the past and I remember all the sleepless nights I spent with my laptop playing my favourite game and browsing through my twitter. I was not allowed to use my gadgets during school days but I would sneak in my mother’s room at night to use her laptop while she is sleeping. Technology allowed me to know the people around me more because of the social media platforms like twitter. Twitter kept me updated regarding on the life and whereabouts of my crush when I was in grade 7 and it made my heart skip a beat every time there is a new update bout him. It enabled me to know him better but unfortunately, technology also broke my heart because it is where I first saw him announcing his girlfriend to the public. He posted a photo of his girlfriend with a caption saying hoe much he loves her and during this time I also started following the life of his girl. Eventually I moved on with this guy because I realized that he really loves the girl because I always see him posting about his girl. Technology also helped me moved on because I would search some inspiring quotes and post in on my twitter account or sometimes I use my iPod to listen to music which really encompasses how I feel. My iPod helped me release all the pain in my heart and it also helped me regain my normal self. As I am typing this short story, I cant help but laugh at myself for the things I did before but I do not regret anything because I know that I will not be my present self if I did not pass through that stage. As you can see many thing happened in my life and social media played a vital role in these scenarios. Many people would say that technology ruined the humanity but if you think about it, it is not technology that ruined our society rather it is us who ruined it. We have to use the technologies around us with carefully and with integrity instead of blaming it for the negative things happening around us, especially in the social media applications of our cellphone, iPad, or laptop. I can say that I can do anything with the help of technologies because it made my life easier and it improved my lifestyle. All things may become harmful to us if we do not handle it with care so all we have to do now is change our perception regarding technology and start using it with integrity to avoid unnecessary problems. I am very thankful for all the inventors of the technology around us because it really helped me a lot in all the aspect of my life.
How Technology Solved My Problem as a Teen

Anne Robles Del Rosario

4B-BC

As someone who really loves going out for “galas” with friends whether it would be at a mall, or someone’s house. I remembered my biggest hindrance of them all: TRANSPORTATION. Since my parents were always busy with work, I did not want to hassle them to drop me off to where I want to go or even ask my yaya to accompany me to commute.

When I was in highschool, I did not know how to take public transportation aside from taxi cabs. However, I was always anxious about my safety whenever I had to take a taxi cab, I would always text the following to my parents immediately upon entering the cab, these were the plate number, and contact number of the taxi franchise. I remembered getting annoyed with waiting for a taxi to pass by and only for the driver to turn me down because he wants me to pay extra than the meter price.

Especially, during first year and second year high school, I always dread half days, and sudden class suspensions because I understood back then that my parents could not easily leave work just to pick me up at school. In addition, my school had a very strict policy on students who leaves the campus without their fetchers alongside with their fetcher’s card. I always had to look for a classmate with a driver who was either willing to adopt me for five hours at their house or to just drop me off right outside the campus pass the security. I remembered wishing that a carpool service would be more accessible than calling a franchise to book a cab hours prior.

Hence, through applications such as GRAB, UBER, and Hype, I am able to reach the destination where I am going to meet my friends without my parents worrying about my safety and location. Since these applications provide us with all the pertinent details such as the basic information about the driver, plate number and model of the car, and the exact fare price.

Through technology that continues to emerge and evolve, they were able to find a solution to a problem I had when I was younger. It amazes how a few years back, these applications did not existed. Whereas, nowadays, I can easily access these applications through a click. Even if I wish that these applications existed when I was in High School, I am still glad that these applications are now available and can easily be access by many. Furthermore, these applications, provides more job opportunities and it guarantees the safety of their clients which is vital.

With just a click of a button, you can access any fact, book a car, buy items in the convenience of your own home, and connect with family and friends of any distance. While technology has its many perks--just like any other thing--it also has its downfalls.

I've come to appreciate restaurants who purposely don't offer wifi and put up signages saying: "No wifi, make friends". It gives me the ability to connect more and establish a better relationship with whoever I am with. Without it, you also realize how beautiful nature is when you take time to detach for awhile. Don't get me wrong. I love where my gadgets are able to take me--but there is nothing better than the reality of what is in front of you.

Was life better without technology?

Paulene Stephanie A. Soriano
4C - Biochemistry

Childhood. Those were the innocent days when we just used to run, play and enjoy every moment without the advanced technologies transforming our world today. Back when I was a kid, I used to play with barbie dolls and other toys, solve jigsaw puzzles, spend time with coloring books and play outside our house with my playmates in our neighborhood. During my elementary years, every recess time, my classmates and I used to play hide and seek, langit lupa, ice ice water, dodgeball, ten twenty, and Chinese garter inside our campus. Also during this time, Gameboy became a trend and I was a happy kid back then when my parents bought me one. A year later, Nintendo DS became a trend, until PSP became a trend, and then came the Nintendo Wii, and with these gadgets, I can say that they brought my life to a new level and made my life more fun and less tiring. Until iPad and iPod became the new trend and brought my life to a new level again and it made life more exciting.

Over the years, technology has changed our lives in different ways. Nothing is comparable to technology when it comes to improving life. It can affect our life both in a positive and negative way. Technology made it easy and less hassle for us to communicate with other people anytime around the world through our mobile phones, internet, computers and different social media compared to just communicating using the telephone or sending written mails. Technology has also changed the ways of education. My parents used to tell me that in the past, they were not able to get knowledge and information easily for their homework and study for their quizzes/exams. Compared now, we can easily look for information online because everything is on Google. Somehow it positively contributes to education; yet, it negatively affects the students because they would greatly depend on the internet rather than reading books and learn by themselves. And I am guilty on this part because I prefer to search everything online rather than looking for answers by reading my books. Technology also makes life easier for me in some other ways like online shopping, food delivery, transportation and it has changed our entertainment as well.

However, I feel like technology has taken most of my time. At home, when I am free, I used to spend most of my time holding my phone and going through my social media accounts rather than spending most of my time talking to my family and have quality time. I also feel like technology greatly affects my mood, emotions and perspectives in life. Whatever I see online may or may not affect me. With this I can say that technology is too powerful that it can affect people’s emotions. Indeed, technology has already revolutionized our world. Unfortunately, we can never turn back the time when technology still has not entered our life. All we can do is to live the statement: “Technology is the king and human is the slave. But if a slave is clever and knowledgeable enough then they can manipulate the king.”

Who I was, am, and will become.

Francesca Victoria S. Antazo

4B-Biochemistry

My mom would always tell me of how much a friendly little girl I was. They would leave me at a playhouse in a mall, and a few minutes later, I’m already playing and laughing with another kid. Making friends was never a problem for me, but as time went by, I grew more introspective rather than the opposite, which is seemingly being required in today’s society. Some would say I grew backwards. Others would probably understand. So what has this got to do with social media and the constant advancement of technology?

Technology is something which would be difficult to say if it is a positive or a negative influence in our lives. Personally, I think it’s positive, but what makes it a negative factor in life would be how people use it. Technology is a tool, made to make people’s lives easier. Social media, which has grown tremendously over the past decade, breeds different kinds of people. Some would grow more outgoing who shares every little thing in their life, and others who value privacy and only share pieces of who they are without giving the whole picture.

Social media allows us to communicate faster and easier with other people. This helps in information transaction without having to meet personally. Files are easily sent and downloaded depending on the size and site being used. Online sites such as Google Slides and Google Docs construct a more productive work space among students who are involved in group work. Today’s educational institutions emphasize the importance of working together, rather than the “should-be” equally important value of being able to work autonomously. Creating such sites allow everyone to contribute their work without having to wait for one to finish then upload the file to be edited by the next student. Editing at the same time, as well as commenting on each other’s work and suggesting pieces of advice, creates a more productive atmosphere without the unnecessary interaction that only distracts and disrupts the flow.

In spite of the endless positive results of the advancement of technology, what makes it negative for some? For example, the smartphone. Smartphones are multi-purpose computing and communication devices that provide easy access for the owner. The negative side effect of smartphones would be the moment you realize, that while you and your family are sitting at the dinner table, all eyes on your own phones instead of engaging conversations with one another. A negative side effect of social media, which is in relation with the phone, is the image of you that you present into the public being twisted and manipulated into something else because of someone else’s opinion of you. You unconsciously change yourself to fit in. The way people use technology is what make it unhealthy. Nothing is made with bad intentions, unless that is really the goal you are looking for. Some would say the nuclear weapons are for the protection and security of the country, while others would say that violence begets violence and that having such weapons would only lead to meaningless war. The way people use technology is the deciding factor if it is good or bad.

Our generation, the z generation which is also referred to as the digital natives, is born into a world enjoying and reaping at the products of technological growth. One of the biggest problems in today’s generation is cyber bullying. Let us make use of technology for something good, something better. Something that is bigger than the latest Hollywood headline or some public figure’s fingernails. Use technology for the advancement of science and in information distribution. Spread awareness by reporting honest news and facts about the world’s state, economic growth, and public statistics. Raise advocacies timely to today’s era and support one another. Only we can change the world that we will have tomorrow.

DANVEL C. LIWAG

Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Biochemistry

4C-BC

It easily makes me nostalgic whenever I see photos of classic toys and games that batang 90’s had. Flashback of countless memories fills my mind and I can’t help it but to reminisce the good ol’ days of my childhood. I remember making my very first saranggola out of broom sticks and used plastics, using my tirador to get a high-hanging Indian mango out of its tree, painting my trumpo with crayons so that it would stand out among my friend’s, counting my teksand pogs by “I-sa! Dala-wa!, Tat-lo! A-pat! Li-ma! A-nim!”,building castles and figures using my mom’s sipit (clothespin) and LEGOs, believing that “kisses” (bead-like shaped thing) get pregnant and multiply when put in water, and racing with other kids using an old tire. I also remember being scolded because of playing outdoors until the evening twilightmay it bepatintero, tumbang preso, luksong-baka, tagu-taguan, agawan base,or langi’t lupa.

Today, technology has paved my way to a new reality. I became too absorbed in using the internet and digital media that it became my habit to check my phone for any notifications first thing in the morning. Nowadays, I usually consume most of my time indoors – binge-watching TV series and viewing movies made available through the internet. The internet has also become my avenue to gain access on millions of digital and online learning materials where I can get limitless information that I needed in carrying-out my home works and research assignments. Since the invention of gadgets like smart phones and computer, day to day communication has been made so much easier which immensely helped me to communicate with my mom in Israel. And with the rise of social media platforms like Friendster, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, I was able to reach out my old friends and made new companionships as well. These digital platforms have also given me the power to share ideas, to advocate the things I stand for, and to be engaged in discussions with other people of different viewpoints and interests and learn from them.

I consider it a privilege to live in this modern era. There is a better level of education, medication, and commerce. Distant places have become closer, connections have become easier and so has life. All courtesy goes to technology. However, it is saddening that the advent of technology has also crippled the mindset, intuition, moral values of people. Technology has catered harassment in the form of cyberbullying, and it is no less toxic than traditional bullying. Personal privacy is also at stake because everyone has the capacity to take photos and video footage on their phones then post it online. Some also assume fake personas for the purposes of scamming, defrauding, or even spreading fake news.

Indeed, technology brings new reality that can change everyone as a social being which I myself has experienced firsthand. Now, it is up to us on how we will balance and handle this new reality.

That is because my brother and I have different interests due to our age gap of 9 years. I'm also unacquainted with our neighbor who is almost the same age as I am.

I remember the time when I came to notice and got jealous of my brother because of the gadgets that he had, and compared those to the toys that I had which are mostly made out of plastic. So when I asked him to lend me one (Sega Mega Drive II), we ended up fighting because he refused to do so. It was then followed by the PlayStation with exciting games like Crash Team Racing and Marvel VS Capcom, in which my mom find it unsuitable for me. My brother then bought me other games like Harvest Moon and Pac-Man. During that time, technology has taught me patience, as I have to wait for my brother to finish playing before I get to do so.

Growing up, I was someone who goes straight home after school, and I wasn't able to hang out with friends. I found happiness and comfort by watching TV shows, playing online games, and scrolling through social medias. But this made me realize that although technology provides excitement, relief and escape from reality, it also isolated me from other people, especially my family. Since connecting with friends became a lot easier, most of the time are spent chatting and playing with them rather than with those who are around me. As days go by, our technology is evolving, and there will be more tasks and responsibilities for us to deal with. Since technology have made it easy for us, hopefully we can avoid overusing them, and be more responsible as it can positively and negatively change our lives.

TECHNOLOGY IS POWER

VILLALUZ, CAKE AUBREY L.
Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Biochemistry
4B BC

Technology is Power, and It Comes in Great Responsibility

Looking back, when things were much simpler – I mean everything’s kind of relatable, made me think “How the hell did we come so far today?”. Seriously, 10 years ago, all I could think of is what kind of slipper should I use to defeat all our opponents in tumbang preso or is my ponytail high enough for it not to get in my way whenever we play Chinese garter? These simple things a 2009 version of me isn’t comparable with the things a 2019 kid would probably think.

Every generation has its own trend and right now, the world is being engulfed by technology. Everything is electronic-based, everything is automatic. Technology gave people the opportunity to make things easier but it doesn’t mean it is simpler. In fact, technology is complicated. As a pre-millennial person, it was easier for me to transition from the “traditional” to modern than my parents because of generation gap. Some things are somehow relatable, some aren’t. As in the case of games. You’ve heard of VR or virtual reality? It is an experience taking place within a computer-generated reality of immersive environments that can be similar or different from the real world. Modern teaching methods make use of VR to promote interactive and multiple engagements between large group of students in a real or imagined world. Though these were only prototypes, not long after for sure it’ll be one of the most promising teaching methods in the generation.

You see, technology gives both positive and negative feedback. As there is good, there will always be bad. Everything has its own counterpart. Technology allows faster distribution of information worldwide. Most of the time, these information weren’t reviewed or filtered because there are tons! And the world wide web receives millions of posts every second. These misleading information could cause global imbalance, and social indifferences. Imagine, if an anonymous person posted some mass life-threatening message in the web, it would definitely cause havoc! Whether it is true or not, the initial response would definitely be chaotic. Technology also has its way of consoling people. As what I’ve said earlier, there are counterparts. Fortunately, through technology, people from around the world are able to communicate form one another. They are able to form connections with people from different parts and find comfort through them since there are people who find virtual friends more “sincere” than people around them.

To sum it all up, technology in my life wasn’t all good and wasn’t all bad, just the right mix. It’s just that people tend to misuse it and that’s when it gets toxic. Technology is power and as what Ben Parker said, “With great power comes great responsibility”. We should be responsible with everything we do, we say, and we think. Only then will our planet be worth living.

How technology changed our world

Nikki Cyrill C. Capistrano
Faculty of Pharmacy
Department of Biochemistry
4B-BC

My memories from childhood revolved around playing outside the house, doing all these physical activities like running, playing games with my friends and cousins. On the other hand, i distinctly see the difference of having an advancement in technology in this era, because whenever i am with my younger sister and other younger cousins, they were always holding their phones and you can barely see them play like any other children in the past.

Seeing now, living with this technology really changed our daily lives. It seems like we can't live without our phone or gadgets, I literally don't know how to survive outside my house without a phone. Phone or gadgets became our best friend, it is the first thing we are looking for early in the morning. It functions as a tool of communication, learning, and even entertainment.

Technology can be used in good or bad things, it also has its advantages and disadvantages in life. Through technology, there are lot of breakthroughs in the field of medicine or science that became very beneficial to the society. It helped us in learning things and make it easier to understand and learn things, but sadly it can also be used by bad persons to do bad things.

I can say that the advancement of technology really helped us in many ways, but this would only be beneficial if it is used in a proper way. So, parents have an important role to make their children understand the limits in using technology. If technology can be used properly, then we can live in a peaceful world with technology.

Christopher Henri P. Yadao
3NUR1 RLE4

Technology has always been part of my life, I always saw technology as a form of communication. Even as little as 9 years old i can remember being interested with the wonders of the internet. Learning what e-mail was or what internet cards were. Initially I though e-mails were just a prerequisite of games so I go online and enjoy. Later on i began to understand that the internet is a way that the world can communicate information with each other. Whether it was to catch up on their old friends, through email then but not social media, business, or to even teach about anything. During high school i was able to really use this technology to expand my search for knowledge. Book were fine but the internet pretty much had everything on there. As of now i use technology to talk to my loved ones since most of them are all abroad while im studying here in the philippines, i guess technology has really helped me with feeling like im still right next to the ones i love and helps me with my studies

Technology. Yes that one word changed a lot of things. When we first hear that word, what first came in to your mind? Facebook? Instagram? Social Media? Cellphones? You’re right. Basically technology has been part of our daily lives and will never escape on us. Me, myself, and I has been shaped by technology in a positive an as well negative effect. Positive by means that i’m able to share my life, be informed of what’s happening, and be close to those who are far away from me. Negative by means i could not leave the house with my phone, sometimes get distracted with my studies, and of course being an addict! Haha but there’s a limit to everything okay!

Nicko Raphael Sia
4B - Biochemistry

TECHNOLOGY AND ME
Salaysay, Angelica Marie S.
4B-BC

Technology is an essential need in everybody’s life. Without technology, many things would not be able to materialize. As for me, technology has made my life more enjoyable and easy. In my life there have many great changes in technology. Many of these changes have affected my life greatly. They have made it both easier and faster to do things.
In the twenty-first century, one of the most important technologies would be the Internet. The Internet is a system, which allows people to communicate globally. I personally use the Internet on a daily basis and find it useful in many ways. Few examples would be, sending and reading emails, instant messaging, online shopping and online gaming. With the Internet, I am able to keep close contact with my family and friends. One of the useful products of technology would be the television. Usually, my family would sit together in the living room to watch television programs together after dinner. During this time, we would occasionally talk about the shows that are being broadcasted. This allows my family to interact with each other more often. Another part of technology in my life would be the mobile technology. With mobile technology, people's lives are made easier as they can contact each other anywhere and anytime they want to. I personally have a mobile phone too and it has become more than a necessity in my life.

Over the years as technology keeps improving, more and more people are using it in their lives. Technology has become a significant matter in all our lives. Though some are addicted to it, others only using it once in a while, but still we all have used it at least once. Thankfully we have technology which makes our lives easier. But is technology really a change for the better?

In my opinion, technology changed our life into a simple and easy situation without question. As technology is becoming more advanced than ever, most of the products are designed to make our life more convenient. Many things in life are centered on trying to make everything more efficient. Technology does a lot to make things in life easier, faster, and more efficient. This is so we can do more things, in a shorter amount of time, expending the least amount of physical and mental energy possible. These developments can be extremely positive. Cooperation between people in different countries was much more difficult when communication was limited to written letters or telegrams. Nowadays, interactions by email, phone or video are almost as good as face-to-face meetings, and many of us benefit from these interactions, either in work or social contexts. On the other hand, the availability of new communication technologies can also have the result of isolating people and discouraging real interaction. In conclusion, technology has certainly revolutionized communication between people, but not all of the outcomes of this revolution have been positive.

Wahab, Kyra Jane N.
4B-BC

I am so glad to be born in this era. Television is in color. The internet doesn't go out when someone answers the telephone. Contacting anyone around the world is as easy as pie. I remember when the phone bill cost so much to call overseas. You see, I used to live in Saudi Arabia. My parents are OFWs. They still are, and now I can contact them whenever I want with just a press of a button.

Growing up in Saudi, other than the occasional "malling" or house parties, my childhood was mostly spent at home. I spent countless hours watching tv, much to my parents' chagrin. I would play my Gameboy (which would later be replaced with PSP) until my parents would nag me to eat or do my homework. God, I remember the classics. Pacman, Tetris, and Super Mario. I remember my mom loving Tetris for a while. Everytime she played, I'd tell her it was my turn and then she didn't anymore. I played so many games. Tekken, Final Fantasy VII, Megaman, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Sonic, and Kirby to name some. I feel so nostalgic typing this. I also had a Wii, which I often played with my siblings. If holidays came, which in our school celebrated both Philippines' and Saudi Arabia's holidays (thank Jesus), my siblings and I would spend all night and day playing up until morning. We only had one laptop for me and my siblings, and we would take turns in playing Counter Strike 1.6. When we had our own, we branched out to more video games and had more time surfing the net. That was my childhood in a nutshell. My parents were never happy about it, but to my defense there was nothing else to do. I look back at those memories with nothing but fondness. I don't regret "wasting my time", as my parents would say, because it wasn't a waste of time. I learned English through the internet, games, and watching tv. My values were shaped through the eyes on the internet, from comments I read, from stories people shared. When I was a kid, I used to be one of those people who blamed sexual harassment on how women dressed. An argument I read in a comment section changed my mind. Many things I didn't know in sex education, I learned in the internet. I learned about the Holocaust and 9/11 because of the internet. I am more open-minded of other people's culture because of the internet. The things that went on and is currently going on in the world, I know, because of the internet. All those hours were not a waste. It made me who I am today, and that's the end of it.

I am thankful for the advancement of technology that gave birth to the internet, a library of history and knowledge and a vehicle for entertainment, as well as the others that came with it. Technology is still endlessly evolving, truly a testament of the progress of human intelligence. Here's to the future.

Kate Marielle K. Pascasio
4B- Biochemistry

I used to distance myself away from phones and computers because since I was young, I was always told that it would be harmful for me to bathe in its radiation and light. I used to hear a lot of negative things about the phones and the internet and social media so I busied myself with other things like reading actual books, writing and drawing on random notebooks, playing with my friends, and talking to anybody that I could talk to.

It wasn’t until high school that I was opened to the beauty that was technology. I realized how much information that I missed out because apparently, with just a click of my fingers, I could search anything that I wanted. It helped me so much with my assignments, projects, and research works. Since I am an audio- visual learner, I could just watch educational and recreational videos on youtube to learn and review for my subjects. It wasn’t only in school works that the technology helped. I would watch movies on the laptop or television and play my favorite games on my hand phone to keep me occupied. Also, I could search for great music and bless my ears with my favorite songs. My friends and family, no matter how far they are, were only just a screen away. Communication and the spread of information became easier for everybody. Technology kept me updated. It kept me sane.

It wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. But sadly, it isn’t like that for everyone. Others get swallowed by the negativity posed by the social media sites. Others can’t balance their time and attention which results to less physical communication with people. Others use it as a venue to do such vile things like cyber bullying.

There are always pros and cons on topics like this and I am very lucky that I get enjoy the pros.
