Before SLHS 4802

Before I took rehabilitative audiology I had never really heard of the terms "patient-centered" and "family-centered" care within the field of audiology. To me, all audiology was was hearing aids, cochlear implants, so many graphs, and numbers. Thankfully this class brought to light the other side of audiology, the side where the audiologist is involved in their patient's lives; they're not just a means for selling hearing aided devices. I loved seeing this side of audiology that I haven't seen in any of my other SLHS classes, it made me really excited to learn the many ways audiologists help their patients and I hope I can use some of the knowledge I learned from this class and use it in the future when I'm a speech-language pathologist.

I found it really fascinating when you said "there's an entire class just about batteries" when we went over the battery unit in class this past semester. That comment made me realize how in-depth audiologists have to go to learn and understand the equipment that they're working with. I realize that technology is ever changing in this modern world but it never occurred to me that the people who work with technology have to keep up with all the changes as well, especially audiologists as they will want to know and use the best devices possible and learn about new techniques (telepractice) that come out so that they can give the best care to their patients as they can. As much as I loved learning about all of the different kinds of hearing aids, I really loved learning about the different kinds of intervention strategies used the most.

I feel as though I've learned about some of the most important aspects of audiology through this class because to really help your patient you have to understand the feelings that they're going through, that maybe coming in to see an audiologist wasn't their idea, or they're becoming depressed because they feel left out of conversations constantly. Without this class I would have never seen the social side of audiology, the side that I can understand a lot better than the technological side of it. I feel as though the knowledge that I gained these past couple of months has really prepared me in becoming an SLP in the future.

I liked your organization of before, during, and after 4802. Very clever. Thanks for sharing your perspectives. Best of luck in the future as an SLP.
10/10
